Time for the Annual GAA Sports Review Broadcast! This is station WGAA bringing you the 1950-51 Sport Highlights direct from the newsroom of the Girls Phys- ical Education Department. This year has really been a very successful and eventful one. Activities were head- ed by Delphine Joerns, president, assisted by Dolores Kaplan, vice-president, while Margaret Lawrence kept the minutes up-to-date and Sandra Chaplain wrote notes. Willene Steele managed finances. Officials who saw that all games were played fair and square were Miss Wilda Logan, Girls' Athletic director, and her co-sponsors, Mrs. Phyllis Apple and Mrs. Gene Stoerz- bach. Now, on with the big annual Girls Athletic As- sociation sports review! lOppositeJ Don Westphal, EHS high iumper, clear- ing the high lump bar at 5 feet 5 inches, in a dual meet against Joliet, to win first place for EHS in this event. - CBelowi Qualifying lor state finals, Don Westphal llefti cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet 9 inches, while Dick Simonsen lrighti completed the seventh best throw in the shot put. Coach Alexander ac' companied the two EHS stars to the state finals. - - 5 A i 1 ' X - - ' '.' Q In the twenty-eighth annual running of the Kane County track meet Elgin placed third among twelve schools. East Aurora placed first. Elgin now ties East Aurora with eleven county meet titles. Elgin was edged into second place by East Rockford in the third annual triangular meet. Dave Mumme eliminated a four-way tie for the pole vault record, when he cleared 10 feet 6 inches. Sweep Second Hand Trails Frosh-Soph Trackmen ln spite of the i950 Frosh-Soph track squad having an off season, several of the members were outstand- ing in various events. Notable among the contestants were Don Mapes' TOO and 200 yard runs, which he accomplished in almost the some time as the varsity Frosh-Soph 1950 track team members, first row: Don Mapes, Roger Tillman, Lester Groth, Neil Murphy and Richard Larson. Second row: Donne Plote, Carl Kleinschmidt, Seymour Narofsky, Stan Boncosky, Wayne Reinking, Roy Russell and Bob Ransom. Fall brought hockey, tennis, archery, riding and volley- ball. lt also brought three hundred members of the general assembly attending the state meeting of the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Safety Conference to Elgin. Demonstra- tion classes in Indian dancing and modern dancing plus a symposium, highlighted the day. Then came the winter season, meaning: basketball, tumbling, modern dancing, square dancing, ping-pong, bowling, bad- minton and table tennis. At last-spring returned and young girls' fancies lightly turned to an assortment of events, Softball, golf and track occupied the thoughts of our fair ones. Riding, tennis and volley- ball again appeared and were loudly welcomed. As a grand finale came Play Day, o bi-annual con- clave of Chicago suburban schools, held at Elgin this spring. Schools competed with color teams. And so another year of sports rolls away, a memorable year .- at fun and activity. A sport lor every girl and a girl for every sport is Miss Wilda Logan's motto. This is your WGAA reporter now signing off-'til next year! CAboveJ Dancing, oldest of the arts, assumes an im- portant role in Girls' Physical Education. Schultz, not present. lBelowJ Team work means a winning score and both of these GAA teams are out ot win, as this volleyball game gets going on an EHS outdoor parkway court.
