We are having an anniversary because it is just thirty years since our graduation. As we were taking a tour through Eldon to find out how our classmates are making out, we first found as we were passing the local barber shop, our old classmate, Joe Norris. He must be doing pretty well because all the chairs were filled. We stopped into “Whitey's to get a coke. Our old buddy, Joy Pilcher is still working there. We never figured she would stay with that job this long. After we left “Whitey's we passed a newly organized beauty shop run by Carolyn Morrow. She is running “Toni Home Permanent out of business with her new “Dudie's Shadow of a Wave.' It really works wonders. Drop in sometime and she will give you one. Just as we were leaving Carolyn's Beauty Shop we saw Bill Hamilton working at his new job as the Head of the Street Cleaning Department. We were talking to some people and they told us about Lorena Mathew’s Reducing Salon. Lorena always did reduce, and now she has discovered a new method. We have among our old classmates a “big time operator . Bill Hancock struck oil on his farm outside of Eldon. He always said there was oil on that farm. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Pilcher have taken over the Eldon Forum Office. Mrs. Pilcher is the former Carol Hemm. Herman Coffin always said he was going to fix our old schoolhouse up. He is now getting the job done because he is president of the school board. We decided to drop by the schoolhouse and see if it had changed much since we had last attended it. Just as we stepped inside the door we saw.the janitors scrubbing the floor like mad. They were our old buddies, Harold Cobb and Floyd McIntosh. We stopped into the post office to get a stamp and mail a letter. The girl working in there sure looked familiar. Why sure, it's Agatha Hayden. We saw her assistant, Pat Sedore, in the back room. We passed the church and there was a big wedding going on inside. We decided to stand outside and see who the lucky people were. Why, who do you suppose it was? Nobody, but Louise Osing and Don Carr. We were talking to some more of our friends, who told us about the three girls who be- came engaged in the Senior Class. Dorothy Fitzgerald, Shirley Reisch, and Ina Lea Day, have now married and are very happy with their husbands and houses full of kids. We heard that Dorthy Jo Aeschliman is a coach for girls' basketball at Ottumwa High. Her teams are doing very well. The former, Mary Ann Cox, and her husband, Glenn Hughes, have become the managers of the U-Save store. The two married girls in the Senior Class are getting along just fine. Shirley Granby Renfrew, better known as Dusty, and her husband have bought a farm near Ottumwa. Mary Kendrick Carder and her husband have moved their family to Colorado. We decided to leave Eldon for awhile and see how our classmates, that have left Eldon, are making out. Wr e went down to the big city of Selma which has changed considerably. They have opened an opera theater and their leading lady is Ardith Pyle. She always said she was going to stay single and make singing her career. We then went to Ottumwa and to our surprise found where it used to be Morrell's Packing Co., it is now Liles and Leasure Meat Packing Corporation. Harold Liles and Ralph Leasure went in partnership and bought it. The boy who entered our school the last semester, Veryl Edgerly, has been courting our old chum, Mae Garrels. They seem to be getting along just fine, and we expect to be hearing wedding bells before long. We found our last two classmates, Joyce Phillips and Marilyn Hart, in New York City. They are now the managers of the Belmont Hotel. They are in the money now. Our 30th anniversary is now over, and since we found all our classmates getting along well for themselves, we decided to return home. 16 S Class Song £ enior year has ended now, Memories that will never die Fun and work did fill the days, Gaily spent at Eldon High. n veryday the Seniors toiled, To make their grades to pass. Books did fly and bells did ring, As we hurried off to class. J othing will stop our going far, Into a world of fame. When headlines flash you will stop and say, Why that’s a Senior’s name!” o n our hearts we will remember, Each day and night of fun. Prepared by those who cared for us, From dawn