STUDENT COUNCIL President Donald Butler Vice-President Donald Cook Secretary Howard Rovelstad Treasurer lean Farmiloe Adviser Miss Cleary The first week of the school year found the Student Council of Elgin High School at work. In an attempt to relieve traffic congestion, each member was given a stairway to watch between periods. The locker and hall system Worked out in good order. Fewer lockers had to be opened and locked than ever before. The Student Council, with the aid of the faculty, was able to keep the halls quiet during the eighth period. Iurien Hoekstra, famous baritone singer, was presented October seventeenth on the Hrst Council Lyceum program, the Televox on December fifth, jess Pugh, humorist and interpreter, on March twentieth, and Art Young, archer, hunter, and lecturer, in April. Thirty-Five cents admitted any student to all four of the splendid programs, while fif- teen cents was charged for each single performance. On the last Friday of each month, the Student Council sponsored a school dance in the gymnasium. Favors and programs were given to each dancer on several occasions. The attendance record hit new high marks continually. An unusual campaign was put on by the representatives in what was known as the whistling campaign, its slogan being, A VVooden Whistle Wouldn't Whistlef, Not only was this a drive to do away with whistling, but with any other unnecessary disturbances. The Council consists of a president, chosen from the Senior Class, four representa- tives elected from each class at the beginning of the school year, and the presidents of the junior and Senior classes as ex-officio members. 20
