Text from Pages 1 - 82 of the 1956 volume:

It was through the efforts of these men on our school board that plans for our new school were first made. It is a big step towards a better school system and it has alleviated the crowded conditions in our school. School Board LEFT TO RIGHT: Floyd Harmon, Forrest Vass, K. C. Finney, W. R. Burns, Leonard Tweed, John MeFall, and Don Benson. In grateful acknowledgement of the long devotion and service to the pupils of Eldon Public School, and in loving thanks for the work that went into your many baskets of delicious cookies, we the Senior Class wish to dedicate this annual to Cora Galloway and Mae Wagner. 9 ' ‘V. 3 Annual Staff EDITOR -IN-CHIEF Assistant Mary Ann Ward David Steele PHOTO EDITOR Assistant Connie Christy Bette Harding Helen Thomas BUSINESS MANAGER Assistant Fritz Burns Sandra Teeter HUMOR EDITOR Assistant Pamela Dehm Sharon Dugan ADVERTISING MANAGER Assistant Tommy Hemm Bill Canaday CLASS PROFHECY George Edgerly CIRCULATION MANAGER Assistant Mary Ann Ward Peggy Wilkinson CLASS HISTORY Yalanda Sumner Reithel Sumner LAYOUT EDITOR Carol Brown CLASS WILL James Fromi CALENDAR EDITOR Anna Marie Spilman SPONSOR Mr. Pollock SPORTS EDITOR Assistant Freddie Fligg Karen Pittman TECHNICAL ADVISOR Miss Hunter Student Council MR. From now on we'll leave it to the rest. Class Motto Today we build the ladder; Tomorrow we climb. Class Colors Blue and White Class Poem In our memories, our teachers will be. They always had time for you and me. We've tried to use their good advice. And we'll profit by it all through life. In sports and honors the highest we rate, For classes and practices we were never late. From early morning till late at night. We always tried to do what's right. Even though we have shed a few tears. We've had many good times in these past twelve years. The time for leaving is growing near. But to us Eldon High will always be dear. Class Will The Senior Class of 1956 being of sound mind and body do hereby make their last will and testament, on this 30th day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and fifty-six. We the seniors, as a class, in the presence of these witnesses leave to the Juniors all of our capable instructors and their idiosyncrasies that we have driven them to. To the sophomores we leave the education we have so painstakingly printed on the walls. Study it carefully, you'll hear those names again. To the freshmen we leave our ability to get as- signments the first time they're given. To the members of the faculty of old Eldon High, we leave the memories, good or bad as the case may be, that we have left on the walls, in the halls, and under the desks of Eldon High School. Charles McDaniel wills his china whiskers to Freddie Allman. Tommy Hemm leaves his vim, vigor, and vitality to Richard Hemm. George Edgerly leaves his ping pong ability to Charles Cubbage, and his seniority in the kitchen to Veryl Shaw. Bill Canaday leaves his good looks and his knowledge of it to Norman Tweed. Nora and Dora Saner leave their ability to look and act like two peas in a pod to Karen Pittman and Marcia Potts. Bill Rock leaves his ability to argue with teachers to Emma Lou Hopwood. Also his good posture and poolplaying abili- ty to Jim Kllcker. Connie Christy leaves her ability to be good to Ernie Sadler and her ability to play the bass drum to Susan Israel. Doris Jackson leaves her freckles to Sally Hancock. Good riddance I Shirley Hart leaves her small feet to Kay Canny in hopes that they will carry Kay as far as they carried her. Mary Ann Ward wills her position as editor of the annual to anyone stupid enough to get elected. Reithel Sumner wills her ability to copy to anyone who is fortunate enough to get someone else's paper. Freddie Fligg leaves his ability to work algebra problems to Stanley Curtis. James Fromi leaves his ability to absorb all important facts while apparently asleep to Jerry Sloan. Pam Dehm leaves her ability to get in trouble to Marcia Potts. Carol Brown leaves her red hair and freckles to Sandra Henderson. Jean Martsching wills her ability to talk and laugh in study halls without the teacher seeing her to Susan Israel. Anna Marie Spilman wills her height to Warren Ragen. Evelyn