Training youth for their future is the end and purpose of high school edu- cation. Whatever the interests and ambitions of its students, the high school should be ready and able to satisfy them and provide courses of study apt fm preparing them for their chosen work in life. The business course at Elder, including such studies as business administration, bookkeep- ing, typewriting and general busi- ness training, provides the business minded youth with certain funda- mentals of business procedure which aids him to take his part more easily in the business field after graduation. Through eXtra-curricular activities, the journalist 0f the future can be- come very familiar With the profession he wishes to pursue. Working on the staff of the school paper, tiThe Purple Quill and the yearbook the ttElder- zidof proves most advantageous in instructing him in the fundamentals of newspaper work and in increasing his enthusiasm and interest. English and history classes, too, provide him with the basic tools he needs to carry on the work of this chosen profession. Elder is proud of her graduates who are making their mark in the fourth estate. VVhen the deshe to be a doctor enters first the mind of the youth, is cthcult to say. Perhaps when studying the beauty of design in living organism pointed out and demonstrated in biology classes comes the first stirring of interest, the first half-formed resolution. Elder boasts of many, in its long list of graduates, who have successfully followed the medical profession. Their example and their success provides hope and inspiration to the undergraduates of today. 1' :1 ge 8 A. ' T be feed; of a Vocation During the more than tV-ventzy-five years Of catholic education at Elder. approximately eighty students have entered religious life. Although no one takes upon himself the duties and privileges of the religious vocation unless called by Almighty God, yet it. is a tribute to the good example and zealous work of the faculty that so many vocations have been nurtured and encouraged. Especially in the religion Classes, but in every other class as well, love of God and devotion to H is church on earth are taught by word and example. Daily prayers, frequent reception of the Sacraments, the exercises of the annual retreat. 2111 help to water the seed 01 vocation im- planted by God. QC'H'FNgf Mr. Robert Groneman tClass 19350 is a practicing lawyer in Cincinnati. The curricular and extra-curricular courses are designed to provide gen- eral training in all fields of human endeavor. Encouragement to study law after graduation is given in a regular program of public speaking followed in the English classes; in the frequent debates and informal discussions in other classes; and vari- ous extra-curricular clubs, especially in the activities of the Dramatic Club. Good lawyers are a blessing to any community, for the maintenance of peace between Citizens depends upon the honest interpretation of the law in any dispute. Elder salutes her sons who are engaged in this praiseworthy profession. Page 12 Special School Project: duruwmanm mu. It is not sufficient that: all citizens be taught their duties and Obligations towards their government whether federal, state 017 local. Inspiration must 21150 be provided in every school program that capable and qualified leaders may be directed to make a career of government service. The civics and history classes at Elder, us wcll as the guidance program carried out: extensively in many interesting projects and activities, lend the en- couragement and direction which students need to enter this vitally important. and highly regarded field. Sports of all kind hold a very im- portant place in the program at any school. Not only do they help develoP strong bodies, but also they aid very much in develoPing strong characters. The sports program at Elder has not only been successful over the years because of fine teams which have been produced, but especially because of the distinguished gentlemen Who have manned those teams. Many of our athletes have gOne forth from Elder to continue exercising their special skills in national competition. These men have carried the name of Elder on to fields of sports of many of the finest universities in the country as Well as professional organizations. Sports have been for many of these graduates a means of livelihood, but especially they have been a means of bringing the principles of good Sports- manship, integrity and honor to those of the younger generation. WILLIAM SCHMITT Principal of Elder 1922-1929 l'agc IS We, the Graduating Class of 1952, and the Student Body at Elder High School, give tribute to the late Right Reverend Monsignor G. William Schmitt, who, on the tenth day of January 1952, left this world to receive the eternal reward pre- pared for him. After serving as Superintendent of Schools from 1917 to 1922, Monsignor Schmitt was appointed the first Principal of Elder High Schciol, which post he held until 1929. In 1929 he was appointed Pastor of St. Aloy- sius Gonzaga Parish, where he served as Pastor until Our Eternal Father called him from his life,s work. We hope that this tribute to our beloved friend, the late Monsignor Schmitt, will make us, his loyal friends, realize the goals for which he was striving, and which will become for us a light in the distance, en- couraging us to expend our efforts to carry out the ideals promoted by this priest who dedicated his life for our salvation. The animal tournament, con- ducted under the auspices of the Ohio High School Athletic Asisociation, establishes the cham- pionship of the State of Ohio. The crack Elder team demonstrated its ability by winning the District and Regional Champion- ships played at Crosley Field and the State Finals played on the Varsity Baseball diamond at Ohio State in Columbus. Unquestionably this was one of the finest high school baseball teams ever assembled. It coni- bined a tremendous pitching staff with steady fieldng and clutch hitting. The trio of senior hurlers was outstanding. Earl Buck Hem- berger, Ron Brickner and Tom Flanagan all at one time or another demonstrated terrific ability under pressure Flanagan pitched a no hit game; Brickner, who never lost a tournament game, was the big name in the great triumph over Roger Bacon; Hemberger, hurled the great vie tory over Mhestem Hills and the final games over Cleveland East and Galion. Grainger beats out hit. Pre-game prayer. The infield, Composed of Don Ashcruft at third, jim Caruso at short, Tom Shillcr at second, and R011 Brickticr and jerry Kenkel at first played sparkling defensive bail 2111 season. Clutch hit- ting was the particular forte 0L Caruso and Ashcrai't. The outfield made up of left fielder, Bill Dooley, center fielder, Tom Graingcr and right fielder, Dick V'Veletge and Earl Hcmherger could do it all: hit, run and field. The great hurling 0f the pitching staff was fully handled by Gordon Mam: who did a fine job 0i receiving while hitting a .300 plus average. This fine team was touched by Mr. George Lemmcl who is to be congratulated for bringing- his first baseball team through to the State Title. Disfrici Semi-Finuls - - Elder. A .3 Wes+ Hi ............
