Y W .--,Air f 1-wH!WPff 'f T' l .Jaa- i r , l I OUR TOWN Located in the Medicine Creek Valley, the town of Elgin is surrounded by a fine farming area and abundant pasture lands which constitute the livelihood of many people. ln May, 1902, what is now Elgin, Oklahoma, celebrated the running of its first train simultaneously with the opening of the town then called Cee-Gee so-called after a railroad contractor, C. G. Jones. After learn- ing there was already another Cee-Gee, the name, Dowden, was used until L. E. Coffin, father of Charley Coffin, suggested Elgin after the city in Illinois. Finally it was agreed upon and Elgin had a name. In the sam.e year a school was established, serving also as a church for non-denominational services. The buliding still stands and is now being used as a recreation hall by the Catholic Church. Numbered among the Elgin School student body are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the original old timers, the Coffins, Brandons, Hasenbecks, Wallings, Wolcotts, and Raymond Harrel. Situated in the Northwest section of Comanche County only o few minutes drive from the scenic beauty of the Wichita Mountains, Elgin forms an ideal place to rear a family. No finer people can be foundi anywhere than the patrons of our town and our school. Spiritual development is well cared for by the three churches, two of which are housed in beautiful, new buildings. Mental and physical development is adequately provided for by the school which is the pride of Elgin. ' The school plant consists of a new modern grade school building, highi school and iunior high buildings, an ultra-modern gymnasium com- pleted in 1955, shop building and homemaking cottage. Elgin School runs eight school buses - three purchased new this year - picking up students from over the second largest district in the county. We have splendid vocational agriculture and home economics depart- ments, industrial arts, and an outstanding business education depart- ment sponsoring the school paper, The Owl-Gin Chat, which has won many superior ratings. Located only eighteen miles from Cameron College at Lawton and thirty-five miles from the Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha, Elgin students have an advantage for college training.
