Carter, coffee and cold make history during '76-'77 term W ith the election of Jimmy Carter, America's thirty-ninth President, the country could look forward to four years of peanut jokes. Question: Why did the people of Plains, Georgia have peanut- butter for Thanksgiving? Answer: Because they sent their turkey to Washington. Perhaps this humor provided welcome relief from the more than two years of anti-Ford humor, inaccurately portraying the ex-President as bungling and un- coordinated. Elida students gave the Republicans whopping election majorities in a state narrowly going for Gritz and Fritz. Local students and their parents, like millions of compulsive coffee-drinking Americans, refused to give up their favor- ite breakfast brew despite its soaring prices. Baby it was cold outside and inside, too. With the coldest temperature in the history of the weather bureau, Elidans and their fellow-Ohians shivered as the temperature dipped to -25 January 19. Classroom thermostats set at 65 assured the use of extra sweaters and coats in the classrooms. Sports-lovers, thrilled at Elida's State Baseball Championship, were also totally mesmerized by the gymnastic skills of Olympic winner Nadia Comaneci and the thrilling even though unsuccessful effort of the U.S. Cycling team with Limalander Alan Kingsbery of the U.S. Olympics Team. What a year was the noncommittal comment of many who would forever re- member the 1976-1977 school term. Q ' f i . Q if . . iw? N ear' .affagiafm ii Gigi 7 ' ' .Z 7 , 1' , ' -.. . With three separate acts, the play provided both comedy and suspense for the audience. Several months of preparation went into the production of the play, beginning with the try-outs in mid-September. Under the direction of Miss Pam Grear, the cast members devoted much of their time concentrating on stage fundamentals and learning lines. Main cast members included Geary Hilleary, Julie Golding, Lisa Bowers, Chris Miller, Lynn Klingler, Deana Swartz, Lynda Francis, Nancy Lloyd, Tesa Brenneman, Doug Vandemark, Jack Tanguay, Dave Martz, Jim DeMoss, and Kenny Walters.