Houk wills her quietness to David Steel. Yalanda Sumner wills the luxury of riding in a Buick to Roddy Hogue. Gene Morrow leaves his Liberace hair style to Arthur Steele. Rex Hewitt leaves his magnificent brain cell to Dennis McDaniel. Russel McDaniel wills his ability to grow whiskers to Cecil Hewitt. In Witness Whereof, we the Senior Class representatives, have set our hands and seals to this document. Class Prophecy This morning my boss, the editor of the Eldon Times, rudely awakened me from my mid-morning snooze with these words, Edgerly, what happened to the seniors of 1956? I want a story, period. I arose, put on my hat, walked home, kissed my wife and sixteen kids good-by, and started out. This was my big story. First off, I made a trip down to Dupont's rival, Burns Chemical Co. and found Fritz Burns as head of the Glue Depart- ment, stickiest character since A1 Capone. Next, up to Hemm's manor, where I talked to the athlete of our class. Tom Hemm. He has—glub—sunk to great—glub—depths, in water polo. A trip across town to Eldon's other great thriving industry. Morrow's Corsets Inc., renewed my acquaintance with old Genie, the woman's friend. Now a trip up to Ottumwa, the old county seat, where I heard that my old classmate Bill Canaday, an up-and-coming politician, is running for Mouse Exterminator of Wapello County. Mr. Canaday informed me that our old pal, Shirley Pan- handle Flaherty, and her husband, Pat, are running Radio Station KFAD in Fairfield. 13 Next, I ran up to the twin cities, St. Paul and Minneapolis, where I found two of my own classmates twins, Dora and Nora. They're both married now, one to Anthony Wayne and the other to Wayne Anthony. Now the big question is, which twin has the Toni. Next, I hopped to Washington, D. C., where I found two of my former classmates. First I found Charles McDaniel who is directing work at the Pentagon. He is Chief of Staff, you know. A little Jaunt brought me down Pennsylvania Avenue where I was ushered into a meeting of the Senate, being capably pre- sided over by the first woman Vice-President, Anna Marie Spilman. From here I flew to New York where I visited the Greatest Show on Earth. Look who the fat lady is, Evelyn Houk, the same. While here in New York, I might as well stop and see Pam and Dale and get a free sample of the milk they are now pro- ducing. They have taken over Carnation Milks Inc., leaf, stem and petal. Now I was sent up river to Sing Sing, where I met one of America's foremost wardens, Carol Brown. She always had a way with men. Next, I took the Queen Mary bound for London and Paris. Well, look who's going to France. Reithel Sumner, the only woman to be stood up for twenty years. • London at last, and Scotland Yard where I met Sherlock Jo Sumner. She has become a woman bobby. Then I flew down to Egypt where I found a mummy in a pyramid, but wait, that's no mummy—that's Mary Ann Ward, the world's greatest archaeologist. She was always good at digging up dirt. I read in a Cairo paper that the long lost African expedition led by Fred Fligg and his associate (Bring 'em back dead) Christy has been given up as lost. They went on a safari all right, safari they never got back. Fred accumulated quite a fortune shipping snow from Alaska to the South Sea Islands before he went on his ill-fated expedition. As I was strolling down one of the many sandy streets of Cairo I was buzzed by our old pal, Tailspln Martsching. Among her many feats is flying around the world upside down. Back in the good old U. S. A. , the first stop was Reno, Nevada; where I saw that Harold's Place has become Jim's Joint. The main attraction is the presentation of Fromi's Frosty Frolics, featuring his five former wives. Say, that cigarette girl looks familiar. Well, it's Doris Jackson, Fromi's present wife—number thirteen. Well, I guess that's it. But wait! Didn't I forget someone? Where's Bill Rock? Las Vegas, what's he doing there? I see, he's setting up his massive tent for a church revival. He's been the leading evangelist since the time of Billy Graham. Now back to good old Iowa. I have one last stop to make, and what an appropriate place to end up, the Eldon Cemetery. Here I meet another of our former friends. At least I