What an exciting week October 22- 26 was for the Elba High School student body! Each day offered students special activities to show school spirit and pride. Homecoming festivities accelerated Thursday night with the traditional bonfire staged by the varsity cheer- leaders. Afterwards the enthusiastic throng joined in - Elba’s first street jam, an enjoyable experience which involved everyone. At 1:30 Friday afternoon the Elba City Schools assem- bled in Leroy Miller Memorial Stadium for the corona- tion of the queen and her court consisting of: Michele Cole, senior attendant; Shellye Amison, junior atten- dant; Stephanie Crittenden, sophomore attendant; Tab Bryan, freshman attendant; Christina Carpenter, black attendant; and the 1984 Homecoming Queen Amy Ellis, who was crowned by the senior class president, Michael Maddox. Next, the varsity cheerleaders led the eager crowd in the traditional pep rally. The traditional homecoming parade began at 4:00. The class of 1954 was honored as well as the queen and her court. This year’s parade had many lovely attrac- tions. Friday evening's activities began at 7:00 with the pre- sentation of the queen and her court amid field. At 7:30 the Elba Tigers came roaring onto the field anticipating another victory; and true to their season’s record, the Tigers defeated the Andalusia Bulldogs 42-21. The Homecoming dance concluded the week-long events. Thus, Homecoming 1984 faded into a treasured memory. CAMPUS BEAUTY JENNIFER FARRIS On the evening of December 6, 1984, thirty-six lovely young ladies graced the stage with their poise and beauty as they vied for the title of Cam- pus Beauty and Miss Bronze. An array of beauty captured the eyes of the audience as each partici- pant was presented in formal attire. The evening was highlighted by a production number per- formed by the “girls.” The coveted award of Miss Congeniality was presented to Annette Scharstein. The evening reached its climax when the runners-up and win- ners were named. The Elbala staff takes pride in presenting Miss Jennifer Farris, the 1984 Campus Beauty. THE 1984 MARCHING TIGERS The Elba Tiger Marching Band is basically a group of excellent students who share a love of music and enjoy working together. These students strive for discipline and perfection in all aspects of band life. Nothing daunts this tireless collection of young mu- sicians — not the torn and muddy field at a rainy football game nor the early morning practices of the Saturday contests. The qualities these exceptional people develop — pride, discipline, self-esteem, and confidence — remain as memories of the good and bad times in the band. These qualities become a cloak for better living as the present fades into the past. BAND DIRECTOR STEVE THOMPSON —_ ke —_——— 5 oe «| Se BAND COUNCIL ROW ONE: Ceina Hayes, President. ROW FOUR: Robin Lawrence, Senior Representative; Beth Henderson, Freshman Representative; Mandy Ham, Eighth Grade Representative. The Marching Tigers of 1984 began the year with an energetic crop of approximately forty young rook- ies under the untried leadership of the senior band members and the Band Council. In support of a spir- ited footbal l team, the band traveled to eleven ball- games to lead the fans in the “Fight Song” and per- form a variety of half-time shows. The inexperienced band proved its worth at the Atlanta Invitational Marching Band Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, when it brought home overall superior ratings and many sec- tional awards. Following an exuberant but exhaust- ing Homecoming Week, the Marching Tigers earned straight superior ratings at the Southland Band Clas- sic in Enterprise, Alabama, to show again that “prac- tice makes perfect.” The band closed the year in style with the annual Band Dance, making memories to the theme “The Roaring Twenties.” MAJORETTES YCOLOR GUARD AND DRUM MAJOR Left to Right: Stacy Galimore, Tab Bryan, Michelle Free, Alisa Parrish, Ann Barnes, Shannon Elliot, Anette Scharstein, Sherry Kelley, Dina Salter Colorguard Captain, Jennifer Farris, Amy Ellis, Jana Westbrook, Julie Sullivant, Dollie Stoudemire, Heidi Bese, Lori Clark, Susan Farmer. ABOVE: “DEFENSE!” CENTER RIGHT: Hudson fights for extra yardage. RIGHT: Scott cuts off block enroute to big gain. The Elba Tigers opened the 1984 season with an impressive shutout of the Charles Henderson Tro- jans. The offense exploded to score twenty-one points in the second half after getting off to a slow start. The defense played an outstanding game to shut down the Trojan offense and secure the Tigers’ first victory. Final score: Elba 28-Troy 0. LEFT: Scott eludes would-be Geneva tackler. CENTER LEFT: “Killer” stops Geneva QB cold. BELOW: Geneva tackler stops Osborn after long pass reception. BOTTOM LEFT: “Crunch!” Elba defense destroys Geneva runner. BOTTOM RIGHT: Sanders falls on the ball after blocking punt. Elba took the road for the second game of the season to play the ever-powerful Geneva Panthers. The Tigers took a commanding twenty-point lead early in the game only to see the Panthers score fourteen unanswered points to close the gap to seven. The stingy Elba defense rose to hold the Pan- thers and post another Tiger victory. Final score: Elba 20- Geneva 14. ABOVE: Petty sacks Luverne QB. TOP RIGHT: “Thumper” burns Luverne for a touchdown. RIGHT: