He now has been thrust suddenly into those responsibilities of men for which he has been preparing during that period by the example, lessons, and guidance of his teachers. He may, in that world, forget much he has studied and learned but he can never forget the work, fun, and activities of his generationls term at Elder. The single thing, at Elder, that sums up all his Spirit and memories is his beloved school song, llElder High, Our Alma Mater? They hold monthly 1116etings to discuss ques- tions 01: interest concerning relations between the faculty and sLudans. This promotes Student participation in school administration and should eventually lead to the practice OI: good citizenship. Each year every class elects its own representative to the Council and under the direction of Father I Krusling. the moderator. the rep- resentatives elect the officers of the Council. Koverman gathered one day to lay plans for the fortytnine annual.- These plans were laid under a cloud of doubt for no one was even sure there was going to be an Annual; thankst though to F1: Maher, the financial wizard, the go-aheadh sign was given. Putniek became moderator in September, 1946, succeeding Fr. W ilfred Dirr the clubs former moderator. Through Fr. Dirris efforts the club be- came, in 1943, a member of the National Thespian Society, and to date has fifty-nine enrolled Thespians ilicluding ten Gold Star Thespians. This year there has been 2111 addition to the di- recting staff, Fr. Julian Krushng. Fr. Kruslingr has been in charge of the scenery department with con- trol Over all scenery and its construction. The game pitted the Hornets 01' Central Vocational against the Panthers of Elder. The first quarter was about six minutes old when Jim Trel'zger faded back and threw a twenty yard pass to Ted Fry who scampcred the remaining 30 yards for a WDD. 1n the second period Elder started an eighty yard march which was climaxed by a lwenty-Eivc yard pass from jim Trel'zger t0 Norm BeaLty good for a touchdown. The third quarLer saw Central finish a I'orty-f'ive yard march with Jotham plunging over for a touchdown from the two yard line Rodgers place kicked the extra poinL. The first quarter W115 all Xavief with Carter going over from the eight for the first, tally, J'oiimving a steady drive from the Elder forty-l'ive. Halter made the conversion. A short time later Xavier intercepted one 013 'lirei'zger's passes 011 the Elder 20 and ran to the 10. 011 the third down Thorp ran left end for 10 yards and 21 touchdown. Haner's mmiersinn was no good, 111:1k1ng the score 13-0. The second period proved to be a ptlnter's duel with all the action taking place in mid- field. With the third quarter in progress it was seen that Elder was Completely revived. After downing 21 punt on their own 37, the Elder team started to roll. Run; by Bob Fry, B. Horan, and passes by Jim Treizger, the ball was moved to the Xavier Live yard line. On the next play Bob Fry carried for a T. D. 111 the l'otlrth quarter the Panthers started :1 drive but were stopped on the Xavier 20. Starting another drive from their Own -'11, the Elder team 111m'ed steadily down the field. I948 ELDER 24--COVINGTON HOLMES 7 On the night of October 1 the Elder Panthers traveled to Covington for their first game away from home. Early 111 the first quarter Norm Beatty partially blocked a Covington punt and Elder recovered on the Covingmn 41. On the next play Jim Treizger tossed 21 pass to Bob Fry who ran the remaining few yards for Elder's iirst tally. 'I'he kick was no good. Later in this period Elder took over on their own 46. 'l'retzger again faded and threw at 40 yard Pass to Bob Fry who seeunperetl over for another '1'. D1 ilirel'nger's kick was again not good. The snore then was Elder l2, Coving- ton 0. The second period netted Covinglon a score by way 01' a pass to the 6 yard line. Mul- doon then skirted left end and went over for 21 touchdown. The final score stood Elder 24; Covington 7. October 8' I948 ELDER 20- HAMILTON 4i . The night of October 8 pitted the Big Blue at Hamilton Public against our Panthers at Elder Stadium. Shortly after the opening kickolil? Hamilton climaxed a 60 yard march with Bailey plunging over from the 1 yard marker. Elder came right back following the kickoff and scored on a pass from jim 'I'ret'z- ger to Bob Fry. Treizgeris drop kick was good. On the first play after the kickoff Bailey raced 98 yards for another Hamilton T. D. A few minutes later Gordon of Hamilton, caught a punt and raced 40 yards for another T. D. The second quarter was a punting duel between Bah Fry 0t Elder andtWilks of Hamil- ton. An Elder drive was stopped on the 4 yard line as the half ended. In the third quarter Hamilton scored two more T. D's. One came by way of a 65 