X53 The library is a resource center of instructional materials for the entire educational pro- gram and is an agency which helps students to use the library materials and facilities ae- tively. The library provides materials for reference use, for class work, and for personal en'o 'ment and satisfaction without relation to assi nrnent. l 5 g The language arts curriculum consist of courses, activities, and units of instruction which are designed to develop communication, skills in reading, writing, and speaking which are of value to all students in their personal, social, and occupational life. This department attempts to instill in the student a sympathetic understanding of the peoples ofthe world as well as the knowledge of their culture. The department consists of 4 years of English, 2 years of Spanish and approximately 300 students taking the various courses. LIBRARY LANGUAGE ARTS MUSIC

NATUR AL SCIENCE AND SOCIAL SCIENCE The Social Science department has approximately 250 students. This department offers three ctredits-World History, American History. Civics, and Texas History. Two and one- half credits are required for graduation. The objectives of this department are to teach students to understand the rights and duties of a citizen in a democracy, to promote international understanding, to acquire an understanding of world problems, and to think critically. ln the study of Natural Sciences one develops the habit of accurate observation and ap- preciation of objects encountered in early life, develops reflective thinking, and learns how to arrive at conclusions. The Science department offers six credits-Physics, Chemistry, General Science. and Bi- ology. Two credits are required for graduation. Scattered throughout the department are approximately 110 students taking science. uananunnew- t I5
