Spirit of koinonia is present in Elida T hose ancient Greeks had a word for it, for sharing and caring not in the manner of an observer showing feeling for characters in an absorbing novel or play, but as a participant actively seeking to better his associations with family, friends and acquaintances. The wordg Koinonia. Area churches promoted the spirit of Koinonia through outreach projects, but student leaders representing the senior class, student council and yearbook, meeting August 11, 1976, discussed the possibility of using this powerful word as the Elida High School theme for the 1976- 1977 school year. Enthusiasm for the Greek noun koinonia was immediate, but whether or not it could be made relevant for Elidans in the coming school year seemed open to ques- tion. Then came the observation that people sincerely caring about people always dis- played koinonia whether the .actual word was expressed or not. All Elida enthusias- tically expressed the spirit of koinonia when the baseball team returned from Columbus with the state championship trophy last June 5. ' It was displayed when the marching band earned the third place trophy out of sixty bands participating at the Niagara Falls, Ontario, Band Festival in May. Obvious caring by students and faculty existed when dozens of Elidans supported teacher Mike Estes in the 1976 cancer bike-a-thon. As a result, Mr. Estes won the Allen County race earning 51,376.00 for that cause. Nationally and locally concerned govern- ment leaders, in an attempt to minimize a possible swine ilu epidemic, inoculated over 7,900 Elida area residents in October, 1976. Caring was clearly evidenced. These are examples of the sharing, car- ing, and communication in the highest positive way. And that is what koinonia is all about. Reflector '77 invites all readers to peruse the 272 pages of the eighteenth volume of Elida's yearbook as the staff shows how 1700 Elidans pro- moted the spirit of koinonia. 2 Opening
