41.-.-A fx, , 4 K 1' US V 2 11 1 we If WEASTPAC CRUISE 1967 USS ELDORADO CAGC - 1 15 ELDORADO SI-IIP'S HISTORY Originally designed as the SS Monsoon and built by the North Carolina Ship Building Company, Wilmington, North Carolina, ELDORADO was converted to an Amphibious Force Flagship by the Bethlehem Steel Cor- poration at Brooklyn, New York. As flagship for Commander Amphibious Forces, U. S . Pacific Fleet, in World War 11 she lead the invading forces to the beaches of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. At the end of the hostilities, ELDORADO returned to the States, arriving in San Francisco October 12, 1945. f. After several trips to the Western Pacific acting as flagship for Commander Naval Forces, Western Pacific, ELDORADO was sent into action to support the Korean War. On August 28, 1950 ELDORADO departed San Diego for Inchon, Korea. She arrived in the latter stages of the invasion and acted as a standby flagship. ELDORADO spent 148 days at lnchon during which she transmitted the first pictures of the Kaesong Truce Talks to the outside world. Completion of the Korean War put ELDO- RADO back on rotation between Stateside and WESTPAC, acting as flagship for vari- ous Force and Fleet Commanders . In 1956 and 1957 the rotation was interrupted for replenishment runs to the Arctic to provide logistical support for our Air Defense Early Warning Stations . 1 ln October, 1962 ELDORADO made an eight-week deployment to the Caribbean during the Cuban Crisis. On her ninth WESTPAC deployment which began in january, 1964 ELDORADO spent 48 days at sea on patrol off the Vietnam Coast following the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Then after a FRAM ll overhaul, her tenth WESTPAC deployment and an eight month stay in the States, ELDORADO departed San Diego on 4 january 1967 for latest deploy- ment.
