Past Events of the Class of ’52 In the year of 1940- 41 the old school bell rang in the first year of school for the class of '52 with the following members: Delbert Allen, Richard Brown, Robert Chichester, Robert Cooley, Wayne Essary, Bill Hamilton, Tommy Hawker, Robert McCarty, Joe Norris, Jackie Peck, Fred Rook, James Scott, Shirley Bedford, Orville Sickels, Edith Bihain, Florence Bihain, Evelyn Canny, Mary Ann Cox, Betty Davis, Ina Lea Day, Dorothy Fitzgerald, Mairlyn Hart, Carol Hemm, Carolyn Morrow, Shirley Reisch, Ralph McElroy, Richard Bretz, Allen Morrison, Ronald Cloke, and Jack Quigley. Our teacher was Bertha Trumper. As time went on the year of 1941- 42 found the following students joining us from the Lincoln School: Arthur Carter, Wilbur Baker, Robert Cole, Edward Glotfelty, Harold McCoy, Wayne Stout, Shirley McCord, and Shirley Sanders. Other new students were Raymond Halsey, Jackie Peck, Donna Grimes, and Evelyn Roberts. Those missing from last year were Conley Scott and Lloyd Teeter. The year of 1942- 43 found the teacher, Virginia Rhodes, adding the following names to the roil: Marilyn Corder, Charles Bedford, Donald Bihain, Ronald Cloke, Jay Roy Meyers, and Larry Park. In 1942- 44 Patricia Hayden, our teacher, added to our class of '52, Lawrence Brown, James Brown, Janet Fuqua, Ruth Snooks, and Eugene Hines. Under the direction of Miss Shirley Herr in 1944- 45, the fifth grade welcomed Jimmy Goodwin, Mary Lou Utterback, and Ruth Thomas. Not being used to separate classrooms in the year 1945- 46, we excitedly entered Junior High with doubtful minds as how to act. Our teachers that year were Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Stilfield, and Mrs. Rasberry. Those who joined this year’s class were Harold Cobb, Paul Dabler, Floyd McIntosh, and Mary Alice Kendrick. In 1946- 47 we entered the seventh grade adding Donald Carr, Ronald Fuqua, Joan Terry, Lorena Mathews, Lois Stevenson, Nancy Moore, Ardith Pyle, and Agatha Hayden to our class. Shirley Reisch was the only one to leave our class during the year. Our teacher was Mrs. Stilfield. The year 1947- 48 found Shirley Granby, Bill Hancock, Roy Pearson, Donna McLeland, Joyce Phillips, Wayne Ploss, Charles Pickerell, Harry Holcomb, Mary Adamson, Betty Cloke, and Shirley Reisch as new students to our class. Our teacher that year was Miss Eileen Canady and our main feature for that year was eighth grade graduation. After graduating from the good old eighth grade, we shyly entered Senior High. Of course, our main worry was Freshman initiation. Those who came to join us in the excitement were Dorthy Jo Aeschliman, Allen Carter, Ethel Davis, Ralph Leasure, Harold Liles, Louise Osing, George Reisch, Patricia Sedore, Don Treece, Wilbur Fisher, James Johnson, and at last Joy Pilcher who came from Ottumwa to join us in the last six weeks of our Freshman year. Our class officers for that year were: President-Arthur Carter, (But Carol Hemm took over the job for him because he was one of those shy Freshman boys.) Vice-President-Floyd McIntosh, Secretary-Mary Ann Cox. Treasurer- Bill Hamilton. Our sponsor was Mr. Gardner. Our teachers were Mr. Ross, Miss Hunter, Mr. Henry, Mr. Gardner, Mrs. Place, Mr. Rusbult, and Mr. Bugos. This year of 1949-'50 rang in a class of brilliant and courageous Sophomores with one new face present and many old ones missing. Those leaving our class were Betty Cloke, Ethel Davis, Harry Holcomb, Shirley McCord, Jack Quigley, George Reisch, and Don Treece. Herman Coffin was the only new one for that year. Our class officers were: President-Carol Hemm, Vice-Presi- dent-James Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer-Mary Ann Cox, and Student Council Representative- Don Treece. Mr. Gardner was again our class sponsor. Our teachers for that year were Mr. Gardner, Mr. Evans, Miss Hunter, Mr. Rusbult, Mrs. Place, Mr. Christensen, and Miss Ross. Here we were, finally high school Juniors. After all these years we felt that we should know more than the teachers, but the teachers couldn't be convinced of a thing like that. We chose as our class officers: President-Carol Hemm, Vice-President-Ralph Leasure, Secretary-Mary Ann Cox, Treasurer-Bill Hamilton, and our Student Council Representative-Shirley Granby. Our class spon- sor was Mrs. Evans. Jimmy Johnson and Mildred Brown were the only persons who were transfer- red from this school during this year and Art Carter and Wayne Ploss left to join the Navy. Our class sponsor was Mrs. Evans. Of course, this was our most exciting year planning parties, work- ing up our class play, “Don't Take My Penny,' and best of all, the Junior-Senior banquet, which was decorated “Western ’ style. We hope the Seniors enjoyed the banquet as well as we enjoyed planning and decorating for it. August 30, 1951, we marched into the high school assembly to complete our last nine months of school. It made us feel good to sit in the Senior row, look over at the Freshmen and Sophomores and remember when we used to sit in those seats. Shirley Granby Renfrew moved to Ottumwa and is going to finish school there but plans to come back and graduate with her class. Mae Garrels, transferred from Packwood, joined our class at the beginning of the year. Veryl Edgerly joined our class in February. We chose as our class officers: President-Bill Hamilton, Vice-President- Harold Cobb, Secretary-Dorothy Fitzgerald, and Treasurer-Louise Osing. Our Student Council representative was Herman Coffin. Miss Hunter was chosen as our class sponsor. One of the main features of the year was the “Gay Nineties Revue’’. Our class motto is, “Tonight We Launch; Where Shall We Anchor?” Our flower is white carnation and our colors are maroon and white. At the time this class history is being written many of us are wondering what kind of future lies ahead of us. After twelve years of training most of us hope we are ready to begin making our own way. We plan to spend three days in May on our class trip, which will be an event that we shall all remember. May 22, 1952, will end our high school days and as we walk away with our diplomas we will have but one thought in mind, “Tonight We Launch; Where Shall We Anchor?” 19

Class Poem We, the class of 1952, Will now be found in “Who's Who As one of the more studious classes With, of course, nice lads and lasses. Long we've waited for tonight When we with faces shining bright, Will leave the halls of E. H. S. Where we have shared much happiness. We've played sports of all sorts, On many different courts, Whether a loss or a win, We always took it with a grin. After we leave we'll long remember Every helpful faculty member, Wrho, though busy as could be, Still spared time for you and me. Mr. Young and do-re-mi, Mr. South and biology, Mr. Wylie and typewriters clicking, While the clock was slowly ticking. Mr. Burns and chemistry, Mr. Christensen and geometry, Mrs. Shives and the world's making, While Mrs. Sutherlin taught baking. While Miss Hunter taught speaking, Mr. Allman was busy sweeping. Students in study hall were wailing, For some had great fear of failing. Four years of this we’ve had, Some good and some bad. A hearty good-bye and thanks to all, Who have shared our happiness in this hall. 18 Dorothy M. Fitzgerald