to setting sun. ie Id schooldays at Eldon High, Were happy ones you see. The memories we shall cherish, Wherever we might be. 5 vadiant eyes with nearing tears, Will be seen upon the stage. This dear chapter of our life has ended, So we will turn another page. enior year has ended now, So we will say good-bye. Our diplomas are our rewards, For these years at Eldon High. 17 Class Poem We, the class of 1952, Will now be found in “Who's Who As one of the more studious classes With, of course, nice lads and lasses. Long we've waited for tonight When we with faces shining bright, Will leave the halls of E. H. S. Where we have shared much happiness. We've played sports of all sorts, On many different courts, Whether a loss or a win, We always took it with a grin. After we leave we'll long remember Every helpful faculty member, Wrho, though busy as could be, Still spared time for you and me. Mr. Young and do-re-mi, Mr. South and biology, Mr. Wylie and typewriters clicking, While the clock was slowly ticking. Mr. Burns and chemistry, Mr. Christensen and geometry, Mrs. Shives and the world's making, While Mrs. Sutherlin taught baking. While Miss Hunter taught speaking, Mr. Allman was busy sweeping. Students in study hall were wailing, For some had great fear of failing. Four years of this we’ve had, Some good and some bad. A hearty good-bye and thanks to all, Who have shared our happiness in this hall. 18 Dorothy M. Fitzgerald Past Events of the Class of ’52 In the year of 1940- 41 the old school bell rang in the first year of school for the class of '52 with the following members: Delbert Allen, Richard Brown, Robert Chichester, Robert Cooley, Wayne Essary, Bill Hamilton, Tommy Hawker, Robert McCarty, Joe Norris, Jackie Peck, Fred Rook, James Scott, Shirley Bedford, Orville Sickels, Edith Bihain, Florence Bihain, Evelyn Canny, Mary Ann Cox, Betty Davis, Ina Lea Day, Dorothy Fitzgerald, Mairlyn Hart, Carol Hemm, Carolyn Morrow, Shirley Reisch, Ralph McElroy, Richard Bretz, Allen Morrison, Ronald Cloke, and Jack Quigley. Our teacher was Bertha Trumper. As time went on the year of 1941- 42 found the following students joining us from the Lincoln School: Arthur Carter, Wilbur Baker, Robert Cole, Edward Glotfelty, Harold McCoy, Wayne Stout, Shirley McCord, and Shirley Sanders. Other new students were Raymond Halsey, Jackie Peck, Donna Grimes, and Evelyn Roberts. Those missing from last year were Conley Scott and Lloyd Teeter. The year of 1942- 43 found the teacher, Virginia Rhodes, adding the following names to the roil: Marilyn Corder, Charles Bedford, Donald Bihain, Ronald Cloke, Jay Roy Meyers, and Larry Park. In 1942- 44 Patricia Hayden, our teacher, added to our class of '52, Lawrence Brown, James Brown, Janet Fuqua, Ruth Snooks, and Eugene Hines. Under the direction of Miss Shirley Herr in 1944- 45, the fifth grade welcomed Jimmy Goodwin, Mary Lou Utterback, and Ruth Thomas. Not being used to separate classrooms in the year 1945- 46, we excitedly entered Junior High with doubtful minds as how to act. Our teachers that year were Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Stilfield, and Mrs. Rasberry. Those who joined this year’s class were Harold Cobb, Paul Dabler, Floyd McIntosh, and Mary Alice Kendrick. In 1946- 47 we entered the seventh grade adding Donald Carr, Ronald Fuqua, Joan Terry, Lorena Mathews, Lois Stevenson, Nancy Moore, Ardith Pyle, and Agatha Hayden to our class. Shirley Reisch was the only one to leave our class during the year. Our teacher was Mrs. Stilfield. The year 1947- 48 found Shirley Granby, Bill Hancock, Roy Pearson, Donna McLeland, Joyce Phillips, Wayne Ploss, Charles Pickerell, Harry Holcomb, Mary Adamson, Betty Cloke, and Shirley Reisch as new students to our class. Our teacher that year was Miss Eileen Canady and our main feature for that year was eighth grade graduation. After graduating from the good old eighth grade, we shyly entered Senior High. Of course, our main worry was Freshman initiation. Those who came to join us in the excitement were Dorthy Jo Aeschliman, Allen Carter, Ethel Davis, Ralph Leasure, Harold Liles, Louise Osing, George Reisch, Patricia Sedore, Don Treece, Wilbur Fisher, James Johnson, and at last Joy Pilcher who came from Ottumwa to join us in the last six weeks of our Freshman year. Our