We come to class, match wits with the fac- ulty, struggle through tests, and arch for meaning in the midst of it all. Even though the drud- gery seems endless, there must be an underlying factor uniting all aspects of school life. Where can we find it? oe. a f fa tf dl , é i= “% Ls ; ¥ 7 uy 9 t q he Z ; 4 w he ; . é i? 7 mi) - a Pg ; , ¢ aad Se A tee Emotion is only a fraction of the total being: the mind dominates. Each day, we are flooded with a torrent of new ideas rushing at us from all directions. Our individual ideas become a mixture of. the thoughts and conceptions of persons around. We are free to accept, reject, or compromise these ideas. This freedom to decide gives us our individuality. People with different lifestyles and varied in- terests form the many facets of the total scene of Elba High School. As the pieces fall into place, we become a complete body, united by a common purpose. ABOVE: A student takes time out for last minute cram- ming before that important test. CHES fs BLBA HIGH SCHOOL: LOZ 1974 ELBALA ELBA, ALABAMA Editor—Cherrie Clay Assistant Editor—Bunny Cox Organization and Enthusiasm Homecoming Spirit. . . Elba High was alive with it from the first preparations to the end. This spirit originated from the long hard hours of work in anticipation of Homecoming Day. The Student Council had the enormous task of coordinat- ing all activities for Homecoming. This year’s honored class was the Class of ’43. The festivities officially began with the bonfire and Pep Rally Thursday night on the track field. The action continued Friday morning with the coronation of the Homecoming Court, followed by the traditional parade that afternoon. The winners in the float competition were: first place, the 7th grade’s Tiger Volkswagen; second place, “Tigers Can Do Anything” from the 10th grade; third place, the 9th grade’s “Walking Tall.” Winners of the school club cars were as follows: first place to the Pep Club; second place to the French Club; and third place to the Science Club. ae Fi ew The events were climaxed Friday night with an exciting game against the Trojans from Charles Henderson High School. After the game, students and alumni attended the semi-formal dance until mi dnight. ir, combined to make Homecoming ‘73 the best yet Every high school girl dreams of being honored by her fellow classmates with the title of Homecoming Queen. For Kathy Bowers, the dream came true. Her bright smile and friendly personality lent a warm glow to the Homecoming activities. The Senior Class selected the lovely Brenda Spann as their court attendant. Theresa Crook was chosen to represent the Juniors. Delisa Smith held the honor of Sophomore Class attendant, and Connie Carpenter was voted Freshman Class Attendant. Friday morning, the Queen was coro- nated in a beautiful and impressive coro- nation ceromony in which the band and ROTC performed. Jack Brunson, Student Council President, crowned Kathy and presented her flowers before the student body. The attendants were also presented flowers by representatives from their respective classes. In the parade, the Homecoming Court rode the beautiful Queen’s float planned and built by the Seniors. The fast pace of the game... the excitement of being near the action . . . the unity of the Basketball at Elba High has something for everyone. There is no better way to spend a Friday night than to get caught up in the spirit of a basketball game. The ex- citement is felt heavily in the hot gym air as the team and the crowd strain and sweat together for those two points. Sink it, sink it!! The score rises along with the tension. Feet pound the floor as teams race from goal to goal. All eyes are on the ball and the player whose hands grip it. The game becomes a battle between the two student bodies, as well as between teams. The players’ feeling show on their faces . . . determination .. . that drive to win. . . tremendous physical effort. A victory would mean not only that the best team won, but that the best student body won. Make those points, guys. Win it for all of us. We are very proud of this year’s Tiger team. For the people of Elba, a beauty contest is something to look forward to. Every girl who passes across the stage is beautiful to someone in the audience, for out there sit the family and friends who know and love her. Every contestant dreams of wearing the crown and hold- ing the roses at the end of the night, but for one especially beautiful girl with the extra something, this dream will come true. That little extra something may be a bright smile, sparkling eyes, or a graceful walk, but it is certain to be found in any beauty queen. The judges must pick it out, and award the winner not only with a title, but with a great honor that she will carry in her memory through- out her life. We proudly present to you the beauties of our year, 1974. Finally the Master of Ceremonies, Lt. Col. Earl Perry, appeared, and things soon got underway. As each girl appeared on stage in casual and formal attire, the decision became increasingly