RECS A РОКТКАП ELIZABETHTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY ELIZABETHTOWN, KENTUCKY 1969 г. por иа и Dr. James Owen, Director Mr. Robert Keen, Assistant Director ADMINISTRATION The Blizabethtown Community College is a part of the University of Kentucky's Community College System. It is governed by the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees. At the local level, an Advisory Board, under the leadership of Chairman Bob Wade, keeps the local college administration and the University of Kentucky informed as to community needs for higher education. The local administration, under the leadership of Dr. Jim Owen, Director, and Mr. Bob Keen, Assistant Director, guides the Elizabethtown Community College in serving this community. The three major functions of the college are to provide college transfer courses for baccalaureate candidates, technical courses for two-year associate degree students, and continuing education opportunities for adults. The Director and Assistant Director are supported by administra- tors in the areas of admissions, curriculum, guidance and counseling, instructional materials, students activities, and continuing education. Mr. Bob Wade, Chairman of the Local Advi- needs with Dr. Owen. sity 3 2eps Dr. Jim Owen expresses his views to the Administrative Cabinet. GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING Students receive advisement from both a guidance counselor and from academic advisers. Students who know their college majors are assigned to academic advisers. Close attention is given to make certain that each student takes the appropriate courses for transfer to the college or university of his choice or for proper completion of an Associate Degree. selor Mrs. Cheryl O’Brian and Mr. Harry Lee discuss entrance requirements with a student. ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITIES Some of the administrative activities are sorting and opening mail, purchasing and receiving equipment and sup- plies, keeping records, selling books and supplies to stu- dents, and admitting students to ECC. The administrative staff intends to serve the needs of the students at this col- lege effectively. х Mrs. Judy Weiman consults with Dr. Jim Owen about Ше purchase of new equipment. LIBRARY The Elizabethtown Community College Library is no w filled beyond its capacity, the number of volumes totaling approx- imately 16,200. The librarian subscribes to eighty periodicals, and subscriptions are constantly added. In the near future more shelving will be installed to alleviate the overflow of books. Dr. James Owen, the faculty and staff are intent upon helping to build the collection so that it will be adequate to serve the college and the community. Included in the library area are a reading room, stack area with study carrels and an audio-visual room. Newspapers, periodicals, unabridged dictionaries, and the atlantes are in the reading room. The books and bound periodicals are in the stack area. Audio-visual acquisitions include film strip viewer, micro-reader printer and stereo equipment with earphone at- tachments. There are recordings of classical, jazz, and popular musics plus readings in poetry and drama. Some of the students who are employed under the Work Study Program are library assistants. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Both modern technology and traditional scholarships are combined to make the freshman English program one of the most exciting and effective in higher education today. In this ad- vanced-concept course, students meet for profes- sionally prepared and edited audio-tape lectures once each week. Following the tape session, stu- dents meet in small classes for group discussion of the principles of writing covered by each tape. And finally, for individual help, students attend writing laboratory sessions in which tutorial assistance is provided by experienced writing instructors. Un- like freshman English courses in most colleges, which tend to be either “introduction to literature” courses of “English for English majors courses, freshman English at ECC is an “English for every- body course. Such things as poetry, novels, creative writing—the usual “stuff” of English classes—these the interested student can pursue on his own: he won't find them in freshman English at Elizabethtown. an SPEECH Mini-skirts—midi-politics— maxi-problems. Our highly com- plex and extremely mobile soci- ety makes demands of all of us, the greatest and the least of which depend upon accurate communication. Through the Speech Program at ECC, the courses of study in public speak- ing, oral interpretation, and argumentation play an in- tegral and rewarding role in the college and the community. A course strongly recommended for all Education majors at ECC, Speech is encouraged as an excit- ing elective for all students. 