Even as soon as the Monday before, the fervor and excitement began building. Floats were under construc- tion; dresses were being bought by the Home- coming court; plans were being finalized for the coronation; everything began falling into place for that one special day--Homecoming. And what a day it was! The whole student body witnessed the crowning of the queen that morn- ing at the annual coronation ceremony. The pa- rade entertained young and old alike with its colorful floats and beautiful young ladies. And as the climax of all the events, the Elba-Eu- faula game that night thrilled all and brought EHS spirit and pride to its maximum. Even though the Homecoming of 1976 is a memory now, we of EHS will always cherish the fun and excitement of that day. Surprise, anguish, ecstasy--the face runs through the gamut of emotions everyday. Here at Elba High School we have some of the most interesting faces in the world. ELBALA STAFF One of the most awesome responsibilities assigned to the Seniors is that of creating the yearbook; this year we believe we have met the challenge well. We began the year totally unaware of the work, time, and pa- tience needed to create an Elbala. Advice came from all directions, but no one could really tell us what was ahead. So we organized our staff, took our pictures, and plunged in. How penetrating it was to stare at the blank layout page for the very first time! But after writing and re- writing, drawing and redrawing, our ideas began to take form. We finished a page, then two, and finally we were well on our way to creating hopefully the best yearbook Elba High School has seen. As eventful as this year has been, we sometimes had roblems with decidir just what to put in the 1977 Ibala. Homecoming, the Prom, Miss Elbala--all were occasions we shall long remember, especially we Seniors who shall never experience these events again. We dedicated ourselves to making a yearbook that, in years to come, will serve to jar memories and stir emotions. We have built this history around the unforgetable 1976-1977 year and our lives at Elba High School. MARCHING TIGERS THE BAND--PEOPLE STRIVING TOGETHER TO BE THE BEST ELBA HIGH SCHOOL BAND ''Stand at attention,''--''Pick up your feet.'' These are only a few things frequently heard at a rehearsal of the Elba High School Marching Ti- gers. What makes people go out in 100°sunshine or march through the mud for four hours without a break? Pride! And pride is what the Marching Ti- gers have plenty of. It takes much desire and dedication to achieve the superior position of a No. 1 band which the Marching Tigers have achieved and maintained for many years. This year the Marching Band attended three marching contests--Troy Marching Band Festi- val, Gulf Coast Marching Band Festival, and the Enterprise Band Festival. The band received eleven superior ratings and three excellent rat- ings; many hours went into preparation for each. After marching season, the work had only begun. Concert season took not as much physical effort but twice the mental stress as marching band. It was very difficult to be a superior concert band, but the Surehonic Band made it seem easy, for in 1976 they made Superior ratings at State Con- test for the first time ever in the band's history. It's not easy, though, to have the fine reputation that the Elba High School Band has. All year the Elba Band participates in various activities and represents the City of Elba very well. So many times it seems impossible to march an- other step or blow another note, but it is all worth- while when the band director says, ''Band... that was great.'! =, i. yo -% ; ot F pe) Lom 349 N n N Se ¥: : os 1B Beer tad COTE re Peer ar rr ‘ ie alt it, foe hei Se te eee — oS 7 ey Sees ow FR rrr Pre eee Er OT : eS sepa Vee aaa PRS Ty ae mt, 4° np % M “Til 25 hae Fae Seah et 7 Sute FRONT ROW: Donna Hudson, 8th grade representative; Rachelle Boze- man, 9th grade representative; Lisa Whitehurst, Secretary; Lynn Hud- son, Vice-President; SECOND ROW: Ervin Wambles, President; Pam Bludsworth, Drum Ma- jor; Jenny Hudson, Head Majorette; D'Aun Wilson, Color Guard Captain THE SYMPHONIC BAND Jan Autrey, Donna Bludsworth, Pam Bludsworth, Kathy Brooks, Susie Bruce, Betsy Brunson, Debbie Bryan, Kenneth Bryan, Andy Bullard, Nita Calhoun, Freddie Clark, Mark Clark, Pam Compton, Traci Daniels, Terri Davis, Sam DeVane, Roxie Donaldson, Francine Fowler, Lisa Galimore, Greg Gibson, Mike Gibson, Tina Goodson, Cobie Gray, Elaine Grimes, Sharon Grimes, Jakie Hardy, Bev Hargrove, Jay Harper, Katrina Hayes, Michael Henne, Lynn Hobson, Donna Hudson, Jenny Hudson, Lynn Hudson, Cindy Jacobs, Stephanie Johns, Jason Johnson, Kathy Kelley, Phyllis Kelley, Paula Kidd, Rhonda Knight, Jackie Lee, Les Lee, Tina Lee, Vaughan Lee, Keith