M. Barrett is shown demonstrating the method which the class uses. Senior English students are discussing the effects of Transition Periods in English Literature. Mrs. Obrey is acting as the chairman of the class discussion. 34 French “College Bowl,” a game which tests students’ knowledge of all aspects of French culture, is a weekly part of the French 3 and 4 class’s program. The use of a tape recorder for class work, greatly benefits the individual student’s pro- nunciation and ability to read French fluently. Math Mrs. McGraw and Mr. Davis are the teachers in the Math Department. Many new films have been added to the Department this year and have been very useful in class instruction. The teachers in the Science Department are Mr. Morrison and Mr. Whitney. The Biology and Earth Science classes have undertaken a few projects this year, both worthwhile and interesting. Mr. Robert Morrison, Phvsics instructor, is the advisor of the newly estab- lished Science Club. The following are the purposes set down by the members: 1. To develop the habit of teamwork coupled with independent and creative thinking, and to further pursue some aspect of science. 2. To develop an appreciation of the scientific methods of inquiry, and also an appreciation within the science field. 36 Science 37 Social Studies Mr. Perham is shown instructing a class of Driver’s Education on the effects of centrifugal force. Mr. Cerabona is also a social studies teacher. Ancient History, U. S. History, Social Problems, and Problems of Democracy are his courses. Mrs. Mullins teaches World History and Social Problems, also. 38 Commercial Education In the Commercial Department, students are taught the basic fundamentals of the business field. Here is the second year typing class, which is given an op- portunity to work with actual business problems. Industrial Arts Each year the Industrial Arts Program of Maine holds a Fair in which any shop student in Maine may enter. The last time Eliot Students entered, one re- ceived a first award ribbon on his project. This year, we again plan to enter the fair. Peter Fernald is entering a glass topped coffee table and James Randolf is entering a glass front gun cabinet; both show fine worksmanship. Let’s hope these boys receive recognition. Many other areas are taught in our shop also. You are always welcome to come in and look around. 40 Football This year’s football season was not as successful as we had hoped, but the training which we received this year will help us to have a better season next year. We assisted with a Teacher’s Club meeting during the month of January, at which several of us served refreshments. We sold candy for Valentine’s Day at which time we made eighteen dollars. We have enjoyed the pleasure of observing classes in session at the Primary School, under the co-operation of Mr. Freeze, Mr. Dalessio, and Mrs. Mullins. We assisted the teachers in various ways, such as correcting papers, and helping to plan some of the future activities. We are hoping to help two deserving seniors, who plan on being teachers, as we have in the past, by presenting two seventy-five dollar scholarships at gradu- ation. In order to earn money for them, we are planning a record hop to be held on May 4, 1963. 55 E. H. S. Chorus First row: R. Lane, S. Plaisted, D. Crowell, S. Gauthier, D. Brannen, R. Aiguier, B. One of the most coveted honors given to a girl and boy graduating from Eliot High School is that of having their names embossed upon the Good Sportsman- ship Award. The candidates are selected by the Student Council members from the senior class. Six girls and six boys names are given to a board of three teachers who have been nominated by the Student Council. The board of teachers select the three boys and three girls to be presented in nomination to the Student Body for the election of the winners of the award. Presented to the school by the class of 1953, the award fosters good sportsman- ship in our high school and is indeed a cherished and a most deserved honor.