12 After a semester in the reading laboratory, students can cover reading assignments in one-half or one-third the time it formerly took and remember more of what they read than they ever thought possible. In an age when knowledge doubles frequently and current theories become obsolete overnight, speed and accuracy in reading is the only way any college student can keep up with his own generation. Students in the Reading Center double or triple their reading speed in one semester without any loss in compre- hension. The semi-automated laboratories are available to any student who needs or wants to improve his reading skills. Programmed to accommodate readers with varying reading abilities, the laboratories concentrate on specific physiological aspects of reading which train students to read increasingly difficult material, while at the same time raising both comprehension and speed. time HUMANITIES In the class Music in Western Civilization, students learn to listen to records so that they can understand how melody, rhythm, and harmony fit together to give the music meaning. At the same time they learn to recognize the composers and styles of great music from the various periods of music history. The greatest art of Western Civilization, projected in color on a 10 X 15 foot screen, gathers the attention of students taking the Art History humanities courses. Sculpture, architecture and painting are illustrated by 35MM slides made in the world's most famous galleries and museums as the course moves forward from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome, through the Gothic, Renais- sance and Baroque styles to end in the phantasmagoria of modern art. Beyond the slide lecture, students may study these works at their own leisure at the slide-study screen in the audio-visual room adjacent to the library. Detailed views and close-up analysis make available intimate knowledge of the works of master artists, sculptors and architects, and bring to the student even greater understanding and appreciation than could be achieved by first-hand examination of the original works. i | | FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT HISTORY The subject of history is at the very center of a liberal arts curricu- lum. Basic to many fields in Arts and Sciences is an understanding of man's struggle and his accomplish- ments. Elizabethtown Community College offers surveys of American History and European History in addition to a number of more specialized history courses in the belief that an intelligent under- standing of the complexities of civilization is vital for intellectual maturity. The Modern Foreign Language Department at Elizabethtown Com- munity College offers the first four semesters of French, German and Spanish. As a branch of the liberal arts curriculum, one of the funda- mental aims of language study is to broaden and deepen the students acquaintance with the world about him through the medium of language and literature. Facilities at ECC include a modern laboratory with thirty listening and fifteen re- cording stations. The student who offers two high school units of a foreign language may register for the first semester of the intermediate course if he scores satisfactorily on a placement test at the time of registration. MS sf à da- | p= ъа AN is to ts out “As citizens of this democracy,” a late American statesman told his audience, “you are the rulers and the ruled, the law- es at givers and the law-abiding, the beginning and the end. This Ty truth necessitates that the modern American has some know- res ledge of the contributions of Political Science. Basic courses in Political Science endeavor “to provide orientation and training high in the problems of citizenship. In addition, these courses are ge fundamental to students planning to enter the fields of law, ber af social science teaching, and governmental work. Ores st at - SOCIOLOGY While a study of the past may provide the individual with perspec- tive about the present, the social complexities of society often are overwhelming. Sociology endeavors to analyze the “fundamental processes of group relationships, social organi- zations, and social behavior” and leads to a better understanding of this social environment. The College offers basic Sociology courses for students whose vocational plans in- clude law, social work, industrial relations, the ministry, planning and zoning, high school social science teaching, and various positions in public and governmental agencies. CHEMISTRY Student experimentation in chemistry is considered an important part of the curriculum. The new chemistry facilities are among the finest for any junior college in Kentucky. Students have access to the most modern equipment avail- able in chemistry. We offer all chemistry courses which are re- quired for the first two years of a chemistry major or chemistry related areas. These courses include general chemistry , quantita- tive analysis and organic chemistry. SSE anco PHYSICS Although the classes are small, science and engineering students at ECC perform a variety of experiments utilizing a well-equipped physics laboratory. The first two years of virtually every engineering and physics program offered by the state universities of Kentucky can be completed at Elizabethtown. In addition, a special physics course for pre-med students is offered. ASTRONOMY A fascinating study, new equipment in- cluding a six-inch Newtonian reflector tele- scope, and recent advances in space have combined to make astronomy one of the most popular courses offered. Its non-math- ematical descriptive approach meets the needs of our non-science majors as well as our science and engineering students. There are eighty-five currently