A Day To Remember On October 21, 1983, Homecoming at Elba High was indeed a memorable event in the lives of the student body. Despite the hazy weather, the exhuberant spirits of the students exhibited tremendous enthu- siasm. The students eagerly awaited the fun and festivities of the approaching day. The day began with the traditional coro- nation of the lovely queen and her court. This year Elba High School was proud to announce as its Homecoming Queen, Miss Stephanie Smith. Stephanie was attended by Misses Kathy Coleman, Amy Ellis, Debbie Blair, Paula Adkins, and Tawana Nelson. Dowe Clark, senior class president, crowned the vivacious queen and her court. The parade, which meandered through the campus of each school and main streets of the city, featured many interesting class, club, athletic, and civic entries. Special rec- ognition was afforded to the queen and her court on a float prepared by the seniors and the Class of °53, which was honored during Homecoming ’83. The climax of the day came when the mighty Elba Tigers took on the Abbeville Yellowjackets in the most decisive game of the season. Proudly the Tigers walked away with another victory and a place in the state play-offs. A dance following the game concluded Homecoming of ’83 ... truly, a day to remember. w ee een aa —eee ys . ‘ 4 A Se id + = “ aly a 09- An e eM! pA ETE Uh a ae iii. tw ott . wet : PTT AY, WR ; h Vi NaN oy 130) PEN eRe Wivtirittreegee faye: 7S LYeuteeenad Piiidd CAMPUS BEAUTY And JUNIOR MISS Stephanie Smith On the evening of December 1, 1983, forty-five lovely young ladies from grades 10-12 competed for the titles of Campus Beauty and Miss Bronze. During week three of the season, the question was asked “Could the Elba de- fense be scored upon?” It happened early in the first half when the Luverne Tigers notched the first points of the year against Elba’s defense. It was to no avail as the mighty Tigers out lasted Luverne. FINAL SCORE: Elba 22 Luverne 6. BELOW: Dyess makes key reception at goal line. BOTTOM RIGHT: Hooks kicks an always helpful fieldgoal. TOP LEFT: McCollough runs for good yardage. TOP: Coach Wood talks over plan with Hooks. LEFT: “Skeeter” breaks away momentarily. Elba had now gained popularity by remaining un- defeated at 3-0. The tigers then traveled to the home of the area rival Opp Bobcats. Elba showed its team pride by promptly driving ninety-eight yards during their first possession of the ballgame. Opp’s only score came late in the first half on a questionable call by the referee. The Tigers rallied of to win. FINAL SCORE: Elba 21 — Opp 7 LEFT: Kelley and Ware provide good pass rush BELOW: Hooks shows form after third touchdown of the night. TOP: Scott breaks away from Greenville defenders for short gain. TOP RIGHT: McCollough hammered Greenville back. RIGHT: Ware and Hooks team up to stop “BIG JOHNNY” Elba suddenly jumped to 4-0 on the year and was surely thinking of an undefeated season. The Tigers traveled to Greenville to take on the powerful Tigers of Pigeon Creek. The score was no indication of how close the game really was. Elba had now lost its first game of the year. BELOW: Folmar and Hooks stop Greenville runner short on key fourth down play BELOW LEFT: Look out for “Yogi” and “the Bull”. TOP LEFT: Phillips and English almost block extra Point. ABOVE: McCollough stops Troy Quarterback on the goalline stand. LEFT: Ware forces pass badly thrown. The Tigers now 4-1 headed back home to the foggy bottom to take on the always tough Charles Henderson High School Trojans. Elba dominated the game except for the early part of the third quarter when the Trojans put 12 points on the scoreboard. Elba ended any hope of a Troy win by adding a final touchdown early in the fourth period. FINAL SCORE: Elba 28 Troy 12. BELOW LEFT: Elba defense doing its job. BELOW: Henderson fights for touchdown. ABOVE: Its all over but the crying as Scott breaks the long one TOP RIGHT: English and Hooks show Yellowjackets what Tigers can do Elba now began to think about appearing in the playoffs. The Tigers needed at least two victories during the next three games to be assured of a spot in the playoffs. Elba kept the fans happy after a poorly played first half by putting three unanswered touch- downs on the board. The Tigers had finally proved they were a solid football team by coming from be- hind in the first half and beating the Ashford Yel- lowjackets. FINAL SCORE: Elba 24 — Ashford 7. This was the game the Tigers had been preparing for half the season. Abbeville was a big powerful team but it proved to be no match for the Tigers as Elba rolled up win number 7. The tremendous Homecoming victory clinched a playoff spot for the Tigers! FINAL SCORE: Elba 28 — Abbeville 0. ABOVE: Henderson gives “the Hawk” as Scott scores. BELOW LEFT: Messick and English sack quarterback for big loss. BELOW: Morrow fights for bragging rights. TOP LEFT: Clark and company put quaedus to Bulldog runner. ABOVE: Henderson is stopped after good gain. LEFT: Petty gets an always helpful quarterback sack. Elba traveled back over to Covington County to take on the always powerful Bulldogs. The Tigers were out for revenge after an embarrassing loss to the Bulldogs the previous year. The Tigers kept the game in hand by rolling to an 18-6 half-time lead. This was enough to win. FINAL SCORE: Elba 18 — Andalusia 6. BELOW LEFT: McCollough lunges for touchdown BELOW: Scott breaks the last of his long runs of the season. TOP LEFT: Clark breaks up pitch. TOP RIGHT: English dives for fumble. MIDDLE: McCollough shows form in open field. The Tigers were back at home with a record of 8-1 to play a very tough Geneva team. Elba gave up a long touchdown late in the game to give the Panthers a 13-3 edge. A blocked punt early in the game gave Geneva the momentum it needed to defeat the Ti- gers. Elba’s record slipped to 8-2 for the regular sea- son. FINAL SCORE: Geneva 12 Elba 3. BOTTOM: Scott breaks outside for short gain. BOTTOM RIGHT: Hooks kicks Elba’s only points of the game. TOP LEFT: Sanders stops Eufaula runner as others close in. ABOVE: Scott heads up the middle of tough Eufaula defense. MIDDLE: McCollough throws desparation pass on the move. Elba traveled to the edge of Alabama to take on a very tough Eufaula team. Elba’s defense played tough during the game and kept Elba’s hope alive through out the night. Although Elba managed a late touchdown, the Eufaula Tigers came out on top. FI- NAL SCORE: Eufaula 27 Elba 6. BOTTOM LEFT: Hooks retuns kickoff. BELOW: The “Ware Pair” makes the sack. The 1983-84 varsity cheerleaders, with the help of their sponsor, Mrs. Pam Smith, worked very enthusias- tically this year in promoting school spirit for various athletic events. They sold many different items to help promote spirit and every Friday afternoon during foot- ball season, enthusiasm flowed from the gym during one of the many exciting pep rallies. The cheerleaders sponsored many dress-up days during which Elba High School was transformed into various havens for person- alities including punk rockers, swingers of the fifties, and halloween apparitions. They also sponsored a “Mr. Irresistible” contest, and of course, the traditional bon- fire and candle walk during the exhilerating week of homecoming. One of the highlights of the homecoming game was the announcement of the football sweetheart. This year’s football sweetheart, chosen by the football squad, was Stacey Carpenter. During the summer, although their trip to clinic fell through at the last minute, the cheerleaders invited an Auburn cheerleader to teach them numerous cheers, chants, pyramids, and dance routines. It was a lot of hard work but it paid off well. Although soon, several of the 1983-84 varsity cheerleader positions will be vacat- ed, their spirit, ideals, and experiences will linger in the hearts of those to follow.
