Zlcruss be9upe1fintenhent'5 ask is At a time when nation-wide publicity is being given to the necessity For educating more people in math and science, it is a pleasure to report the status oF your school in this phase of education. We have a two- year lead in this respect on many schools. Increased emphasis was placed on math and science at Elgin three years ago when members of the Board of Education emphasized that the very life of our nation depended upon it, and that opportunities for our young people appeared to be best in these fields. We now can appreciate the wisdom of their thinking. The school's offering in math and science includes, composite math, Algebra l, plane geometry, Algebra ll, general science, biology, physics, and chemistry. A check of the '57and '58graduates reveals the Follow- ing percent of graduates completing the various courses: General Science 98 'Xa Composite Math 35 'Ma Biology 77 'Xa Algebra l 91 CZ: Chemistry 57 'Ka Algebra ll 27 CZ: Physics 57 96 Plane Geometry 31 OA: The above figures are very complimentary for science, but we have many more capable students who are not taking the advanced math courses. This must be corrected. This is only a part of our total school program. The lowa Test scores reveal a strong English Department, industrial arts, vocational agriculture, vocational home economics, and business. Other schools always count it a major honor when they are finally able to defeat Elgin in athletics. lt is hard on the coach to have a team which all others want most to beat, but it brings pride to our community. l think you will Find this well rounded educational program beneficial to you, and l hope you can continue to bring honor to our school after your graduation as you have done while here. Arthur Farrar
