Publication of the Yearbook Staff of ELIOT HIGH SCHOOL Eliot, Maine THE 1964 FOREWORD Editor's Foreword ELIOT FIRE STATION You, the itty-bitty green freshman; you, the silly but sophisticated sophomore; you, the jolly, hardworking junior; you, the self-assured, mighty senior - to everyone in Eliot High School - This is Our Year. This is the year of double-sessions, of shar- ing the high school with the junior high. This is the year with anew superintendent and principal, four new teachers who joined the old familiar teachers to welcome us to a new school term. This is the year of greater automation and greater unemployment; but this is also the year of the Test Ban Treaty. This is the year when a moose walked down Main Street, when our football team was better, and when physical education was introduced into the high school. This is the year of many things and they are all ours - This is Our Year. THIS IS OUR YEAR OF EDUCATION Administration faculty OF GRADUATION Classes OF CONTRIBUTION Activities OF COMPETITION Athletics OF PARTICIPATION Features OF SELECTION Advertisement 2 DEDICATED TO We proudly dedicate the Quill 1964 to you, Fred Goul. You are our friend of longest stan di ng in the school system. We remember riding on your bus and feeling secure knowing you were watching out forus when we were in elementary school. By your friendly personal attitude towards all, you have tied our class and school together. By working long hour sin the school build- ing you have made its appearance something which anyone connected with Eliot High School can be proud. You have constantly been aware of the prob- lems and needs of the Eliot school system. You have been a member on boards and committees in the town government wherever you could best serve the schools. Because you mean so much to all of us, the Class of 1964 dedicates it's yearbook to you. THIS IS OUR YEAR A year filled with laughter AT ELIOT HIGH SCHOOL We learned to accept victory. And sometimes defeat. 4 Junior High school took over in the afternoon. We cheerfully accepted our school day which started at 7 A.M. and ended at 12:30 P.M. Whether Cramming for quizzes We remember the fun of participation. or cheering our teams to victory we will treasure these moments. . . as they made up Our Year. 5 MOMENTS FROM OUR YEAR Waiting for football. Andrea Allain, Winner of ’The Voice of Democracy” for the state of Maine. 'Til never smile again” . . . after Sanford. ELIOT AND SOUTH BERWICK Maine School Union No. 5 GRAYSON A. HARTLEY. SUPERINTENDENT SOUTH BERWICK. MAINE To the Graduating Class: Commencement is an important milestone in your life, which marks the beginning of a new responsibility for each of you. As you become more independent, you become more responsible for your own actions and deeds. Making your own decisions and accenting the responsibility for your successes or failures are marks of a mature person. As you venture along the oath towards adulthood by accenting this new responsibility, and by embarking uoon your chosen field with a zest, you are well on the way to becoming a mature, worthwhile citizen of today's world. My heartiest congratulations on your graduation, and all best wishes for your future success. Sincerely, GRAYSON A. HARTLEY ! Superintendent of Schools The Students Eliot High School Eliot, Maine Dear Students: The day school opened, T spoke frankly with you about the problems we would face together throughout the year. At that time I requested your cooperation and assistance in finding solutions which would improve the educational experiences at Eliot High School. It would be difficult to tabulate the number of times throughout the year you have shown me vour willingness to help and to take responsibility. If nurtured, these excellent attitudes toward others and toward education will Insure you a place in this world suited to your needs and desires. You are to be commended for the goals which you have now reached. Challenges are ahead for each of you, and, as you proceed, you will have to find ways to meet these challenges. The degree to which you have applied or are presently applying yourself in acquir- ing an education at Eliot High School will in large part determine your personal success and the contri- butions you will make to others and to your country. It would be impossible to measure the value of the inspiration they have been to us. The double session has been a trying situation for them as well as for us, and we are grateful for their tireless efforts to main- tain the high standards of our school. Their effective leadership has provided the learn- ing experience that makes this, Our Year, a memorable one. Seniors struggle with parallel structure, IVANHOE, and Chaucer and find how much there really is to this subject called English. English III English II 31 Trigonometry Michael O’Malley MATHEMATICS Mathematics--General Math, Algebra I and Algebra II. Now we all know what our fingers are for when we have these numbers. All those figures and signs! Then we progress to Business Math, Geome- try, and Trigonometry. We are sure Euclid and Pythagoras would puzzle over some of our answers to the problems in geometry and trig- onometry. Mrs. Fogg Trigonometry 33 SCIENCE General Science In General Science we learn about first aid, atomic energy, weather, and other scientific data; and in Earth Science we learn more about terra firma. Biology holds a special place in the hearts of those who love to disect worms, frogs, and cats. The classification of plants and animals gives a headache to quite a few. In Chemistry we wonder why the building is still standing. New words are learned--valence, oxidation, and the difference between cuprous and cupric. 