class officers for that year were: President-Arthur Carter, (But Carol Hemm took over the job for him because he was one of those shy Freshman boys.) Vice-President-Floyd McIntosh, Secretary-Mary Ann Cox. Treasurer- Bill Hamilton. Our sponsor was Mr. Gardner. Our teachers were Mr. Ross, Miss Hunter, Mr. Henry, Mr. Gardner, Mrs. Place, Mr. Rusbult, and Mr. Bugos. This year of 1949-'50 rang in a class of brilliant and courageous Sophomores with one new face present and many old ones missing. Those leaving our class were Betty Cloke, Ethel Davis, Harry Holcomb, Shirley McCord, Jack Quigley, George Reisch, and Don Treece. Herman Coffin was the only new one for that year. Our class officers were: President-Carol Hemm, Vice-Presi- dent-James Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer-Mary Ann Cox, and Student Council Representative- Don Treece. Mr. Gardner was again our class sponsor. Our teachers for that year were Mr. Gardner, Mr. Evans, Miss Hunter, Mr. Rusbult, Mrs. Place, Mr. Christensen, and Miss Ross. Here we were, finally high school Juniors. After all these years we felt that we should know more than the teachers, but the teachers couldn't be convinced of a thing like that. We chose as our class officers: President-Carol Hemm, Vice-President-Ralph Leasure, Secretary-Mary Ann Cox, Treasurer-Bill Hamilton, and our Student Council Representative-Shirley Granby. Our class spon- sor was Mrs. Evans. Jimmy Johnson and Mildred Brown were the only persons who were transfer- red from this school during this year and Art Carter and Wayne Ploss left to join the Navy. Our class sponsor was Mrs. Evans. Of course, this was our most exciting year planning parties, work- ing up our class play, “Don't Take My Penny,' and best of all, the Junior-Senior banquet, which was decorated “Western ’ style. We hope the Seniors enjoyed the banquet as well as we enjoyed planning and decorating for it. August 30, 1951, we marched into the high school assembly to complete our last nine months of school. It made us feel good to sit in the Senior row, look over at the Freshmen and Sophomores and remember when we used to sit in those seats. Shirley Granby Renfrew moved to Ottumwa and is going to finish school there but plans to come back and graduate with her class. Mae Garrels, transferred from Packwood, joined our class at the beginning of the year. Veryl Edgerly joined our class in February. We chose as our class officers: President-Bill Hamilton, Vice-President- Harold Cobb, Secretary-Dorothy Fitzgerald, and Treasurer-Louise Osing. Our Student Council representative was Herman Coffin. Miss Hunter was chosen as our class sponsor. One of the main features of the year was the “Gay Nineties Revue’’. Our class motto is, “Tonight We Launch; Where Shall We Anchor?” Our flower is white carnation and our colors are maroon and white. At the time this class history is being written many of us are wondering what kind of future lies ahead of us. After twelve years of training most of us hope we are ready to begin making our own way. We plan to spend three days in May on our class trip, which will be an event that we shall all remember. May 22, 1952, will end our high school days and as we walk away with our diplomas we will have but one thought in mind, “Tonight We Launch; Where Shall We Anchor?” 19 Betty Albert Delbert Allen Shirley Bedford Joe Bowlin Joan Bushong Bob Boxx Viola Boyd Dick Carder Alice Carr Robert Cole Marilyn Corder Junior John Earhart Wallace Goodwin Junior Haifley Bob Hancock Junior Liles Janice McClure Allen Morrison Ardith Niece Gary Phillips Shirley Ploss Elaine Rupe Orville Sickles Linda Swaim Marsha Tynan Frank Ward Jack W ilkinson 21 Jack Beghtol Wilfred Boettcher Bob Burns Marvin Creech James Carhart Harold McCoy- Rose Mary McGregor Darrell McKittrick Ralph Saner Victor Sels Joan Staton Gary Thomas Barbara Thompson Dorothy Ehret Carol Sue Finney Roberta Hogue Freshman Don Niece Carolyn Northrup Ronnie Phillips Wilbur Pilcher Beverly Reisch Patty Rogers 23 Carol Ann Fritz Burns Billy Canaday Connie Christy Gary Cloke Sandra Deane Brown Pamela Dehm Donald Elkins Freddie Fligg Jack Glasgow Shirley Hart Tommy Hemm Eighth Qrade Carol Lewis Doris Jackson Joyce Major Margery Martin Ronnie Morrison Robert McCord Eugene Morrow Albert Myers Patty Jo Pittman