Mathematics The mathematics department emphasizes the practical value of mathematics, its use in occupations, and its informational value: it also emphasizes the development of the individual student by the exercise of his reasoning powers, his power of concentration, his imagination, and self-reliance. In order to promote interest in this suhiect the Math- ematics Club was organized under the supervision of Miss Peters: this club has aroused great interest among the students. Fine Arts The art department of Elgin High School offers more opportunities for creative work than most schools of the state. Excellent equipment and fine teachers combine to provide those wishing to elect the art course with a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of line and color, and prepare them for a more advanced course in college. Miss Knudson has charge of the music department, which has enjoyed a year of more than usual activity. A wide variety of musical opportunities are offered including major music. instrumental, and vocal organizations. Finished concerts by these organiza- tions are evidence of the excellent work done. Physical Education The progressive physical educator today is in favor of combining and unifying phys- ical and mental education as one purposive system of activities having their own end, and one sees the tendency very strongly in up-to-date schools. The aim of the physical education department is to provide an opportunity for the individual to act in situations that are physically wholesome, mentally stimulat- ing and satisfying, and socially sound.
