Fine Arts The art department of Elgin High School offers more opportunities for creative work than most schools of the state. Excellent equipment and fine teachers combine to provide those wishing to elect the art course with a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of line and color, and prepare them for a more advanced course in college. Miss Knudson has charge of the music department, which has enjoyed a year of more than usual activity. A wide variety of musical opportunities are offered including major music. instrumental, and vocal organizations. Finished concerts by these organiza- tions are evidence of the excellent work done. Physical Education The progressive physical educator today is in favor of combining and unifying phys- ical and mental education as one purposive system of activities having their own end, and one sees the tendency very strongly in up-to-date schools. Foreign Languages The aim of all the foreign language teachers is to make the life and customs of the people whose language they are studying a real functioning part of the life of the student. At present there are four languages offered to the students of Elgin High: French, German, Spanish, and Latin. Beginning Spanish is being discontinued because of its close relation to French. German was reintroduced in the fall of 1928 and has grown to Five classes for the present school year. The advanced classes in both German and French are making special studies of the life of the people Whose language they are studying. In the Latin 5 classes a decided change was made in the subject matter and authors. This now gives Work from Pliny, Gellius, Petronius, and Cicero of gradually increasing difficulty. . 15