Bill Rock Larry Sedore Patty Smith Anna Marie Patty Stephenson Reithel Sumner Yolanda Sumner Mary Ann Ward Carol Wilkinson Spilman 24 Billie Albert Beverly Bostwick Theresa Canny Frank Cloke Charles Cubbage Sharon Dugan Loren Fligg Seventh James Carrels Linda Hamilton Sally Hancock Richard Hemm Susan Isreal Sonja Jobe Robert Lane Martha Myers Diane Phillips Lila Pilcher Karen Pittman Marcia Potts Merle Sedore Norman Tweed 25 David Steele Sandra Teeters Helen Thomas V. ilson W ilburn Peggy Wilkinson Fred Allman David Baber Dewitt Bostwick Richard Boxx Dean Coffin Billie Elkins Donna Essary David Findlay Jimball Fligg Roger Fligg Lloyd McAllister Kathleen Norris Kenneth Pilcher Larry Crow Gloria Forbes Larry Major Vernon Roberts Ernie Sodler Otis Schafer Arthur Steele Belva Stephens Janice Stephenson Larry Streeby Darlene Sumner Patricia Sumner Fred Thomas George Wylie 26 Martha Baber David Benson Rose Brooks Robert Dehm Junior Essary Rachel Essary Patty Canny Elizabeth Findlay Patty Carr Larry Hemm Fifth Qrade Roddy Hogue Larry Jones Paul Lane i Norman Morton Asher Mullenix Janet Pittman Sharon Potts Warren Ragen Curtis Wolf 27 Barbara Cubbagc Carolyn Denny Bobby Drake Johnnie Dungan Dorothy Dur t Jimmy Durst Lois Essary Pat Essary Barbara Forbes Donna Galloway Ronnie Glasgow Judith Greenland Sharon Phillips Mary Ann Ragen Roberta Roberts Jerry Sapp Jerry Scott 28 n ' - h ifck . They had quite a few close games but not until the Sectional Tournament did they win their first game. They beat Pleasant Plain the first night of the tournament in an overtime by 2 points, with a final score of 34-36. The second game they played in the tourna- ment was another victory for our girls over Packwood with a score of 38-26. They lost against Batavia in the Consolation. The third game won by the Eldon sextette was with Eddyville which resulted from an overtime. The final score for that game was 24-20. Dorthy Jo Aeschliman and Marsha Tynan were outstanding guards. Bonnie Hemm and Joyce Phillips were high scorers for this year and Carol Hemm was chosen as Captain with Joyce Phillips as co-captain. The boys’ basketball team did very well this year by winning 14 out of 1 7 games and having a 5-3 record. The Pirate Five were overthrown by the Bullpups in the County Tournament. They had many close games, either in their or their opponents favor. Our boys about doubled the score on quite a few of the other teams. They beat Douds 56-20 and Packwood 50-26. The Eldon vs Farson game was an exciting game with the Pirates winning by 1 point, 33-32. The Agency boys beat our lads by 1 point when there, but, the return game was a good size victory for Eldon boys with final score of 57-39. Bill Hancock was chosen as captain of the squad this year. Boddy Glotfelty, Bill Hancock, and Deb Allen were outstanding hitters this season. Bob Cole, Norman Penrod, and Garry Phillips were outstanding on defense. In baseball the boys did very well, winning 5 out of 7 games. Losing one to Keosauqua in an eight inning with a point loss. The other one was lost to Douds also by one point. The biggest thrill for the baseball club was whitewashing Batavia 7-0. Batavia was previously undefeated until our local nine got ahold of them. The batting average for the baseball club was 450. The strike-outs for Morrison was 102 with an average of 14 a game. Morrison won 6 and lost 1 while McCoy lost one. The leading hitters were Cole, John Earhart, James Earhart, Jr. Liles, Ward, Hancock, Teeters. 36 Boys’ Baseball FRONT ROW: James Earhart, Norman Glasgow, Ralph Carter, Bob Cole, Norman Penrod, Frank Ward. The band was unusually busy last fall preparing for marching band contest and programs for basketball games. The band also took part in all pep assemblies and the pep band played at all basketball games. The organization is composed of members under the di- rection of William Young, who has just completed his first year at Eldon. The band also contains several small groups some of which are pictured on the next page. The girls and boys chorus have not been quite as active as the band but they have performed for P. T. A. and other organizations. One of the most outstanding programs of this year was the spring music program in which many of the contest groups and soloists appeared along with the band.