difficult for the judges. The result, however, was at last announced and Miss Vanessa Newman, a 5’5” senior, was crowned. Lovely, green-eyed Vanessa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wyndol Newman. Since coming to Elba High School four years ago, she has become well-known and liked by both students and faculty. She is a varsity cheerleader and secretary of the Student Council. As she walks through the halls of E.H.S. Vanessa can hold her head high and claim a title no one else can claim— Miss Elbala for 1974. Bp Hot Rop CORY ya byl the now fia Cou ti flo. 4... Who can be expected to smile when all those lights are glaring at you?.. . Oh, no!. . . I’m next! The mass confusion back stage gave way to total com- posure on stage. A multitude of emotions such as these swept through the minds of twenty-eight excited girls on the night of the Miss Elba Contest. Each girl had her own special doubt, but poise and grace triumphed and the pageant flowed along as smoothly as the girls themselves. This contest was unique in that it was held in the spring of our Junior year so that the lucky winner could prepare for the National Peanut Festival in the fall. The judges were beseiged with indecision. Twice, the girls were called from the stage so that the judges could get a closer look—added pressure, to be sure, but daz- zling smiles prevailed. Finally a decision was reached: Miss Beverly Cox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cox, captured both the swimsuit competition and the coveted title of Miss Elba, 1974. Tears streaming freely—not to mention mascara—Miss_ Paula Taylor received the title of Miss Congeniality. Pleasant memories of roses, crowns, tears, ruined make-up, lightly wrinkled dresses, but un- dampered spirits will always make each of those twenty- eight girls smile. In the lives of second grade girls, where getting to go to the grocery store with mommy is a big event, a beauty contest stands out in their minds as being a very special occurence—something that “big girls” do. This special experience for the girls was the annual Little Miss Elba contest, held on September 28, 1973. Every year the winner not only receives the honor of With the help of the second grade teachers, the contestants practice for the big night. being Elba’s prettiest little girl, but she also attends the Dothan Peanut Festival. The girls were so quiet back stage that you could have heard a pin drop—very much unlike their older counterparts. It was an exciting night for all the girls— one they will probably never forget, especially Step- hanie Smith, our reigning Little Miss Elba! Student Council The Student Council is the leading organization and the governing body at Elba High. The objectives are to coordinate activities between the students, faculty, and community, and to build a better relationship among these groups. Thus far, the Student Council has been more active than it has in the past few years. This was the year for innovation: the Student Council instigated the new Student Handbook and the morning devotions over the P.A. system. In addition, the Council had full charge of homecoming activities, including the parade and dance. It sponsored the Christmas assembly pro- gram and other programs of a patriotic theme, and also provided the first Valentine’s Day dance. Beta Club The Beta Club is an honorary society com- posed of those students in grades 9 through 12 who have achieved at least a B average in each credit course for the year. The students who maintain this average for three semesters are rec- ognized at graduation. Each year the Beta Club sponsors a variety fea- ture program in which students participate. This activity which serves as the club’s main fund rais- ing project, provides funds which are used for the purchase of serviceable equipment for the school. Beta Club members enjoy many activities dur- ing the year, but each year is highlighted by the annual Beta Club convention in Birmingham in the spring. The Club’s sponsor, Waylon Sharp- less, has been with the club 10 years, and has guided the Beta Club into what it is today. French Club Seventy-four students who enjoy the study of French culture and civilization as well as the study of the lan- guage make up the Elba High School French Club. Ev- ery spring, members plan an exhibit and skit, and pre- pare to attend the annual French Club Convention held at the University of Alabama. It was formed to provide inter- ested students with the op- portunity to be a part of a dramatic production, which requires both indi- vidual and group effort. Members of the club plan to present one play and several variety shows for their own enjoyment and satisfaction as well as for the entertainment of the student body. Science Club Members of the Science Club are those students who have an active interest in the many areas of science. Through participa- tion in this club, members are able to add to their sci- entific knowledge and to make progress toward practical application of this knowledge. Meetings