Lewis, Chuck Mack, Carla McDonald, Anita Mobley, David Morrow, Gypsy Morrow, Valerie Oggs, Villa Owens, Charlotte Paul, Melanie Rainer, Charles Ray, Patricia Rogers, Allyson Vaughan, Virginia Vaughan, Ervin Wambles, Lynn White- hurst, Kathy Whitman, Debbie Williams, Becky Wise, Mark Young, Tammy Young, Terry Young, Lynn Ziglar, Danny Baxley THE CONCERT BAND Teresa Anderson, Ricky Askew, Melinda Bane, Angela Bartley, Amy Baxley, Candy Berry, Teresa Bludsworth, Todd Boswell, Rachelle Bozeman, Velvett Brewer, Gary Brinkmeier, Susan Bruekner, Michael Bryan, Casey Corley, Debbie Compton, Karen Cook, Steve Cowart, Cheri Crocker, Marti Crocker, Tim Daniels, Morris Davis, Sherrie Donaldson, Mack Driggers, Scott English, Jennifer Ennis, Tammy Finder, Rex Free, Kevin Fuller, Debbie Gibson, Shannon Hargrove, Delonda Harrelson, Carol Holt, Selena Hooks, Jamie Hudson, Jan Hudson, Jan Kelley, Fleming Kendrick, Patricia Lawrence, Donnie Lee, Jennifer Lee, Nancy Lindsey, Charles Mallory, Tami Mallory, Vonda Marler, Melissa Martin, Julie Maulden, Todd McCollough, Kim McGuire, Cindy Miller, Lynn Mills, Cindy Morgan, Len Newton, Lynn Owens, Tammy Padgett, Kim Parrish, Angela Ray, Charlotte Robinson, Will Rushing, Sandra Sexton, Velinda Skinner, Sherri Smart, Felicia Smith, Sandra Thrasher, Holly Vaughan, Cynthia Whatley, Steve White- hurst, Pam Williams, Ginger Wilson THE COLOR GUARD Cindy Allen, Phoebe Allen, Reatha Bowden, Rachelle Bozeman, Arlean Brown, Betsy Brunson, Kay Bryan, Ca,olyn Caldwell, Lesa Crook, Sundra Daniels, Beverly Fuller, Shelia Hornsby, Lori Jones, Janet Lockett, Cindy Morgan, Valerie Oggs, Lynn Owens, Villa Owens, Marla Rideaux, Melinda Smart, D'Aun Wilson, Becky Wise THE DRUM MAJOR THE MAJORETTES po ecae old ‘ i am bee Ni SEE y ae a Saat ECR Ta ty Beverly Hargrove, Katrina Hayes, Jenny Hudson, Lisa Galimore, Gypsy Morrow EABA TIGERS OF °28 A WORLD OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS a7, ° ayy NS Ah RN A Pike County 22-0 Geneva 0-17 Luverne 14-13 Opp 20-0 Dale County 26-13 Enterprise 7-20 Troy 28-14 Ashford 24-21 Eufaula 7-20 Andalusia 14-24 = _. A WORLD OF PRIDE! . a OUR '76 YEAR IN FOOTBALL Under the leadership of Coach ''Mac'' Champi- on, Elba football again returned to the winning track despite key injuries and lack of size. The Tigers proved that football is not just a game of power, but a sport that could be won through quickness and team unity. The season started out with an impressive 22- O win over a basitae be Brundidge team. The offense moved the ball virtually at will all night due to the line's fine blocking. The second game found the Tigers never getting on track against Geneva. The game was played in a thunderstorm and Elba got the short end of a 17-0 game. As the Tigers went into the Lu- . verne game, they were a different group. They were demoralized and lacked an essential ele- ment--confidence. But excellent playing turned around the game, and probably the sea- son, as Elba won 4-13. As the Tigers pre- pared for Opp, they looked like anew club. a was coming in with a perfect record, but Elba had confidence and was playing at home for the first time. Elba's defense held Opp to two total yar in the second half and no points in the allgame. The Tigers soared to a 20-0 win. OUR YEAR, CONTINUED The next week, Elba journeyed to play a weak Dale County team. Everyone on the team played and the Tigers were 27-14 victors. Then came the game with Enterprise. The Tigers' scrappy style won over the fans, but a dejected Tiger team fell to the Wildcats witha 20-7 loss. The Tigers then visited the Trojans of Troy and quickly demolished their Homecoming. The Elba-Ashford game was picked as ''Game-of- the Week’! a ey lived up to its billing. Vic- tory was sweet as the Tigers roared toa 24-21 win. The last two games of the season were let- downs for the Tigers. Eufaula spoiled the Ti- ae Homecoming with a 20-7 win, and the igers were defeated by the Andalusia Bull- dogs 24-14. For the year, the Tigers finished with a 6-4 record--a turn-around sparked excellent coaching. In addition, Larry Phillips was named All-Conference, and several players re- ceived Honorable Mention. It was a fine year full of great accomplishments, and we salute the Tigers of 1976-77 for them. SENIOR TIGERS ADD SPIRIT AND PRIDE One of the most important ele- ments for any successful group or team is a quality called 'leadership''. And in high school, that responsibility usually falls on a very elite and dignified group--the Sen- iors. Their guidance is espe- cially helpful on the football field where the coach can do little but send in information. Seniors are called on by the coaches to ci spirits up and set examples for the others. ee ee 1 a pe ABOVE: Tim M Sylvester Goosby, Russ Cash, Mark H Win Westbrook sition