34 Earth Science 35 Mr. Morgan Mrs. Mullins Mr. Cerabona SOCIAL STUDIES Social studies in Eliot High School covers United States History, Civics, World His- tory, World Geography, Ancient History, and Twentieth Century Civilization. The History Department has prepared us in the knowledge of long ago and of today. We will always carry with us their interest and background material as we continue our search of the world. FOREIGN Buenos Dias and Abran ustedes los libros are familiar phrases to Spanish students. This is the first year we have had Spanish in our curriculum. It has been very valuable and interesting to be taught by Senor Orlandini who was the Consul to the Canary Islands. 38 LANGUAGES French nasal sounds, so strange to first year students, initiation, le or la before every noun, The Fable of The Fox and the Crow, hearing our voices on the tape recorder, and Mr. Orlandini forever having to keep us quiet--these are things we remember about French. 39 COMMERCIAL Typing I—overjoyed with no homework, be- wildered when a finger gets caught between the keys. Typing II--working for speed, dreading car- bon copies, experimenting with the electric typewriter. Shorthand--buying a fountain pen, trying to keep up with dictation. Bookkeeping--using the adding machines, trying to make those numbers check. All of this adds up to future secretaries-- good ones too! Shorthand Bookkeeping 40 VOCATIONAL Mr. Hartford Vocational students apply practical skills. The Industrial Arts De- partment allows the students to construct their own ideas with their hands. What kind of work do you suppose I am best qualified to do ? What colleges offer courses in meteorology ? Can I get into a college with my marks? What College Board Exams would I have to take ? Everyone has problems when growing up. Rapid changes and the population increase give young people more problems then ever before. Guidance services have been set up in schools everywhere to meet real needs. The guidance office becomes a storehouse of information needed by students in high school for planning their future. Tests of interest and aptitudes, counseling interviews, and descriptive information on schools and on job opportunities are among the guidance services performed by the guidance counselor. 44 STUDENT COUNCIL t L' A S'd 1 V SEATED: C. Rogers, J. Davis, R. Stephens, Mr. March, advisor, J. Stuart, P. Thiffault, D. Lindstedt. STAND- ING: P. Dumas, V. Barnard, E. Pare, M. McDonough, E. Roark, P. Waterman. The purpose of the Student Council is implied in the name of this organization. It is a representative body of students united to serve the school. Matters concerning the welfare of students are discussed at Council meetings. Pupils through their respective representatives may express their needs to the school administration. The following are some of the activities in which the Council has participated this year. The Council represents all students in sending flowers to the sick or those who have been bereaved. Dress up days and occasional assemblies have been sponsored. Last September entering students received a handbook telling them about the school. Council members handled the making of announcements at basketball games. A committee has helped to plan the calendar of school events to prevent conflicts and to settle problems arising when two organizations desire the same date. A food sale and a school dance were conducted to raise money for the Council. We elected our officers as follows: President. . . Vice president Secretary. . . Treasurer . . . The Quill staff has worked very hard this year to make the Quill one of the finest yearbooks put out. We have spent a lot of time and thought on ways to make this book look new and different. We are especially pleased with the new colored inside covers. The picture shows the Indian Chiefs and the National Honor Society. Now that the book is finished, the staff would like to express their appreciation and thanks to all of those who made this book possible. We hope that you will enjoy the pic- tures, activities and memories that it provides as much as we have enjoyed working on it. 49 THE INDIAN CHIEFS SEATED: Mr. Furtwengler, Advisor, P. Alden, D. Newson, J. Perham, D. Maynard. STANDING: E. Brown, M. O'Malley, J. Covington, T. Chick. One of the newest organizations on the high school scene is the Indian Chiefs. The membership is made up of the Presidents and Vice Presidents of the classes. Mr. Furtwengler is their advisor. The Chiefs were very helpful in directing the traffic of students who were having their pictures taken for the Quill , this eliminated much confusion and made it possible to schedule the group pictures easily and efficiently. A survey lias been taken of how the students study. The information from this sur- vey has been carefully compiled and evaluated to obtain information so that greater help and direction can be given to the study methods of the students in the school. 50 ks: SAFETY COUNCIL SEATED: Mr. Perham, advisor, L. The Future Teachers of America held its first and only meeting in September. At this time Priscilla Alden and Donna Durard were appointed by Mr. Freese to head the organization. A schedule was set up, and once a week each of the members went to a classroom in the elementary building where they observe the teachers at work. They sometimes assist by running off papers in the office and aiding in other small capacities. It is hoped that in the second half of the year that the club will become more active by assisting their own school and perhaps by giving a scholarship to a deserving senior. 53 CHORUS FIRST ROW: R. A Christmas program was put on with the help of our music supervisor, Mr. Livingston, and Mrs. Hannigan who accompanied on the piano. The Spring Festival was planned but it has been very difficult to hold rehearsals with double sessions. The pupils were required to stay after, consequently, the chorus has been discontinued for the remainder of the year. Mr. Livingston hopes to have a Junior High School Chorus. 54 MAJORETTES The majorettes have had a full schedule of activities this year.