of the Science Club often feature infor- mative talks by resource people from different science-connected voca- tions. Vocational Industrial Clubs of America is an organiza- tion for youth enrolled in vocational trade and industrial éducation. VICA is one of the fastest growing youth or- ganizations in America. It is very popular with young people and has been very successful in developing leadership in the field of industry and skilled trades. In its first year, the Elba Chapter of VICA set several records in the annual Skills Contest in District com- petition winning first place in Automechanics and Ma- chine Drafting, second place in Arc Welding and MIG and TIG Welding, and third place in Cosmetology. The Automechanics also won second place in the state competition. Through these and other activities, VICA members are made aware of the responsibilities as well as the opportunities presented in the vocational field. Diane Pope and Mark Jacobs were honored by their fellow members by being selected as Mr. and Miss V.I.C.A. for the school year 1973- 1974. . to be more than just a band. . . reer errr Y = O = D 2 = = é. v ie) fe) = ion . t ina determ 1973-1974 , in Tigers | 4 ‘ The Elba High School Marching Tigers are the largest single organization in the school, and are still growing. In addition, the Marching Tigers may just possibly be the group with the widest reaching influence. In the spring of 1973, the band sponsored Band Day at the National Guard Armory, dedicated solely to rais- ing funds to attend the Fiesta of Five Flags in Pensacola, Florida. Band Day included barbeque sales and all-day concerts by the band, along with full radio coverage. Thanks to the people of Elba, the band netted over two thousand dollars just in donations. Despite warning from other state bands, the March- ing Tigers made a fantastic showing in Pensacola. From three parades and a marching contest, the band brought home five trophies with the drum majors get- ting two first place trophies and one first place trophy. This past summer was spent in preparation for foot- ball season, and when school started, all those hours of practice paid off. In the ten ball games in which the band marched, moments of elation and satisfaction were felt by everyone. And who could ever forget those wild bus trips? One of the highlights (or lowlights, depending on the way one looks at it) was the trip nineteen band mem- bers made to Gadsden to observe the Mid-South Marching Band Contest. Although the group had planned to return the same day they left, a storm re- sembling the Genesis flood caused them to be stranded overnight. The band spent one weekend in Ft. Walton, Florida, at the Miracle Strip Marching Contest. This incredible trip was made possible by subscription sales for the Elba News. At this contest, the band won Superi or rat- ings in all four catergories: band, majorettes, color guard, and drum majors. Once more, Mr. Maddox led the Marching Tigers to glory In the Troy State Appreciation Day parade, the Tigers marched and returned the next Saturday for the South- eastern States Marching Band Festival, the toughest contest the band attended. At this contest the band it- self received three Superior ratings and the three aux- illary units all received ratings of Excellent. The Marching Tigers remained busy, for the biggest and best band dance ever came December 9, with Jo Ann Cannon and lavish decorations taking top honors. The band, Americana (formerly the Harvy Wallbanger Horn Band!), was the best ever to grace Elba’s city limits. The concert band, often overlooked but equally im- portant, participated in concerts this year. Part of this group, the symphonic band, went to District Contest in Andalusia for competition against themselves and others. It is a miracle of sociology that over 120 students from widely differing backgrounds can almost live to- gether and coexist, learning and at the same time hav- ing a ball. Probably no other organization can boast this. Despite the usual little disagreements that arise, the Marching Tigers are bonded by a common love—the love of music, marching, and enjoying themselves. These young ladies have varied interests and a wide range of goals, but they share a common desire to be a perfect homemaker—not just a housewife. To be a homemaker is to provide love and under- standing as well as hard work and sacrifice to the family. Under the supervision of Mrs. Mary Young and Mrs. Sylvia Terrell, the Elba Chapter has undertaken many projects to help build a better organization and a better community. _. . We face the future with warm courage and high hope’. = FHA officers Bev Cox, Kathy Bowers, Judy Lee, Brenda Spann, Paula Taylor, and Gena Kendrick support the initiation theme “Accent on Career Planning.” Capt. Donald Dunaway, Capt. Mike Bush, 1st Lt. Joe Morrow, 2nd Lt. Deborah Boutwell, Lt. Col. Earl Perry JROTC The Junior ROTC program at Elba High School is part of a national program authorized by law, enacted by Congress, and conducted by the Department of