got within six feet of him. The epitaph is simple, simply VIP RLP ESQ RIP. They tell me he committed suicide eating chili powder. Well, there it is, in black and white. My big story as I lived it and wrote it. George Edgerly History -- Class of 1956 September 5, 1944, not a historic day or a world celebrated holiday, but one that will always be remembered by the gradu- ating class of 1956. On this morning for the first time in approximately six years forty boys and girls Jumped out of bed at sunrise and washed their faces. They had to be prepared for their long climb to an educated mind. Some of that group even today, twelve years later, are still climbing. This group of prominent ears and long braids were as follows: Larry Blanchard, Beverly Bostwick, Bill Brown, Lucille Brown, Betty Mae Campbell, Billie Campbell, Kenneth Carroll, William Canaday, Junior Essary, Lola Mae Davis, Pamela Dehm, Mike Dugan, Peter Donhoue, Rosemary Essary, Van Ja Elbert, Freddie Fligg, Jim Bell Fligg, James Fromi, Robert Gates, Shirley Hart, Tommy Hemm, Doris Jackson, Denny Kendrick, Evelyn Major, Sonja Moon, Kathaleen Norris, James Newberry, John Newton, Raymond Pickerell, Rolland Price, Susanne Rylee, Charles Robbins, Connie Sanford, Walter Snook, Reithel Sumner, Yalanda Sumner, Sandra Teeter, Lois Leinwever, Ralph Garrett, and Thomas Mullin. We were guided this first year by the light shed by Mrs. Helen Moon. Miss Margaret Montz, on September 4, 1945, greeted twenty-nine sleepy second graders. Sleepy? We've had one year of school; what more could you ask? Everybody gets tired. We lost a few this year. One year of school was enough for them. They had an educationi They were: Kenneth Carroll, Mike Dugan, Van Ja Elbert, Peter Donhoue, Robert Gates, Bill Brown, Sonja Moon, Bill Campbell, James Newberry, John Newton, Raymond Pickerell, Charles Robbins, Walter Snooks, Lois Leinweyer, Ralph Garrett, Lucille Brown, and Denny Kendrick. 14 Third year, alreadyl Yes, this morning, September 9, 1946, we began our year as third graders. Miss Otvetta Lampe looked out over her sea of shlningly blank faces and lo and behold, all were there. No one had dropped, school charms were increasing! We had gained four new students. They were: Connie Christy, Robert McCord, Patricia Hufsmith, and Mary Ann Ward. This year was an especially memorable one for us; we had our first taste of acting. Oh, what actors we made, running noses and all! Mrs. Amey Glotfelty welcomed us at the beginning of our fourth year. Her class of new students had been increased in number by nine. Deane Bolton, Fritz Burns, Donald Elkins, Wllda Pearson, Patty Stephenson, Duane Cloke, Richard Adamson, Martha Holcome, and Marjory Martin. We dropped Walter Snook. This year opened a new era for us in fractions and finger painting. Another school term had rolled around. The date was August 30, 1948. The setting, Eldon Public School. The cast, a group of fifth graders. Prompter, the late Hazel Hetrick. Patty Smith Joined our ranks. Ruth Gilyeart, Wilda Pearson, and Robert Lane left us. This year saw us take our first trip down the fire escape. In 1949, school began on August 29. We were eager to begin on that first day. We would whiz through this term, but as the first week in September rolled around, time stood still. To while away these school days we mastermined a theatrical production, The Kingdom of Bookenda, to commemorate book week. Also we fashioned bonnets and had an Easter parade. But we couldn't stop now; we decided to have a flower show. And this wasn't Just an ordinary one; we had weeds from all over town. All of these activities were accomplished under the guidance of Mrs. Helen Hughes. We gained some new pupils. They were: Carol Brown, Patty Pittman, Nancy Getty. Those leaving were: Beverly Lane, and Florence Bihian. Junior High at last. This school year began August 28, 1950. This was an important year for our athletic-minded students, because we had our first taste of basketball and cheerleading. Mrs. Mable Finney introduced us to all these new activities. We lost Albert Myers this year and gained a girl in his place, Anna Marie Spilman. We began our last year in Junior High on August 27, 1951. Beverly McKittrick Joined our