This year Elba High was proud to announce as its Homecoming Queen, Miss Betsy Brunson, followed by her court consisting of Wanda Walker, Lynn Mills, Melissa Martin, Rita Coon, and Molly Walker. Homecoming this year was high- lighted with the Elba Tigers taking an impressive 49-7 win over the Dale Co. Warriors. The Student Council is a means by which the students can express their thoughts and feelings concerning a particular issue. Its purpose is to develop attitudes of, and practice in, good citizen- ship; promote the general welfare of the school; provide a well- organized student government; and establish good moral charac- ter throughout the school. The Student Council is responsible for many school activities. Along with being responsible for the annual movie and Home- coming activities, the Council sponsored Teacher Appreciation Day and a faculty Christmas party. The Council’s sponsor is Mack King. The Junior Student Council is composed of those students in grades 7-9. The responsibilities are much the same as those of the Senior Student Council. The members of both councils work together to obtain the satisfaction and sup- port of the junior and senior high schools. The representa- tives of both councils are elected by popular vote, with four members from each class. The officers are also elected by popular vote. The Junior Student Council sponsor is Mrs. Helms. The purposes of the Beta Club are to promote the ideals of honesty, service, and leadership among high school students of America, to reward meritorious achieve- ment, and to encourage and assist students to continue their education after high school. Some activities of this year’s Beta Club were: the concession stands fot football and basketball games, two discos- includ- ing the Homecoming Dance, and entry in the Homecoming parade, attending the Beta Club Convention, the EHS page in The Elba Clipper, and the annual initiation of the new members. The Mu Alpha Theta consists of those senior high school students who have indicated an interest in mathematics and have demonstrated high mathetical ability. To become a member, one must have been en- rolled in one of the higher mathemat- ics courses. Members must also have and maintain a B average for at least two consecutive semesters. The club members enjoy a number of activities throughout the year. Among these are the judging of the Homecoming Parade entries, partici- pating in math tournaments, conduct- ing ciphering contests, and attending the annual Math Convention. The purpose of Chi Alpha Mu is to pro- mote interest, enjoyment, and understand- ing of mathematics among junior high stu- dents. These students are chosen by various teachers accord- ing to scholastic achievements. From this group of students a four member team is selected to compete in the televised High School Prep Bow! sponsored by the Troy State University Commu- nications Department. English rambles. The Tigers opened the 1979 season at home with an impressive win over the visiting bulldogs from Pike County. The Tigers took a 7 point lead into the dressing room at half-time but put it all together in the second half to score 23 points. The offense moved the ball at will and the defense shut down the highly explosive bulldog offense. FINAL SCORE: Elba 30 — Brundige 0 The following week the Geneva Panthers rolled into town fired up and smelling an upset. The spirit the Panthers brought with them was not enough to stop the awesome Elba attack. The Tigers’ class, pride, and teamwork were at a peak. FINAL SCORE: Elba 27 — Geneva 7 Clark and Hall “zero” in Opp bobcat. The Elba Tigers hosted the Luverne Tigers in Tiger Stadium while holding a 2 - 0 record. The offense moved the ball willingly all night as the defense did its job by holding the Luverne offense to 13 points. Elba totally dominated the game from start to finish. FINAL SCORE: Elba 41 — Luverne 13. Going into the fourth game of the season and ranked second in the state, the Tigers tasted the bitterness of defeat for the first time. The Tigers never could get things on track all through the contest and saw all hopes diminish for an undefeated season in an overtime loss to Opp. FINAL SCORE: Elba 20 — Opp 21. Horstead breaks free. English falls for yardage. Homecoming week at EHS brought many festivities and a fired up Elba squad. The Tigers and Warriors were tied at 7 at halftime. The second half saw the tigers awake to score six touchdowns in route to victory number 4. FINAL SCORE: Elba 49 -Dale County 7. TOP: Horstead gains good yardage. MIDDLE: King keeps. BOTTOM: Harrelson, Clark and Hudson stop warrior. The Tigers held a 4 - 1 record as they rolled into Coach Wood's old stomping grounds on Pigeon Creek to take on a young Greenville team. Elba’s offense never really got on track but did manage to scrape up 17 points. Elba’s defense came through to hold Greenville to 6 points. FINAL SCORE: Elba 17 — Greenville 6. Daniels takes care of business. “Easy as Pie.” The Tigers took a giant step toward the state play-offs as they stunned the Trojans of Charles Henderson. At the end of a hard fought half the scrappy Tigers had cushioned themselves a 17-7 lead. Both teams came out from half-time waving their colors, but in the end it was Elba on top. This same was just one example of team effort by the Tigers. FINAL SCORE: Elba 24 — Troy 20. RIGHT: King looks for yardage. Below: Hall wraps up Trojan. After coming off a big win, the Tigers traveled to Houston County to take on the Yellowjackets of Ashford. After a disgusting first half, the Tigers trailed 3-0. Elba came out fired up in the second half to score 21 points to ice the victory. The victory over the Yellowjackets upped the Tigers record to 7-1. FINAL SCORE: Elba 21 — Ashford 3. The Tigers back on the road for the second straight week journeyed to Daleville to take on the much improved Warhawks. The Tigers offense put it all together to score 7 touchdowns and chalk up their eighth win of the season. FINAL SCORE: Elba 48 — Daleville 21 ELBA DOES IT AGAIN! The Elba Tigers break a 49-game winning streak. The Tigers knew what the situation was and what they had to do before they took the field. Elba and Andalusia battled hard during the first half and the score was tied at 7 after a 34 yard reception from King to Westbrook. The stingy Tigers’ defense rose to the occasion in the third quarter to keep the poweful bulldog offense in the hole for the remainder of the game while the offense scored two important touchdowns to secure the game. Eufaula, the defending 3A champs handed Elba their second loss of the season. Elba could never get things rolling as Eufaula capitalized on the Tiger’s heartbreaking mistakes. The Tigers went home ending a very successful season on a losing note.