the Army in cooperation with the Elba City School Board in response to needs expressed by the people of this community. Army JROTC is an elective instructional program for 14 to 18 years old students. JROTC at Elba is offered as Military training | (MT-I), Military training I] (MT-II), and Military training Ill (MT-IIIl). Each course requires a min- imum of 96 hours instruction per year. The JROTC pro- gram is an excellent vehicle for demonstrating practical application of leadership and citizenship taught in many other high school courses, and, as such, will be in- tegrated, insofar as possible, into the overall curriculm. One unit credit is given for each military training course. No service obligation is incurred by participation. Ad- vanced placement in college ROTC and advanced in- listed rank for initial entry into military service is authorized. Desired learning outcomes for JROTC foster a strong sense of integrity, responsibility, and respect for other persons; increased insight into ethical values and prin- ciples; the ability to live and work cooperatively with others; and a respect for constituted authority. Development of leadership potential and an appre- ciation of educational and vocational opportunities af- fored by these United States is an important aspect of JROTC program of instruction. JROTC at Elba High School is a unique program in that it is run for and by the cadets. McCollough, Advisor. Business Manager Jack Brunson When members of the 1974 Elbala Staff were selected, none of us had any idea of the amount of work that would be necessary to pro- duce a good yearbook. The worry, the pressure, the responsibility . . . a year ago, we would not have believed it. Now we know. In the early stages of planning, we decided to make this book the best one that Elba High School had ever had. We set to work studying other yearbooks and began to formulate ideas to make our book a relevant one that expressed the feelings and ideas of the students of 74. The work officially began as we started to lay down our ideas into the first pages of the book. During our planning period, we held bull sessions to sound out suggestions and get everyone’s point of view. Bit by bit, piece by piece, something definite began to form. We worked, reworked, wrote, rewrote, sweated, worried, and came up with our first major accomplishment: The first sixteen pages. Sighs of joy and pride arose from the staff as we sent off that first shipment to the printer. One obstacle was behind us. After that, the editors and staffs worked steadily to produce the re- mainder of the book. Ideas came more easily as we became accus- tomed to our jobs. We began to enjoy our task. What were headaches before became simple jobs. The tension eased, but did not subside. Looming ominously ahead was our final deadline. But with lots of work and a little luck, we came up with something we are very proud of: The 1974 Elbala. We present it as a tribute to our class and our school. ans tree ky tees Hie ag b ot ois et aes Si of P ae 2 _ ny - oy he Ste To have good coverage on school activities, you must have good activities editors. Judy Lee and Jim Williams were well suited for their task. They worked long and hard on the open- ing pages of the book--giving ideas, making suggestions, doing their part to make the yearbook a good one. The great amount of work that goes into making a yearbook is useless unless there are people who want to buy the book. The sales staff had the responsibility of selling the Elbala to the students and the city. Theirs was not an easy job, for money was low among students, and the price of the book had been increased. But the staff overcame those obstacles and sold the quota of books necessary to print the yearbook. With a little determination, the sky is the limit. Debbie Padgett was selected as treasurer of the Elbala because of her experience with money and figures. Through her hands passed all the money that was required to make this yearbook, the 1974 Elbala, a treasure in the years to come. For any yearbook, a large sum of money must be raised in addition to the money re- ceived from the sale of the book. The Elbala Staff accomplishes this through advertising. The extra funds were raised in this way by the Advertising Staff. Theirs was a job of great im- portance, for without money, there can be no book. Under the direction of the advertising managers, Melanie Carnley and David Ken- nedy, (left), the staff went to the local mer- chants to ask their help and support in the last united effort of this Senior Class. Paula Taylor and Alice Brunson were faced with the challenge of making an ordinarily dull organizations section into an inter- esting and informative one. Pictures had to be made, faces matched with names, copy written, and lay-outs drawn. Working together, they came up with a section to be proud of. The sports section of the Elbala is a very im- portant one for a large part of the student body. Mark Jacobs and Mike McGuire were chosen as the editors to assure a section