LAURA MCCALLISTER Mrs. Laura McCallister lovingly known as Mrs. Mac , has had a long and successful career of teach- ingp but because of ill health she was forced to end her teaching early in the school term of 1957-58. Having graduated from Lawton High School in May 1912, she started her teaching career at Emerson, a small town five miles west of Walters, in the fall of 1912. The next six years were taught in three rural schools near Lawton. ln 1919 she started a seventeen year tenure at her home school, Mineral Wells, three miles northeast of Lawton. While teaching there, she was selected as one of the ten outstanding rural teachers of the state. This selection was made by the State Rural School Supervisors. As one of the ten, she was awarded an all-expense paid, Five-day trip to the campus at Weatherford State College, where the ten were feted at receptions, teas, banquets, and parties. ln 1936 Mrs. Mac moved to Elgin and became principal of the two-room rural school at Beaver Valley which later became a part of the Elgin District. ln 1941 she started teaching in Elgin Schools and during World War ll, Mrs. Mac served as high school principal. She taught an emergency math course and American Literature besides algebra, general science, and geometry. Later she taught the science courses, general science, biology, and chemistry, along with physics and algebra. Her tenure at Elgin High School was sixteen years. She was selected Teacher of the Year of Comanche County in 1954, a title well deserved, for al- most every year she sponsored either the iunior or senior class being never too busy to give guiding coun- sel to some boy or girl. We will always remember Mrs. Mac and we know she will always be boosting Elgin School with every kind thought and word. THE STAFF
