Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1983 volume:

As the 1982-83 school year began, a number of changes had been effected which touched student life. Closer con- finement to the campus, more rigid disciplinary require- ments, and economic stress challenged students to make the most of every moment. Students considered the values that could be learned from their everyday experiences instead of counting success in terms of points and averages. _ Motivated by pride, students tried to create an orderly and disciplined environment for study as they cheered effort and originality. By drawing on deep inner resources nted through the years by parents and teachers, stu- - “c successfully faced the challenges thrust upon them as @ they evidenced bits of humor, wisdom, and a sense of fair “play. Consequently, THE STUDENTS DEVELOPED NEW WAYS OF EXPRESSING THEMSELVES AND WORKED TOGETHER We te! a On ren nN —_ eo O = a ao = ca “ ao , S AND TO BUILD LASTING FRIENDSHIPS et FOR THE FUTURE. The week of Homecoming at Elba High School held true to its tradition of being busy. It began to take form long before the actual day with the election of a queen and court, the planning of events for the honored class, and the designing of various parade entries and schedules. The dream of all little girls came true for Miss Rita Coon when she was elected Homecoming Queen by her fellow stu- dents. Selected to attend Rita were Melissa Silar, Gina Donald- son, Cathynette Carpenter, Dawn Smith, and Starla Henderson. The parade was the final product of many hours of work. The seventh grade took top honors in the day’s float competi- tion. The honors in club competition went to the Youth for Christ. The day climaxed when the Elba Tigers defeated the Ashford Yellow Jackets 18-8. 18 CAMPUS BEAUTY Toni Hudson On December 2, 1982, forty-two lovely young ladies graced the Elba High School stage for the honors of Campus Beauty and Miss Bronze. The evening was highlighted by a production number performed by “the girls.” After several elimina- tions, the judges named Miss Toni Hudson as Cam- pus Beauty. An edgy and vastly inexperienced Elba Tiger football team began its 1982 season in Brundidge against the Pike County Bulldogs. The Bulldogs took control of the game early and scored easily against the Tiger def ense. The en- tire first half was dominated by Pike County. The second half was hard fought with the only scoring coming on a safety. Late in the fourth period it seemed Elba was on its way to a victory. The Tigers were on the Bulldog twenty- yard line when a controversial officials’ ruling ended it suddenly. The Bulldogs took over and held on for the victory. FINAL SCORE: Elba 10 — Pike Co. 14. TOP RIGHT: Kelley and McKinnon closed in to help Fortune make the stop. ABOVE LEFT: Scott fought hard for extra yardage. ABOVE RIGHT: Meacham and McKinnon combined to cage up Bulldog. BOTTOM RIGHT: Coach Wood attempted to point out apparent officials’ mistake. 8 ABOVE: Hooks led “Skeeter” around end to only Tiger touchdown. RIGHT: Spicer made his presence known to Warhawk quarterback. BOTTOM RIGHT: Gunnells led the way for Henderson. BOTTOM LEFT: McCollough reached in vain for Hudson aerial. The Daleville Warhawks came to town ready to hand the Tigers their sec- ond loss of the season. The game was a tough, hard-hitting brawl with the War- hawks getting an easy touchdown fol- lowing a pass interception. It seemed that that score would be the only points in the game until the Tigers got the ball with just overseven minutes remaining. Led by the running of Michael ‘“Skeet- er” Scott, Elba mounted a drive that consumed six minutes of the clock and covered eighty-eight yards to put six points on the scoreboard. They then gambled and attempted a two-point conversion which was successful. The Tiger defense held Daleville to preserve Elba’s first win. FINAL SCORE: Elba 8 — Daleville 7. The Elba Tigers traveled to Luverne with revenge on their minds. With a boost of confidence from a victory the previous week, the Tigers expected an easy win. However, mistakes riddled the Elba squad throughout the whole first half as Elba fans saw their team trail at the half 13-0. They came out smoking in the second half and tied the game 13-13. It looked as though it would end in a tie, but the Luverne offense drove all the way for the winning score in just three plays. Thus, Elba fell for the second time in three games. FINAL SCORE: Elba 13 — Luverne 19. ABOVE LEFT: Meacham made key reception to keep Tiger drive alive. ABOVE RIGHT: “Be-Ware”’ caused Luverne