All of us on the passenger list of FLIGHT X-'61 gratefully dedicate this yearbook to our local, inspirational heritage. The garden-like countryside, the lovely woods bordering our streams and ponds, the rising church spires pointing our thoughts heavenwardg the efficiently-Planned, well-staffed schools, the hard-working, frugal, kindly home-town folks who give us Park recrea- tion, scouting, Little League, Boys' Club, the colorful, meaningful customs, such as the Memorial Day activities, the Easter egg hunt, Santas castle, the Community Day Picnicfare all a part of Elizabethtown area, This is more than a placeg it is a way of life that shapes our characters and molds our ambitions. , - .... DR. GALEN KILHEFNER The smooth operation of the Elizabethtown area school district is the responsibility of Dr. Galen C. Kilhefner, supervising principal. He came into the present position in 1953, first serving the borough and then the entire area after the merger. Entering 'the educa- tional profession in 1930, he was a member of the faculty at East Lampeter Twp. H. S. Cnow a part of Conestoga Valleyj teaching algebra, science, physics and chemistry. Here he advanced to principal, then supervising principal. It was an appointment from the College that brought Dr. Kilhefner to Elizabethtown in 1945. Dr. Kilhefner completed the requirements and received his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952. His doctoral dissertation subject was Student Personnel Services in the Colleges of the Church of the Brethren. The quiet manner qf Dr. Kilhefner has made him a well liked, well respected indi- vidual and the ability with which he handles his job makes it difficult to realize how big it is.
