LIBRARY The Elizabethtown Community College Library is no w filled beyond its capacity, the number of volumes totaling approx- imately 16,200. The librarian subscribes to eighty periodicals, and subscriptions are constantly added. In the near future more shelving will be installed to alleviate the overflow of books. Dr. James Owen, the faculty and staff are intent upon helping to build the collection so that it will be adequate to serve the college and the community. Included in the library area are a reading room, stack area with study carrels and an audio-visual room. Newspapers, periodicals, unabridged dictionaries, and the atlantes are in the reading room. The books and bound periodicals are in the stack area. Audio-visual acquisitions include film strip viewer, micro-reader printer and stereo equipment with earphone at- tachments. There are recordings of classical, jazz, and popular musics plus readings in poetry and drama. Some of the students who are employed under the Work Study Program are library assistants. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Both modern technology and traditional scholarships are combined to make the freshman English program one of the most exciting and effective in higher education today. In this ad- vanced-concept course, students meet for profes- sionally prepared and edited audio-tape lectures once each week. Following the tape session, stu- dents meet in small classes for group discussion of the principles of writing covered by each tape. And finally, for individual help, students attend writing laboratory sessions in which tutorial assistance is provided by experienced writing instructors. Un- like freshman English courses in most colleges, which tend to be either “introduction to literature” courses of “English for English majors courses, freshman English at ECC is an “English for every- body course. Such things as poetry, novels, creative writing—the usual “stuff” of English classes—these the interested student can pursue on his own: he won't find them in freshman English at Elizabethtown.
