These same “eccos” can be heard silently settling in the corners of Eliza¬ bethtown Community Col¬ lege. They are silent at times as the printed page or as thundering as shoes shuffling down a crowded hallway, but somewhere in the long forgotten we can hear them. May you, as you scan this yearbook, find these same forgotten “eccos” again coming out of the far reaches of your mind to remind you of the days you spent in these hollow haUs. i- ' C ' :s%; 4 DEDICATION Quick to answer, slow to anger, Mr. Robert Keen is an invaluable asset to the college and its inquiring students. With his dynamic personality, helpful advice and guided assistance, he has soothed much of the anxiety of the students who filter into his office daily. With patience and understanding, he answers deliberately the myriad questions that pass between the students and himself. This training and Ws past experience have given him a firm background to enable him to develop the administration of the college. BURSAR-RECORDER Mr. Robert Keen, Bursar-Recorder of the Elizabethtown Community College, received both his Bache¬ lor’s and Master’s Degrees from Eastern Kentucky State College. He not only works constantly to ful¬ fill his position on the administration, but he also works to solve the problems and pressures of the students. Phyllis P. Lower division requirements for Bachelor’s Degrees in economics, banking, business administra¬ tion, marketing, general business, and accounting are offered at Elizabethtown Community College. Part-time Instructor Judith Bale MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE Margaret Jean Ryan B.A. University of Kentucky French. German, and Spanish are offered in the Modern Foreign Language Department of Elizabethtown Community College. Georgetown College M.A. University of Kentucky ENGLISH The English Department offers two semesters of freshman composition, journalism, public speaking, technical communications, several literature courses, composition for technical students, and various humanities courses. During the past year advanced freshman composition has been offered for those students showing outstanding ability in the field of English. Non-credit English classes have supplied basic fundamentals to students requiring a more stable foundation before entering the regular fresh¬ man composition classes. 10 Michael B. Students participating in the program read various selections in fiction and the Classics. Upon completion of this program, which requires passing a comprehensive examination and maintaining a 3.5 or higher grade point standing , ' a student will be graduated With High Honors. Donald F. Jenkins The curriculum of the Mathematics Department in¬ cludes college algebra and trigonometry, anal tics and calculus I, II, and III, fundamental concepts of mathematics, fundamentals of elementary mathe¬ matics, linear algebra, technical mathematics, and basic engineering graphics. Powell M. Livesay B.S. University of Kentucky 13 BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES The Biological Science Department offers courses in botany, anatomy, microbiology, zoology, dendrology, and biology. These courses are designed to provide the student with an opportunity to obtain a general background in the biological sciences and to give the student interested in this field the proper basic princi¬ ples and training. Peterson The Physical Science curriculum consists of four courses in chemistry, a course in geology, and three courses in physics. All of these classes include labora¬ tory sections. Mrs. Linda Beeler is the brisk and competent sec¬ retary of the Nursing Department of Elizabethtown Community College. Mrs. Martha Yates, Secretary to the Director, adds professional elegance and efficiency to the main office. 18 Mrs. Martha Yates Miss Patty Neal ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS Mrs. Mary Jane DeGroot, Receptionist, joined the administration near the beginning of 1967. Her friendly personahty adds much to the atmosphere of the front office. Miss Patty Neal began her duties as Bookstore Mana¬ ger in the fall of 1966. Under her direction the book¬ store was efficiently run. Mrs. Cheryl O’Brian, Admissions Director, carries out many duties such as recording grades, admitting students, and sending transcripts. Mrs. Cheryl O’Brian 19 ADMINISTRATIVE ASSOCIATES Mrs. Roberta Bruna Mrs. Roberta Bruna became a Library Assistant at the beginning of the second semester of the school year. