SEVENTH GRADE The purpose of 4-H is to build a better understanding for young people growing up. 4-H has a wide variety of projects so that anyone can participate and enjoy it, too. 4-H is also a learning experience; one can learn anything from clothing to driving a tractor. EIGHTH GRADE Millions of high school students are now pursuing their education in the changing environment of desegregating schools. In some schools the desegregation process has been underway for several years, in others it is a new experience. In almost every case, the continuing desire to improve the quality of education for all students has re- quired that school officials, parents, and other community members work together to solve new and old problems. This cooperative approach works best when students par- ticipate actively in this effort because they are the ones most directly affected by the changes within their school environment. In the summer of 1972, the President signed into law the Emergency School Aid Act (ESSA). This act created a program designed to provide financial assistance to local school districts and nonprofit groups in the implementa- tion of new programs to aid minority school children in overcoming educational disadvantages; to eliminate, pre- vent, or reduce minority group segregation and discrimi- nation. MARCHING TIGERS fo ay et s ete, SS ana | 3 Re He ; 24 ‘Band The rougher times were during the football season when most of the bandsmen’s waking hours and part of their sleep were spent either at band practice or in avoidance of it. They regarded band as sheer drudgery and it hung like a shadow over their lives. Of course the band members were aware that there were rewards, but outside in the heat of the afternoon sun they seemed few and far between. The hours of repeating a section until they were about to drop were thoroughly discouraging, especially when they were told that everything was wrong. Strangly enough, to the bandsmen’s sun-baked brains it did not appear unstable to take an almost entirely different view at a later date, especially if it were after a contest in which they did well. At those times everything but the happiness and satisfaction faded into obscurity. And now remembered, it suddenly becomes worth it all. Every moment of that drudgery which the Marching Tigers once held in dread has been transformed into a precious treasure. Those gallons of perspiration that they lost paid for some of the most valuable lessons they will ever learn. ELBALA One of the most distinguishing aspects of being a senior is being allowed to serve on the yearbook staff. This brings with it not only honor but much responsibility. The seniors of ’78 entered into this year eager to begin and to meet this challenge. They set their goal to make a book which would capture the memories they would want to have kept for them in years to come. After much brain-straining, creativity, and hard work, the seniors did meet the challenge and reached their goal. And here it is. COACHING Coach Mance Daughtry, a graduate of Kinston High and Troy State, was the head basketball and junior football coach. Coach Daughtry’s teams consis- tently represent EHS in a very fine manner. Coach Mack Wood, a graduate of Greenville High School and Troy State University, served as head football coach of the Elba Tigers. In his first year at EHS, he and his staff guided the Tigers to a 6-4 record and began to build what was destined to be one of the finest football pro- grams in the state. Coach John F. Hudson, a graduate of Elba High School and Troy State, serves as line coach for the varsity football team. After building an excellent record as a head coach, Coach Hudson has become an ex- tremely valuable assistant coach. in Coach Willie Tyson, a graduate of EHS and Alabama State, is an assistant varsity football coach and ninth grade basketball coach. One of the finest players to ever play at Elba, Coach Tyson’s experience and guidance have greatly aided the Tigers. Coach Dale Crowe, a graduate of Cass High School and Troy State, served as an assistant junior football coach, and Golf coach. Coach Crowe played an important role in the overall success of EHS athletics. Scarbrough, Stewart, and Wood lead the way, as Dyess breaks loose for yardage. Final score: Enterprise 25, Elba 7. Homecoming week brought a festive atmosphere and a fired-up band of Dale County Warriors to Tiger Stadium. The Tigers rose to the occasion, however, and played what was, perhaps, their best game of the season. All three of Elba’s senior running backs scored TD’s, and a stiff defense shutout the visiting Warriors. The Tigers’ record now stood at 4- 1. Final score: Elba 21, Dale Co. 0. ASHFORD Foye a STADIUM “Se , Ce Ve 1 bos Ss cg ded apr. Scoreboard reads 7-0 after Fuller’s brilliant kick- off return. The Troy Trojans came to try to avenge a losing streak of four against the Tigers. Junior tight end Russ Wood had a fine game against his old team, and helped Elba burst to a quick 14-0 lead. Elba’s defensive unit held on a last-minute drive to give the Tigers the victory. Final score: Elba 20, Troy 14. The Elba Tigers journeyed to Ashford to take on the explosive Ashford Yellowjackets. Perry Fuller returned the opening kickoff for a TD, and Elba bolted to a 21-0 lead. The Tigers’ defense again stopped a late rally to defeat the gallant Yellowjackets. Ye, VY Aca os: — y : Ellenburg shows all-conference form, as he makes the tackle against Eufaula. Brown goes high to break up Andalusia pass. The Tigers journeyed to Eufaula to face the talented Eufaula Tigers. Turnovers and missed chances spelled doom for Elba. Eufaula showed a well-designed defense and a lightning-quick offense, and dealt the Elba Tigers their third loss. Final score: Eufaula 19, Elba 0. If Elba could upset the mighty Andalusia Bulldogs, they still held a chance for a state playoff berth. It was not to be, however, as the Bulldogs dominated the second half to nullify some fine first half defensive play by the Tigers. Playoff hopes vanished, but the future still looked bright.
