The department of linglish is organized on the democratic plan of each for all and all for the school. Meetings are held about twice a month for the purpose of discussing problems, objectives, and standards. While all have similar ohiectives, there is freedom in the manner of ohtaining these. Work in class and individual proiects is encouraged, but proiects are different with differ- ent teachers and with Xaried groups of students. This year special emphasis has heen laid upon the obtaining of better oral reading. To encourage iniproieinent in this work a Iunior Poetry Reading Contest was held in April in addition to the Ninth and Tenth Grade Read- ing Contests held in February.

CARRIE K. VVILLIFORD LILLIAN HURVITZ Univcrsitics of Chicago. llli- University of Illinois. nois, and VVisconsin. Library The heart of a school a high school library is sometimes called. Here centers a continual flow of interests in various lines of school work and contacts with many outside activities. It is a magic place where one may be carried back to any period of history and meet famous people of any age. Through books one may know, intimately, people whom he could not expect to meet personally. Treasures of literature are here: books of science, travel, shopwork, music, home management, business training, or art. This year more students than ever have made use of the library, although conditions have been inconvenient because of limited space, funds, and staff. HELEN L. Ravi-:TT AUGUSTINE M. GOTTA R. N. Health The school system now employs the full time of three nurses to help look after the health of the many pupils. They have regular inspections of all of the students in both the grade schools and the high school, and if necessary recommend further medical attention. In this Way many illnesses are stopped before they have a chance to become serious. The nurses' ofliee is on the First Hoor of the high school. and there is al- ways someone there to give help when it is needed. The Health Staff thus ren- ders a valuable service in the prevention of disease and the rendering of First aid. f' sg.

Science The study of science may he the study of the earth on which we live and its relation to the other planets, the study of the electric dynamo, the ability of nature to combine the raw elements in the con- struction of a beautiful Hower, or the chemistrv involved in changing a poisonous gas 10 3 sweet smelling perfume or a healing medicine, Science is always endeavoring to find an gn. swer to the many problems to which nature alone holds the solution. In this endeavor the chemistry classes are particularly interested in the visual aids, and many educational films, slides. and drawings have been used in pre- senting various projects.
