And as they were bidden so came they in large numbers to the place set apart in the land called the Comrunity Bu1ld1ng and d1d eat of the good thlngs of the land and d1d rejoice with the class of four and forty at the good fortune which had come to them 1n return for all thelr long and patient laboring at the task that had been set before them And men of high standing 1n the land d1d speak unto the people words of wisdom and of cheer and of encouragement, and did in many feeling words say farewell to the class that was departing And Lo! the class of four and forty did give much thanks to the class of five and forty for the pleasure they had provided and did g1ve them a fish fry And it came to pass that at the end of these three years that Edwin A West, the professor who had thus far traveled in their lead did go fro this country to far dlstart places a.d there was much gr1 f and sorrow 1n the land For verily, had he made hlmself dearly beloved by the class of f1ve and forty Chapter IV Now this, the fourth year of this great and wonderful class of five and forty has been one of much hard labor, and but l1ttle resting by the wayside for preparations have been mak1ng ready for them to take thelr final departure from the land Now, lt so happened that there dwelt 1n the adJo1n1ng territory, J W Puckett, a nan of much learnlng and good repute Who, hearlng of the departure from his post of Edwin A West, removed fron his f1eld of labor and dwelt in the land of 1earn1ng that the travels of the class of f1ve and forty mlght oontlnue for many days And it came to pass, that their eyes were turned toward graduat1on, but nany with one consent had made excuses The f1rst sa1d, 'I must needs toll at home Therefore I cannot graduate ' Another sa1d, 'I am dull and cannot learn I pray thee have are excused ' A thlrd said, 'I am go1ng to be marrled, and therefore I need not graduate And stlll another sa1d, 'My country hath need of me therefore I must depart from th1s band of learning So thus did th1s class decrease 1n number until the whole number at the erd of the last year was four and thlrty Now, the officers for this fourth year were as follows: Charles Maness, Pres1dent, Frances Jackson, Vice Pres1dent, D J Tate, Secretary Treasurer And lt so happened that the class did find themselves most brave, chose to be one of their colors the blue of the sky which was to be unto them a symbol of truth, and for the other, wh1te, a symbol of purity They also chose thelr flower, the pale blue forget re not And it came to pass that on the tenth day of April of the year forty and f1ve th1s class d1d go to a place set apart, by their leaders, and lo' they did eat and be merry and they d1d call th1s a welner roast Now the class of seven and forty, seeing that this class was to depart from this land of learn1ng, d1d give them a great feast on the twenty seventh day of the fourth ronth of the year of flve and forty at a place chosen by this group wherewith to b1d then farewell So lt has come to pass that of the one and fifty that entered this land, only th1rty four shall depart, for verily I say unto you, that narrow 15 the way that leads to graduatlon and few there be who flnd lt And now may the bless1ngs that ever attend the noble and good and true, follow and abide with us, each and all, now and forevermore llen K . ., D . . .