filled with many tag Gibson, Shayne Bullard, Teddy Vaugien, Since Masrelacn, Willie Lowe, sibilities and the Seniors of Teddy Barnes. These girls have had the job of inspiring pep and spirit in the Student bady, and this has been a great respon- sibility both on the football field and the bas- etal court. The great potential of the group was seen early in the year, for these girls won numerous awards at a cheerleading clinic they attended at Auburn University in the summer. Since then they have done a wonderful job in- stilling pride in their fellow students of Elba High School. Indeed, the 1976-77 Varsity cheerleaders have made the year more exciting and memorable. SCENES FROM THE 5 () CS CHEERLEADERS SPONSOR 50’S DAY”’ In an attempt to boost pep and pride, the Elba cheerleaders sponsored a 50's day. Everyone was to come to school on that Friday dressed in 50's-type clothing, and since the spirit at EHS is so great, every- one did. It was amazing to see the imagi- nation of some of our students, and even teachers. cal skirts, bobby socks, and reased-down hair abounded as Elba High chool took a 20- year step backwards. But the fun of the day must be attributed to the cheerleaders who planned the day and supported it in every way possible. JUNIOR TEAM ENJOYS WINNING SEASON Led by Coach Mance Daughtry, the Junior Tigers rolled to an impressive 7-1 record, losing only to Andalusia. Highlighting the team's season were quarterback Alan King and runningbacks Harrelson and Thomas. The Tigers displayed an explosive offense and a very stingy defense throughout the season. Although it is not realized by many people, it is here where the Varsity players are developed. FRONT ROW: Troy Brown, Anthony Coleman, Alonzo Hammonds, Franky; Daniels, Greg Hudson, Scotty Farmer. They are lead by head coach Mac Champion, who has one of the best records in high school football. Assisting him are Sam Cooper, the backfield and B- Team basketball coach; Dale Crowe, the line coach; and Mance Daughtry, the ju- nior oe coach and Varsity basketball coach. VARSITY BASKETBALL Perhaps the most spectator involved, and most highly spirited game at Elba is basketball. In basketball, the home court is a great advantage, for the fans make the home team play over their heads and also intimidate the visitor. But this year's team is a team that can play well anywhere. Inspired by Coach Mance Daughtry, the Tigers are aggressive and quick and one of the most exciting teams in Elba histo- ry. Deepest Aes Saban ae Dale Crowe, Ken Martin, Alan King, Joey Holley, Scottie Weeks, Claude Collier Nothing can exemplify a class's organiza- tion, cooperation, and ibe better than working on some common goal; thus, one of the greatest achievements of our senior class was that of creating the 1976 Ju- nior-Senior Prom. It was a week of tire- some work, but the enjoyment and excite- ment gained from the Saaning and building was our reward. The theme for the Prom was ''Hawaii,'' and the most was made of it. Bamboo, nets, palm trees--nothing was overlooked as a method of decorating. Committees were formed to take care of each area of decoration, refreshments, and entertain- ment. Everyone had a job to do and no one was unimportant. But the effort and worry was worthwhile, for the senior class again proved what a splendid job it could do. And we finally reached that step of the ladder! At last we were the Juniors of '77. Electing officers wasn't to much of a task for us. After all, by looking at their picture, we think we did a fine job. The time that many of us anticipated soon arrived. ''What kind of ring did you order?'' were familiar words for a few weeks. And those weeks became months as we waited the arrival of those precious things. Our class had its share of beauty and personality. This was represented by having two of our own as runners-up in the Miss Elbala pageant. But to top that, ''Miss Elbala'' was a beautiful Junior. Also, in the Homecoming Court, we were represented by one from the Junior Class. Four of the most spirited cheerleaders for this year were Ju- niors. They helped lead our star Junior football and basket- ball players to many victories. With all this in mind, we feel as if we've left behind a good mark for ourselves. And with all the memories of stored, we have come to the greatest thing--becoming Sen- iors of '78! We have learned -or perhaps we have discovered - - just how much the people and principles of Elba High School mean to us. We can't help becoming just a little misty-eyed as we see that, just as work on the annual must end, the time is coming for us to leave the familiar halls and rooms of EHS for a final time. With a feeling of deep respect and love, we, the seniors of 1977, present this chronical of our world at Elba High School.