enrolled in Astronomy. BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT The Biological Science Department offers two introducto- ry courses in biology for both the majors and non-majors. It also offers courses in anatomy and physiology, micro- biology and dendrology. These courses are designed to ac- quaint the student with basic principles in the biological sciences and to give him some understanding of man and his environment. MICROBIOLOGY ТТА Чаара а as — ayia ; е я à qt vei с бе =] uu d s зе) тт уд? | aee e pel 23 i MATH DEPARTMENT BALK d At Elizabethtown Community College, as at any institution of higher education, mathematics is vital to the curriculum. In addition to being essential to the physical sciences and engineer- ing, its influence is felt in the fields of business, biological science, and social science. For this reason, all students in these fields of study must take a prescribed sequence of courses in mathematics. However, mathematics should not be thought of as just a “tool,” for it is a science in its own right. As an elective, a mathematics course is a worthwhile and challenging experience, and is a good exercise for the mind. BUSINESS AND OFFICE EDUCATION The Business and Office Edu- cation program, provides a two- year experience which includes both business and general educa- tion. The goal of the Profession- al Secretaryship program is to pre- pare students to perform with proficiency the many and varied duties of a secretary. Courses in shorthand, typewriting, office machines, filing and accounting are emphasized. During the fourth semester, the students are enrolled in an internship program which provides actual on-the-job training. Upon completion of this two-year program, the students are awarded Associate Degrees in Applied Science. Also, students have the option to pursue a baccalaureate degree. They may complete their first two-year's study at Elizabethtown Community College and then transfer to a four-year institution to finish their major in business education, business administration, or arts and sciences. BUSINESS А student interested in earning a baccalaureate degree in business may complete his freshman and sophomore years at Elizabethtown Commu- nity College and then transfer to any college or university. The require- ments parallel with the University of Kentucky's but can readily be adapted to any college's requirements. In business there is a definite need for employees at the technical or semiprofessional level. The Management Technology program at ECC is designed to prepare students for employment at the junior management level. The curriculum includes general education courses in addition to the business courses. There are four options in the Management Technology program- data processing, agriculture business, accounting, and the general option—which give the students an opportunity to select the area in which they are most interested. After completing the two-year program, the students are awarded an Associate Degree of Applied Science. 21 Mrs. Lila E. Keiser, Chairman Sophomore nursing students looking for the “unknown” in a N U RSI N G microbiology class. The Associate Degree Nursing program was activated at Elizabethtown Community College in the Fall of 1965. This pro- gram in nursing education is generally established as an integral part of a Community College and the Community College System of the University of Kentucky now has seven such programs. The Associate Degree program is complete for its own purpose and is not equivalent to the first two years of a baccalaureate program. Graduates are prepared to give care to patients as beginning general duty nurses, drawing upon their scientific know- ledge and understanding of human behavior and needs. They are prepared to develop satisfactory relationships with people, to cooperate and share responsibility for their patients’ welfare with other members of the nursing and health staff, and to be self directive in learning from experience as practicing nurses. Pictured at right are several Sophomore nursing students doing re- search in the Hardin Memorial Hospital Library, one of the clinical laboratories used by the students. Mrs. Julia Robinson, a nursing instructor, is in the background. 22 Freshman nursing students learning the technique of hypodermic injections at Hardin Memorial Hospital—a clinical laboratory. Mrs. Martha Knudson, instructor in foreground. Freshman nursing students learning under the supervision of the clinical instructor, Mrs. Martha Hill, the tech- nique of taking vital signs. This type of program provides a means of correlating the philosophy and standards of nursing education with those of gener- al education. The overall standards and policies of Elizabethtown Community College apply to the program in nursing. The Asso- ciate Degree program is designed to fulfill the educational needs of qualified high school graduates (or those holding a high school equivalency diploma) (1) who want to prepare for nursing in a relatively short time and (2) who want to study in a multi-purpose collegiate institution where they share the responsibilities, privi- leges, intellectual and social experiences with all the other studen Students of nursing meet the requirements of Elizabethtown Community College and its nursing program for admission, con- tinuation, and graduation. Instruction in all areas of the curriculum, including the Arts ts. and Sciences is provided by College faculty members. The nursing faculty plans, organizes, and implements the nursing courses; the nursing instructors select, supervise, and evaluate all learning experiences including those in the various clinical practice areas. 