McCollough puts move on Luverne back. BOTTOM LEFT: “Ox” drags two defenders for a good gain. BOTTOM RIGHT: “Killer” trips up Luverne back. The Elba Tigers claimed their third straight win when they were hosted by Luverne. Luverne’s offen- sive attack failed to score against the hard-hitting Elba defense while the Elba Tiger offense rolled up 35 points for a stunning blowout. TOP LEFT: John Osburn heads for paydirt. ABOVE: “The Ware Pair” converge on Opp runner. LEFT: “Ox” dives in for a TD. BOTTOM LEFT: Murdock causes key fumble on kickoff. BELOW: “Bull” carries fumble into endzone. After two weeks on the road, the proud Tigers came home to host the perennial power of the Opp Bobcats. The Tiger offense was unstoppable as Elba got the breaks and took advantage of them. Although the defense gave up one touch- down, it kept the Bobcats at bay all night and contributed twelve of the scoreboard points. Fifty points against Opp maybe unbelievable, but the Elba Tigers made themselves a place in history with the fantastic 50-6 victory over the Bobcats. RIGHT: “Skeeter” falls for extra yardage. BELOW: Hudson boots the winning points. CENTER RIGHT: Sanders and Phillips apply heavy rush on place kicker. BOTTOM LEFT: Osburn makes key reception. BOTTOM RIGHT: Hudson stopped after good gain. The confident Tigers journeyed to Pike County to take on the fired-up Brundidge Bulldogs. After play- ing “give away” in the first half, the Tigers used an awesome second half comeback to score 24 points and to claim a come-from-behind 33-24 win. This furious comeback upped the Tigers’ record to 5-0. - ve bin an 45%. k TOP LEFT: McCollough runs away from Ozark defenders. TOP RIGHT: Petty and “Killer” combine to stop Ozark runner. CENTER LEFT: Scott stopped after short gain. ABOVE: Just missed! LEFT: “Killer” breaks up pass. The Carroll High School Eagles came to the foggy bottom for the sixth game of the season to face the Elba Tigers. The Tigers went into the game as the underdogs, but they showed what they were made of as they took advantage of a fumble and a missed two-point conversion to claim a 14-13 victory over the 6A Eagles. ABOVE: Elba defense stops Troy runner for no gain. TOP RIGHT: “Duke” stops Trojan runner in his tracks. RIGHT: Williams applies heavy rush. BELOW: “Ox” rambles for big gain. BOTTOM RIGHT: “Skeeter” pulls away from Troy defenders. Elba, now 6-0, traveled to Troy to take on the Charles Henderson Trojans. The Trojans could still remember the first game of the season and were hop- ing to avenge that loss to the Tigers. However, Elba would have nothing to do with that as the Tigers again defeated Troy. Final 31-7. TOP LEFT: Michael Scott is pulled down after good gain. ABOVE: Raynard McKinnon stops Andy runner for no gain. LEFT: “Ox” Breaks loose. BOTTOM LEFT: Maddox cuts down Andy defender. BELOW: Scott turns on the speed. Homecoming 1984 brought the Andalusia Bulldogs to town looking to defeat Elba. The Tigers took the lead early but had to fight off a furious comeback attempt by Andalusia to post a 42-21 win. The Tigers remained undefeated with only one week left in the regular season. TOP LEFT: McCollough drags down Daleville back. TOP RIGHT: Bull drops Warhawk behind the line. ABOVE: Scott turns on the after burners. CENTER RIGHT: Sanders nearly blocks punt. RIGHT: “Be Ware” sacks Daleville QB. The top-ranked Tigers hosted the Daleville Warhawks in a rainstorm to end their regular season record at 9-0 for the year. The Elba defense held Daleville to 6 points while its own offense dominated the game and racked up 34 points to claim the first undefeated season in 30 years. LEFT: Stan Sauls makes shoe string tackle. CENTER LEFT: Hudson keeps on the option. BELOW: Magwood is stopped after nice gain. BOTTOM LEFT: Murdock enjoys another Tiger victory. BOTTOM RIGHT: “TOUCHDOWN!” The Elba Tigers opened the playoffs by hosting Abbeville in the first playoff game ever played in Elba. The Elba offense scored 29 points as the defense al- lowed Abbeville only s ix points and scored six of their own. The victory advanced the Tigers to the second round of the playoff victory. Final score: 35-6. ABOVE: “Killer” stops Brundidge back for short gain. TOP RIGHT: “Ox” breaks tackle on his way to a big gain. RIGHT: Brunson trips up Brundidge back. BELOW: Whoa! Sanders drags down Brundidge back from behind. BOTTOM RIGHT: Scott finds going tough. The undefeated Elba Tigers fell to the Pike County Bulldogs when they traveled to Brundidge for the second round of the 4A playoffs. The Bulldogs scored three quick touchdowns in the first quarter while the Tigers scored one in the second quarter. Neither team could manage any offense for the remainder of the game, and the Bulldogs put an end to the Tigers’ season. Although the hopes for a State Championship were ended, the 1984 season will nev- er be forgotten. As we looked back on what we were about to leave behind, we found many memorable times. It was here that many lasting friendships and special relationships were cemented. It was also here that we experienced the joy of success and happiness but learned to accept defeat and sorrow as well. Our experiences at Elba High School were the foundations for our lives ahead and the memory of those experiences is what we took with us as we departed from here and went our separate ways.
