Elder High School was the name be- stowect on the new institution in honor of Bishop Elder. Established primarily for students from St. Lawrence. Elder nevertheless soon began to attract students tram the nearby parishes. Then, a short time later girls also were admitted and the old school building became inadequate. Elder High School moved to a new building on Laclecte Avenue. Within a few years the Elder High School Asso- ciation was formed by the eleven pastors of the churches in Price Hilt anct the western district for the purpose of pro- viding a Catholic High School able to accommoctate all the parishes of the Western Hills. From this resulted the present day EHer High Schooi. erectect in 1923. 111 1927 Elder became a boys, high school again anct the girls were sent to Seton High School. From this time to the present day the faculty at Etcter has consistecl of secular priests assisted by a quota of laymen. HERE . . . . . . . . . To this organization, as we as to the tacutty, the student hocty, hoth past and present. owes a huge debt. The Eider High School Association is composed ot the pastors and other representatives ot the Elder district. The ex- ecutive board 0t this Association meets once a month. A general meeting is hetct every six months. The many improvements which have recently been made around the school were made possihte hy the Association. They are responsihte tor the erection of our two new huitdings the cafeteria and the temporary ctassroom huitcting and atsa the tennis court, the new drive the Puhtic Address system and the new tights in the school. HOUR OFFICEH Miss Kolcle, our Secretary says: Students who attend a high school have the right to ex pect that their records be properly kept so that when the need arises, they can refer to the office For their records. This pertains not only to the students who have graduated but to all who have attended school, hf only for a short time. Moreover, these records should be kept in perfect condition so that the students actually in attendance can make inquiry about various things and be informed. without much deiay, on their actuaf standing in the school. It is very important, in fact a necessity, that records and files be kept, not in a haphazard way but in a systematic way so that those in charge can secure a perfect picture or any individual. The students of Elder have been fortunate in having hMil all these years lo keep their records COMPLETE, ACCURATE and PRECISE. MISS MILDRED KOLDE OFFICE OF SECRETARY-REGISTRAR MISS MILDRED KOLDE AND RAYMOND SCHAEFER u..-.mu;.;..-..... A . A . A BOY AND A PRIEST If I, RELIGION DEPARTMENT The most important part ol any education is the molcl- ing of character. In our four years at Elder this is done in our Religion classes. Thg knowledge of moral ancl religious principles here acquired will give us a sound religious background, and will enable us to carry Catholic faith and morals into our claily lives. AS we enter the outside world, we will be confronted by those whose standards of morality and ethics are not Christian. Under these circumstances lwe will need our religious training received at Elder to continue leading upright lives. REV. HENRY L AUSDENMOORE, A.B Religion REV ROBERT A. MAHER A3 B. 5:. Ed. Elaborate instruc; tions in grammar and its components are stressed the First two years. However, in the junior and senior years considerable time is spent in developing the cultural and literary viewpoints of English. Compounded into a group these subjects offer every Elder student a well rounded COUFSE. REV, JOSEPH L, ZIMMER, REVV WILLIAM J. BLOME, REV. BERNARD J. FELIX, A.8. A.B., B. Sc. Ed. A.I., B. 5:. Ed. The work ot the science teacher in high school is very important to those students who intend to continue their scientific studies in college. It is in high school that the foundation is laid and the basic principles are learned. Here at Elder. despite the lack of equipment, our science teachers have done a commendable joh instilling in the stu- dents a thorough knowledge of the tunctamentats 0f the sciences. The department of mathematics is an important factor in the educa- tion of the students of Elder. Its tour-year course aims to teach the student the science of pure mathematics. This branch is restrictect to the abstract science which by tile deductive system examines the conclusions neces sarily involved in the idea of numerical and spatial relations. This course, which includes algebra, geometry and trigonometry, gives to the student the untierlying principles in the engineering anct scientific Fields. The two go hand in hand. Elder has always been well repre- sented in the former Field and is corresponctingly successful in the latter. Just as an athletic letter goes With the athlete so the honor letter goes with the stuctent. One is as important to the former as the other is to the latter. The requirements for an honor letter are as ditticutt as those for an athletic letter. For eight consecutive periocls the student must maintain a general average of 85 with no mark lower than 80. Conduct and effort must he at least 85. At the end of each year Honor Letters are awarded. The goat 0f the Honor Students is to he an Honor Student for four years. No extra award goes with this but it has the prestige value of an Oscar. It is a good and a difficult goal for students to aim at. . .- ufx - h u thnnmt-L-Juume A. SENIOR SNAPS I. 2. The Dramatic Club of. 1946-47 had the largest membership tor many years. Father Robert Putnich acted as director and moderator for his second year. The resutts were: Eugene Hem- mer, president; Richard Vale. treasurer, and John Busse. secretary. The First halt year the freshman and upperclassmen had separate classes; while the freshmen were introduced to the secrets of the stage, the upper- ciassmen prepared and presented a oneuact tragedy, The Scoop Re- 'porter, to the Elder Welfare Association. For the First time in tour years the Elder Dramatic Club collaborated with the Seton Players in presenting two plays. The first was a Christ- mas drama, tiHon Night, and the second, a comedy hasect 0n the we - imown hook. uOur Hearts Were Young and Gay. In the last halt year a large number of students trom the sophomore class were added to the Club. Many of the other members were made eligible tor the Thespian Society through their work in previous plays. Finally the annual play with the Masque anti Gavel Association of Mother of Mercy High School was presented in tour hitarious perform- ances. This play was uStrictly Formal. The Vigilantes are a group of volunteer seniors who have relin- quished their daily study period to preserve order in the school wherever they were asked to do so, Each Vigilante is given a specific job which he lakes seriously and carries out with full responsibility. The Vigilante's real test comes each day when the fourth period, lunch hour, arrives. The onrushing mob, especially the hungry freshmen and sophomores, have to be halted and made to proceed in orderly fashion. They see their duty and do it. Credit is always given where it is due. The Vigilantes should be given every word of congratulation and praise that can be bestowed upon them. Foiiowing a week of this practice pads were disw tributed anci the real tight for a position on the squad began. The scrim- mages, although not long, were fast and furious. As the result. these work- outs completed, a squad of thirty-three was picked to represent Elder 0n the gridiron. Prospects for the season were bright due to the return of several teiiows who had size and experience. The squad promised to he very big and fairly fast with quite a bit of nioothaii savyf' in fact it was the concensus of opinion that the team was to he the most successful in the history of the schooii The first two games were played out of town. inciianapolis Cathev drai ieii beiore the Panthers 26-6 and a deadlock of 6-6 was fought with Hamilton Public. Three more consecutive Victories were addeci including FOOTBALL the sloppy game with Withrow, the steaming 26-0 defeat of Roger Bacon and the costly win over Hughes. The latter game, along with the following week of practice. placed several to'p-notch players on the injured list. Elder suffering from injuries, dropped the next two games to our arch rivals St. Xavier and Purcell. lhe Panthers bounced back into the winning at the expense of St. Xavier. Louisville. Thanksgiving saw no joy at the Elder Stadium. The game was lost to our neighbor, Western Hills. The season's record was not the best gained by our Elder team but it is remarkable how well the squad played under the handicaps suffered at mid-season. All the teuows.