back to give up the ball. LEFT: Senior defensive ends Terry Spicer and John Mea- cham teamed up to put six on the board. BOTTOM: Hudson worked option to perfection. TOP LEFT: Fortune and Hooks teamed up to make the stop. TOP RIGHT: Hudson turned it upfield for a long touch- down romp. The Opp Bobcats came to Elba ready to play. The game was dominated by Elba, although the scoreboard did not show it. The score Opp had accumulated in the first half was too much to overcome. When the dust had cleared, Elba had dropped to 1-3. FINAL SCORE: Elba 15 — Opp 21. The Elba Tigers hosted the Greenville Tigers, who were unbeaten and destined to remain that way. Elba fought hard through three quarters, but they were blown out in the last period. All of a sudden Elba was 1-4, very uncharacteristic of a Coach Wood football team. FINAL SCORE: Elba 0 — Greenville 28. ABOVE: Scott looked downfield as he caught Hudson pass. RIGHT: McCollough broke away momentarily from stingy Greenville defense. The Elba Tigers decided to make a change in their season as they journeyed to Troy to scrap with the Charles Henderson High Trojans. The Tigers came out hot and hungry for a win. The Trojans were dominated throughout offensively and defensively for four quarters. Elba had proven they could win and a spark of hope gleamed in Elba High fans’ eyes. FINAL SCORE: Elba 18 — Troy 7. (Editor’s Note: Due to mechanical failure of the camera no pictures were available.) FIRST ROW: Millie Pearce, Dawn Smith, Coach Mack Wood, Stacey Carpenter, Gina Donaldson; SECOND ROW: Susan Dorsey, Kim Whitman, Susan King, Charlie Marler, Steve Todd; THIRD ROW: Shelia Johnson, Wendy Bowers, Erwin Gunnells, Vincent Fortune, Rhett McCollough; FOURTH ROW: Lisa Moore, Brian English, Randy Greathouse, Danny Folmar, Dwayne Hooks; FIFTH ROW: Kevin Kelley, Marshall Bowers, Steve Parker, Blue Morrow, Dowe Clark; SIXTH ROW: Tim Dyess, Jeff Goodson, John Meacham, Brad English; SEVENTH ROW: Tim Flowers, Gary Kelley, Claude Dorsey, Larry Mills, Ken Ware; LAST ROW: John Hudson, Michael Maddox, Rubin McKinnon, Mark Henderson, Danny Ennis. The Tigers were at home for Home- coming and faced a fine Ashford foot- ball team. The same intensity demon- strated the week before showed up again. Ashford’s only score came as a fumble recovery was returned for a touchdown. Suddenly, the Tigers were a dominating power, winning their sec- ond straight and upping their record to 3-4, FINAL SCORE: Elba 18 — Ashford 8. TOP: The Tiger defense swarmed against Ashford. LEFT: Rhett McCollough “got a kick” out of running the ball against Ashford. RIGHT: Mills and Spicer closed in to help out their team- mates. BOTTOM: Gunnells came to the aid of McCollough to stop the Yellowjacket. With the thought of having a losing season, Elba went to Abbeville to take on some big Yellowjackets. Elba got some breaks early and turned them into two touchdowns. It seemed that the game was about to be blown open. However, Abbeville rallied furiously but Elba only had to score once to hold off the Yellowjackets. With this win, the Tigers evened their record at 4-4. FI- NAL SCORE: Elba 21 — Abbeville 14. TOP: McCollough lunges for extra yardage. LEFT: The Tiger defense overwhelmed the Abbeville offense. RIGHT: Hudson helped out the Tiger cause by adding every PAT. BOTTOM: Elba defense “dropped the bomb” on Abbeville. TOP: It was rough going for Elba backs against Andalusia. RIGHT: The Bulldog Tailback never had a chance. BOTTOM LEFT: John Hudson fired a pass, but it was futile. BOTTOM RIGHT: The Tiger defense converged to crunch Bulldog quarterback. - Andalusia came to the Foggy Bottom intendig to spoil hopes of a winning season for Elba. They were fired up and proved to everyone they were prepared to play. The Tigers were manhandled by the Bulldogs’ line, and the game was never close as a result. The offense could never get anything together, and the defense could not stop the Andalusia offense. Elba ended its season in a very sad way. Our Thanks To THE ELBA CLIPPER Ferrin Cox, Owner And Publisher And Ricky Mularz, Editor For The Use Of Many Photos, And The Friendly Assistance Shown To Elba High School Through The Years 1983 Elbala Staff Just as suddenly as our final year had begun, so was it ending. We found ourselves searching for a reason for shouldering a degree of sadness at what was supposed to be the highlight in the lives of each of us. We realized the challenges facing us would be great; yet by having learned from our past experiences, we had secured the special knowledges needed to confront such challenges.