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from the Uni¬ versity of Michigan. Mrs. Georgia Keen also assists in the Library. She has an R.N. from Berea College, School of Nursing. Miss Betty Jane McFarland is the Head Librarian. Cunningham .Nancy Nusz ADVISORS —Miss Brandenburg Mrs. 0‘Brian Delta Sigma Chi’s purpose is to promote learning, to foster school spirit and community service, and to develop moral character and social fellowship. To fulfill this purpose, the sisterhood participated in the following ac¬ tivities. The first and most important activity of the sorority this year was decorating for the Christmas Dance. Delta Sigma Chi also helped sponsor the LBKD, helped serve the blood donors when the Bloodmobile was at E.C.C., and helped at the measle clinic. The sorority also took baskets of food to needy families at Thanksgiving. Jackie Carter Sandy Mclntire The purpose of Kappa Phi Kappa is to serve the community to the best of their abihty by upholding the ideas of sisterhood, femininity, and by Chris¬ tian morality. The sorority participated in several community activities by giving Thanks¬ giving favors to the hospital; by serving refreshments for the outpatients at the TB Clinic; by giving a Christmas party to the hearing center, and by giving a Christmas party for the soldiers at Ireland Army Hospital. The Wesley Foundation has undertaken two service projects this year. Karen Harper Claude Richardson Advisor—Mr. Isbell The Biology Club serves in informing its members of professional oppor¬ tunities in the field of biology and in striving to further high scholastic achievement among its members. The Biology Club hosted several speakers at their meetings. The speakers included Joe Bruna, wildlife biologist; Modesto Del Castillo and Joe Isbell, biological science instructors; and a member student, Jake Karnes. Among the activities of the Biology Club were initiation of new members, a spring outing, co-sponsorship of the Valentine Dance, and active partici¬ pation in the intramural sports program and bloodmobile. Drama Club delighted many members of the community with a fantasy dance scene based on an original interpretation of Dukas’ “Sor¬ cerer’s Apprentice” in the Junior Women’s Club Follies of 1967. This year the Drama Club is laying the groundwork for its major production scheduled for early spring, 1968. Some of the activities of the SNEA included sponsoring a postage dance to make money to send books to India, and decorating for the Christmas Dance. They presented two evening concerts: a Christmas concert Deeember 7, and in the spring a concert of music by American composers. Dew Festival at Prestonburg. Basketball was initiated into E.C.C.’s intramural sports program this year. There were eight teams sponsored by the various organizations, a faculty team, and one independent team. Cards and ping-pong are favorite pastimes for students between classes, MISS AND MR. The holiday season provides a theme for the Winter Wonderland Dance! Entertainment was provided by Gary Edwards and the Embers. CHRISTMAS DANCE In addition to the shopping sprees and the mistletoe madness, to many of the students at Elizabethtown Community College Christmas means fellowship and companionship, dancing and singing carols, the end of books and the begin¬ ning of Christmas vacation; but most of all the spirit of the season can be seen radiating from the students’ faces. Regina, Joan and Martha, the speediest girls around E.C.C. were winners of the tricycle and scooter races. It’s not your turn yet! After a hot day at the races, there’s nothing like a good shot to steady your nerves. United we stand . . . divided, we mess around a lot. Onlookers onlook. Variety was the word for the skateboard event. 56 The biggest weekend of the year at E.C.C. comes in the form of the Little Bitty Kentucky Derby. Trike, scooter and bike races, skate board competition, tugs of war, and obstacle races were the major events of the day. This is a heck of a way to earn a cracker! On April 17, 1967, Jesse Stuart, Kentucky’s Poet Laureate, spoke at a student convoca¬ tion. The crowd responded to his quick wit and yarn-spinning by giving him a standing ovation at the end of his talk. Mr. Stuart greets students and visitors from the community. They all came to hear Mr. Stuart! Mr. Stuart autographs one of his many books. Jesse Stuart answers one of the many questions addressed to him by interested students. Dr. Hartford, Dean of the Community College System; Mr. Stuart, and Dr. Owen watch students assemble in the convocation room. The Chorus presented a concert and student carol sing at Christmas.
