Duties of good citizenship are studied and discussed at length in Civics Class. Prayer draws down Divine help on students seeking perfection. These meetings are sponsored by the John Shillito Company, and broadcast over a local radio station. The sports, program teaches fair play and the respect for the rights of others. . fig x .3; AZ... . ., . x :94 g 4n . ING POINT OF A GOOD CITIZEN . . . is his recognition of the basic princi- ple ahsdulcly essential in :my society h authority. Good citizens of the community or state are made, not born. Firm principles of authority; law. and proper respect for the rights of others are continually infused into the minds of 2111 Catholic students, through our parochial school system. Just as the mayor heads the goverw 7 ment of Our city, here at Elder. Rev. g! h 'h H Urban I.St:111g. our principal. is the chin authority. He secs to it that. the rules and regulations of the school are properly executed and obeyed. The student. respecting this authority, trains his will and thus becomes 21 worthy citizen. MAYOR ALBERT D. CASH, Beloved Mayor of Cincinnati The Principal, like the Mayor, is the administrator and director of the school community. Friendly relations exist be- tween students and faculty. . Faculty meetings are held regu- . larly to discuss school problems. HIS FAITH AND HIS DEVOTION . . . Cincinnati Council in action. to religious duties is the primary aim of the entire curriculum at Elder through its religious course. It is this religion course, Which is the integrat- ing principle making Elder a paro- chial school and not 21 public school. Its purpose is to acquaint the student more intimately With religion and to encourage greater devotion to it. Since religious principles are the foundation of Civic virtues, the stu- dent in acquiring the former, neces- sarily becomes imbued with the latter. Right ruling of society is built 011 authority and laws which are them- selves derived from the natural moral law. In the Catholic school the stu- dent not only learns to obey authority but also to appreciate the funda- mental natural moral law. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is a constant source of grace and devotion. . . . AND THE HELP OF THOSE WHO GUIDE HIM . . . is an everpresent factor which serves to give the student a proper under- standing of, and a right attitude to- ward, law and the enforcement there- of. This help is furnished by the Elder faculty which serves as the authority of the school and sets into operation the principles of living, through various regulations. It de- monstrates t0 the student. the practi- cal necessity of rules in school life. Specific members judge Violations and levy penalties accordingly, not with the intention of making life un- pleasant, but to secure greater happi- ness to the greater number. The stu- dent thus trained, will know how to take his place under similar condi- tions in community life. Vigilantes and Police aid, direct, and keep order. MONSIGNOR RYAN, Superintendent of Arch- diocesan schools, directs overall school policy. Robert Doll, Elder Senior, chosen Mayor for a Day, sat with Mayor Cash through a session of the regular Cincinnati Council Meeting. Through this well-planned program students of the Cincinnati area are made conscious of the obligations and duties of government. ugh? -k h z i x AND WITH THIS BACKGROU INDIVIDUAL THERE IS F GOVERNMENT THRO With a firm foundation of re- ligion, natural moral law, and respect for authority ingrained in him, the Elder student may confi- dently take his place as a worthy citizen. Since he is able to under- stand the reason and necessity be- hind law and authority, he will be able to participate more intelli- gently in the government of the community, state, and country . . . And with this background of the individual, there is formed good government through Catho- lic schools. +THE MOST REVEREND KARL J. ALTER Archbishop of Cincinnati Me if QRETM WHEN EJ'RCEI'ME f DICATION We, the students of Elder High School, dedicate the 1951 Elderado to his Excellency, The Most Reverend i Karl J. Alter, ArchbishOp of Cincin- nati, who during the past year suc- ceeded the Most Reverend john T. McNicholas as fifth Archbishop of Cincinnati. As our new spiritual leader we pledge him our loyalty, obedience and love; so that, following his leader- ship, we may progress toward new knowledge of temporal and spiritual values which will light our path through life, and bring us to our eternal reward. The Elder Panthers ended their 195061 season with a loss to Roger Bacon in the second round of tournament play. Al. though the record books would have you believe that the Panthers had a mediocre year, this istft at all true. At times, the Elder Crew looked as good as any other team in the league. - This can be backed up by impressive victoriES over the Public League Champs, Western Hills, and over powerful Purcell. Una fortunately, however, the Panthers couldlft seem to keep up this pace and lost to some comparatively weaker teams as well as to State leaders like Hamilton Public, Portsmouth Public and Roger Bacon The team had no milstamling players this year, as all of lhem had their good games as some time during the season.
