When we, the Class of 1989, began our journey through the halls of Elba High School, we were young and impressionable children needing care and guidance. Each year brought new peo- ple and experiences to mold us into the individuals that we are today. We are eter- nally grateful to those who have helped build us into the people that we have become. HHHI ■M ■■ ■Hi Just Our Style Although Rules Are For Our Own Good, Some Of Us Just Can’t Seem To Avoid The Temptation. 13 14 HOMECOMING 1988 October 7, 1988, was a day full of spirit and excitement for the students of Elba High School. Spirits had been building all week long in preparation for the Homecoming Day festivities. On Friday the students of EHS were proud to present their Homecoming Queen 1988, Miss Melissa Johnson and her court at the Coronation that afternoon. Melissa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Johnson. She was escorted by Brett Bryan. Melissa was attended by Kim McBride, escorted by Jeff Kelly; Stacy Ward, escorted by Barry Bryan-, Quiss Jones, escorted by Willie Flowers; Susan Johnson, escorted by Jamie Bass; and Julie Bowers, escorted by Eric Simmons. _________________________________________________'U v The Homecoming parade is an EHS tradition that the entire town seems to enjoy. The students and community worked diligently all week to prepare a float that showed their school spirit. The parade also consisted of entries representing clubs from the high school. Many beauty pageant winners added a little color, as well as pretty smiling faces to the parade route. J5 ELBA TIGER MARCHING BAND The 1988-89 Marching Tiger Band started the sea- son off with many hours of hard work after school and in the late summer. This hard work paid off when they received superior ratings at the North- west Florida Band Classic at Ft. Walton. Florida. The Marching Tiger Band also competed in the Southland Band Classic in Enterprise. This was an unusual con- test. in which the band received Best in Class, as did the colorguard and drum major in the preliminaries. These ratings allowed the band to compete in the finals of the Silver Division, where they also won first place. The Marching Tigers ended the season with their annual band dance, the theme being The Night We Fell in Love. The band also went to the Fun and Sun Festival in Clearwater. Florida. They competed in parade, concert, and jazz band compe- titions. 37 r The Marching Tiger drum major, major- ettes. and colorguard provided beautiful en- tertainment for the fans this season. Drum Major Christy Smith exercised excellent leadership throughout the year. The major- ettes and colorguard sparkled the field with their fine performances. On April 9. 1988. this dream came true for Miss Whitney Wise when she was chosen to reign as the 1988-89 Miss Elba. Whitney was crowned after receiving the Judge’s Interview and Impromptu Response awards. Miss Jeannie Clark was named first runner- up after winning the Verbal Communications award and Miss Melissa Johnson was named second runner-up after winning the Poise and Appearance award. Other category winners included Lucinda Byrd for Written Communication and Tammy Williams for Miss Congeniality. Miss Whitney Wise represented Elba in the National Peanut Festival on October 30-23. 1988. She competed with thirty-nine young la- dies and received the honor of second runner- up. The two-time state champion Bears came down to the Foggy Bottom to strut their stuff, but the eager Tigers con- trolled the game from beginning to end. TOP LIFT — Henderton evade Bear defender. The Tigers traveled to Louisville in search of their first area win. The Red Devils fought with all their might, but the Mighty Tigers left Louisville to pick up the pieces. Elba traveled to Luverne to play its sec- ond area game. The always tough Luverne Tigers played hard, but they just weren’t tough enough. Elba raised its record to 3 and 0 with 3 shutouts.