yard run by Bailey and the other by way of a 65 yard punt returned by Gordon. The fourth quarter found Elder on the Hamilton 8 yard line following a 50 yard march, From this point. Trefzger passed to Bob Stevens for a T. D. Trefzger's dropkick was no good, Seconds later Bailey returned the kick off 90 yards and another score. After blocking a punt, runs by Fry and Horan carried the ball to the 1 yard line from which 'l refzger went over On a quarterback sneak. At this time Kelly re-entered the game and ran a quarterback sneak around right end. Sumser converted six out of seven times ior Hamilton. The final score Elder 20 Hamilton 41. Ociober I5. I948 ELDER 46- HUGHES 7 On lhe evening of October 15, the Big Reds of Hughes journeyed across town to be the guests of the Elder eleven. This game turned out to be the easiest game of the entire season for Elder. Early In the first quarter AI VVeiner took a handoff and scampered 58 yards for a touch- down The conversion was good. Minutes later Weiner scored again from the 6 yard line after Bob Fry had caught a pass, but was pulled down at that point. The try for extra point faiIed. In the second period Bob Stevens ran a spectacular 59 yard touchdown run. Trefzgeris conversion was good. In the second half Elder continued to massacre the Hughes eleven. Bill Horan scored following an 85 yard march. The Elder reserves were put in at this point and they continued to roll up points until the final score stood at Elder 46, Hughes 7. October 24. I?48 ELDER b-eROGER BACON I9 The first Greater Cincinnati High School League Game of the year was played at Xavier Stadium on October 24. The Spartans from St. Bernard played host to our Panthers in this tilt. The first quarter was a punting contest until Bacon recovered a tumble on the Elder 40 yard line. A series of passes and runs carried the ball to the Elder 1 yard line from which B. Judy plowed over. Hauseris place ment was wide. A few minutes after the second quarter opened Stevens faded and threw a pass to Hoelscher who dodged his opponents and ran 30 more yards to a T. D. Hauseris kick was good. Elder was stopped on the Bacon six yard line as the quarter ended. In the third period Elder again threatened but fumbled at the goal line. Later in the period Eider started a 35 yard march that eventually gave the Panthers a touchdown. Runs by Kelly, Fry, and Horan moved the ball to the seven yard stripe from which Bill Horan went over. In the final period Elder fumbled on her own 22 and Bacon recovered. Stevens went to the five yard line on a quarterback sneak. From this point Hoelscher carried over. The conversion was no good. The final score Elder 6 -Roger Bacon 19. VARSITY FOOTBALL 1948 November 7. I948 ELDER 2I eST. XAVIER l4 The Elder eleven met the St. X Bombers on November 7, in the second game of the G, C. H. L. doubleheader. The first two quarters were played on even terms, with each team scoring 7 points. EIdefs tally came after several exchanges of punts in the second quarter. A pasa play from I Tlefzger to T. Fry covered 80 yards, and Elder scored. The conveision was good A few minutes later B. Reuther intercepted an Elder pass and galloped 60 yards for a Bomber touchdown. A pass for the conversion was good. Again in the third period Elder scored. Recovering a fumble on the HXH 35, Elder drove to pay dirt in five plays. A pass and runs by Fry and Horan netted the required distance. Again TrefzgerIS dropkick was good for the point. X made no serious threat in the remaining time. Opening the fourth quarter, IIX came right back and scored on a pass from T. Hart to I. B1ady. For the conversion they again pulled a fake kick and passed into the end zone to knot the score at 14 to 141. Then, Elder clinched the game mid-way through the final quarter. Mr. Stevenson was in charge of the program this year, and handled such details as keeping records of scores, arrange- ment of schedules, and assigning of officials. Every Home-room class in the school took part in the league. Each class played about once a week, following a definite schedule. The league was divided into two groups: the Freshmen and Sephomores comprising one group and the Juniors and Sen- iors the other. Not only did this program offer physical recreation to the fellows, but also taught good American sportsmanship. This year, an elimination series was held in the Spring to deter- mine the champion class of the school. In this series, each class was considered as the potential champion until it had been de- feated. One defeat eliminated a class from the competition. The undefeated class of the Freshmen- Sophomore group played the un- defeated class of the Junior-Senior group, and the winner of this playoff game was crowned the champion of the school.