23 Forestry and wood technology is a two-year program design- ed to train students in forest management and wood utilization. Students usually take their first year of study at any one of the community colleges and must take their second year at the Wood Utilization Center at Quicksand, Kentucky. Upon com- pletion of the program, a student receives an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences and is immediately employed either by such private industry as the wood pulp industry or by any one of the Federal parks. PHYSICAL EDUCATION | To add variety to the curriculum, physical education courses are offered at ECC. In addition to fencing and bowl- ing, golf and tennis have been offered. The facilities of the Elizabethtown Par-Three Golf Course have been offered for our use. The tennis lessons are taught at the Memorial Recre- ation Center's tennis courts. The students enjoy physical education classes in which they earn one hours credit. Fencing, our newest addition to physical education, is taught by Monsieur Coeur, who also furnishes all the needed fencing equip- ment. Bowling lessons are provided for the stu- dents by Dix-E-Town Lanes under the guidance of Mr. B. L. Taylor. All equip- ment is furnished by the lanes. 25 YE weed Professional Folk Singers entertained at an evening art pro- gram. 26 pup NA Backstage crew of Theatre Arts installs the lighting for the student production. These are the Ice-breaker, Homecoming, Halloween, Christ- mas, Valentine, and Spring Formal Dances. 29 YEARBOOK STAFF The students at the right worked diligent- ly to plan and layout the 1969 PORTRAIT. This is the first year for this publication which will be the yearbook for the present students and a public relations bulletin of ECC for prospective students. JOURNALISM The Journalism 203 class of ECC is responsible for publishing the school newspaper. This class involves both lec- ture and laboratory work. In the lecture one learns the principles of journalism and the mechanics of newspaper publish- ing. In the lab the student applies the skills he has learned by publishing the paper. The staff is composed of members of the class selected by the adviser and instructor, Mr. Francis. CHORUS The ECC Chorus, directed by Mrs. Camille Hill, rehearses two hours weekly, on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. In the fall semester they present a program for the Elizabethtown Women's Club and a Christmas Concert and Carol Sing at the college, as well as recording a radio pro- gram for WIEL. Before Christmas they went caroling at the Nursing Home and Hospital, ending with refreshments at the home of Mrs. Hill. Spring semester plans include a May Day Concert and perfor- mance at graduation exercises. | |ВКО is The biggest weekend of the year at E.C.C. is the Little Bitty Kentucky Derby. 2C- Skills, chills and spills are in store for those who participate in tricycle, bicycle, ure scooter, and skateboard races. E.C.C. invites contestants from surrounding high n schools to try their luck. The winners of some divisions go to University of Ken- lish- tucky in Lexington to compete in the Little Kentucky Derby where trophies for first, second, and third places are given. bers d i - Even teachers participate in the LBKD. NAT X V v A m cL 31 SCENES AROUND ECC Some of the most popular events of the day at ECC are jogging or playing a game of hearts in the lounge. Others use the lounge for watching their favorite after- noon soap operas or for last minute cramming for exams. Still others find time to “make time , while others settle lovers’ quarrels outside the lounge doors. For the athlete, ECC offers intramural basketball and football. The teams are sponsored by the different student organizations and indepen- dent groups. Each Friday afternoon or night the teams compete against each other. The winner will represent ECC at the Mountain Dew Festival at Prestonsburg. The faculty also has a team which provides more entertainment than competition. | INTRAMURAL SPORTS 33 34 The Student Congress in one of its weekly meetings discusses recreational equipment which it will purchase for use in the new Student Center. Oh my aching head! What a job to be Student Congress President. STUDENT CONGRESS The Student Congress serves as a link between the ad- ministration and the student body. It consists of three sophomore representatives, four freshman representa- tives, and its officers. This organization is concerned with the voicing of student opinion and seeing that it reaches the proper channels. The Congress is also actively involved in school activi- ties, sponsoring dances, various publications, and provid- ing an intramural sport program. The Congress also takes an active role in the community by sponsoring the Concert Lecture Series and by encouraging students to contribute to the community through participating in the Red Cross Bloodmobile Program.
