Enthusiasm is a vague word. Zeal for or interest in a cause seems too dead, appears too much like a dictionary definition. Enthusiasm is better known by seeing it in action and best understood by studying its results. Elder High School tells us much about enthusiasm,f0r Elder is the product of enthusiastic Bishops, priests, and nuns. The idea for our school found conception in the mind of Archbishop Henry Moeller. Foreseeing the need for Cath- olic secondary education in the western hills, he named his ideal school after another Archbishop-Wiiliam Henry Elder, a saintly churchmen and a fine teacher. The interest of Archbishop John T. McNicholas gave to Elder a core of well-trained teachers. And today, Elder enjoys its ex- pansive facilities and varied and well-planned curriculum because of the enthusiastic support of our present Arch- i bishop, Karl J. Alter. The parishes that send their young men to Elder have had pastors deeply interested in our school. Their constant and loyal support, a result of enthusiasm for what Elder stands, is seen evident in the complete educational plant that is Elder today. Without devoted pastors, past and present, Elder would have been a lost idea of Archbishop Henry Moeller. And Elder has always shared the enthusiasm of the various congregations of Religious SisterSethose religious ladies that instructed at Elder in the beginnings of our schooVs history: and their modern counterparts who prepare the future young pupils of Elder. These teaching Sisters are among the most enthusiastic and loyal friends of Elder High School.