class in February, and before the year was over we had lost three of our boys, Gary Cloke, Larry Sedore, and Duane Lang. We were kept pretty busy this year. We made and painted plaques and planned for our graduation exercises. On the night of our graduation a big change came over us all, an outward one at least. From what you could see, we were no longer a group of sloppily dressed kids; we were well dressed young men and women. Thirty-nine slightly green freshmen shook their way to school on September 2, 1952, to begin their first year in high school. They were: Fritz Burns, Carol Brown, Bill Canaday, Connie Christy, Kathy Creech, Sandra Deane, Pamela Dehm, George Edgerly, Donald Elkins, Charles Fitzsimmons, Freddie Fligg, James Fromi, Jack Glasgow, Shirley Hart, Tommy Hemm, Rex Hewitt, Janice Hewitt, Evelyn Houk, Doris Jackson, Robert McCord, Beverly McKittrick, Joyce Major, Jean Martching, Ronnie Mon-ison, Gene Morrow, Albert Myers, Patty Pittman, Bill Rock, Dora Saner, Nora Saner, Patty Smith, Anna Marie Spilman, Patty Stephenson, Reithel Sumner, Yalanda Sumner, Mary Ann Ward, Emelia Weeks, Carol Wilkinson, and Billie Ware. Initiation week turned us to a bright red, and not Just our faces. The Seniors of '52 swung a mighty paddle. As being a freshman is such a hard Job, we needed some relaxation, so we planned a party and a wiener roast. To give our treasury a boost, we held a skating party. We elected the following as our class officers: President, Fritz Burns; Vice- President, Gene Morrow; Secretary, Carol Wilkinson; Treasurer, Tommy Hemm; Reporter, Carol Brown; Student Council Rep- resentative, Patty Stephenson; Sponsor, Jack Sapp. We began our tenth year at Eldon High on August 31, 1953. Our class did its part this year to carry out the old saying, A sophomore is a wise fool. This year we went all out for activities; we had a pie supper, two skating parties, and another wiener roast. We lost some students this year. They were: Kathy Creech, Ronnie Morrison, Jack Glasgow, Robert McCord. Norma Berry Joined us. For our class officers we chose—President, Fritz Burns; Vice-President, Patty Stephenson; Secretary, Carol Wilkinson; Treasurer, Tommy Hemm; Reporter, Pam Dehm; Student Council Representative, Connie Christy; Sponsor, Jack Sapp. At last on August 31, 1954, we took our places as Juniors. We had dropped Norma Berry and Emelia Weeks, and gained Larry Howe, Russell McDaniel, Charles McDaniel, and Sylvanis Weeks. This was the year for our important activities. Our first Job, of course, was to elect class officers. They were: President, Carol Brown; Vice-President, Tommy Hemm; Treas- urer, Fritz Burns; Secretary, Carol Wilkinson; Reporter, Shirley Hart; Student Council Representative, Carol Brown; Sales Manager, Freddie Fligg; Assistant Sales Manager, Patty Pittman; Credit Manager, James Fromi; Assistant Credit Manager, Doris Jackson; Purchasing Manager, Patty Stephenson; Sponsor, Mrs. Nutt. Next we had to get our concession stand under way. As our class can't stand to be idle, we had to squeeze in a chili supper before we began our class play. This wonder of wonders was a comedy titled Feudin' Over Yonder, which featured chewing tobacco, shotguns, and bare feet. Our last big production came at the end of the year. We recreated the Stork Club in our high school gym and held a banquet to honor the graduating class of '55. At last we have reached our goal; we are seniors! What could be a better way to start off such a momentous year than freshman initiation. Also in those first few weeks we elected our class officers. They were: President, Carol Brown; Vice- President, Tommy Hemm; Secretary, ; Treasurer, James Fromi; Student Council Representatives, Patty Stephenson and James Fromi; Reporter, Connie Christy; Sponser, R. L. Pollock. At the writing of this document complete facts concerning the last months of school are not known, but you can be sure we have plans. We are going to put out our annual and work on a class play and top it all off with a class trip. 15 By Yalanda Sumner ROW ONE: ROW TWO: ROW THREE: ROW FOUR: ROW FIVE: NOT SHOWN: JUNIORS Billy Albert, Billy Campbell, Kay Canny, Nancy Chance, James Cloke, Charles Cubbage, Etta Mae Fitzsimmons, Loren Fligg.