with all the facts and faces combined to show the tension and ex- citement sports bring. A beautiful features section graces the pages of any year- book. Beverly Cox and Kathy Bowers were selected as fea- tures editors because of their ability and willingness to work. With a lot of imagina- tion and a little hard work, their section proved as lovely as the beauties featured within. yd The nine classes editors had, perhaps, the biggest job of all. They had to get class rolls from all grades, match names with faces, alphabetize the pictures, and get ev- erything ready for final shipment. The work was dull and time-consuming, but had to be done. These editors did a fine job with their section. apy = Classes Editors Above: David Head, Babs Bruce, Billye Scott, Cyndi Maddox, Judy Kayron Hudson, Rhonda Morrow, Becky Smart, Deborah Boutwell, Nancy Taylor. From mere children, we have become mature individuals by accepting the responsibility to make the most of our world. We look at the future brightly, for it belongs to us. These long years have prepared us for the life we ex- pect to lead in an adult world. Our lives will be different now; some will go to college, others will marry, still oth- ers will settle into jobs, but we will forever be alike in the experiences we have shared together at Elba High School. The Class of ’74 is blessed with more than its share of people with ability and talent. Among us are leaders, vocalists, hard workers, outstanding scholars, speakers, athletes, and people with unlimited imagination and in- genuity. Putting aside modesty, we leave classes behind us with some fantastic accomplishments to surpass, such as our Junior magazine sale, our Prom, and finally, our yearbook. Planning and working together on them has broadened our education and increased our experiences. Here at Elba High School, we have gained not only a good education, but something else as well; we have learned to be ourselves, each as important as the other, and to be proud of being the way we are. For the guid- ance and the love, we are grateful to God, the faculty, our friends, and our parents. We leave this school, but with a special sadness. We know that we are also leaving behind twelve years of our lives. Some of the friends we have made will grow up and forget us, but the love we have known, the hap- piness we have shared, will never be forgotten. Neither time nor distance can take away from us those precious memories of the years we spent together at Elba High School. Cherrie Clay was selected as the 1974 D. A. R. Well, we may have gone about it in a completely unorthodox manner, but at least it’s kept us off the streets and busy. Our first business of the year was to order our class rings. It was only natural for some, but a few of us didn’t even realize we were really Juniors and nearly went into a panic about it. That early in the year we still thought that we were Sophomores, that the Seniors were still Juniors, and where the heck were the REAL Seniors?! There seemed to be an awful lot of anxiety in ordering, at least, that’s what we thought. As it turned out, waiting for them to come in was even worse. But after all the right rings were connected to all the right hands, it suddenly seemed worthwhile. For the Homecoming Parade at the end of the foot- ball season we decided to make our float the best one yet. Painstakingly we went to work to make our float funny and to the point, while trying to keep within the assigned limitations. It took a lot of time, effort, sore fingers, and chicken-wire, but we were more than pleased with the finished product—a gigantic toilet with the words “Flush ‘em Tigers” emblazoned across a roll of paper. We were very proud of our float and our feel- ings were badly hurt when we did not take first place, but we were Tigers and tigers are cats and cats have nine lives, so between tears we decided we still had a few to go. An awful lot happened during our Junior year be- cause we tried. We participated in the band as well as in sports and the newly formed Drama Club. All of Elba’s majorettes and both her drum majors have been Juniors this year. Many flashy colorguard members and noisier band members have been part of the Junior class. Not to mention some of her star football, basket- ball and baseball players. All have been Juniors and all have been gr-r-reat! In all, we Juniors have done many things this year. For the most part we’ve even had fun. Enough fun that next year we will more than likely STILL be looking for the “real” Seniors! 85 Catherine Carpenter Tom Compton Ronald Clark Cindy Coon Sandra Clark Tommy Cooper Renethia Coleman Theresa Crook Willard Coleman Ronnie Culver Clive Collier Brenda Daniels Teresa Brown Richard Brunson Billy Bryan Diane Bryan Jane Bryan Renita Bozeman Donna Britt Betty Brooks Eddie Brown Wendy Anderson Teddy Barnes Wilma Anderson Kathy Berry Linda Askew Ricky Bowers Rhonda Danford Faye Davis John Davis Joy Davis Beth Dahlke Lynn Donaldson Mark Donaldson Cornelia Duncan Fran English Vann English Steve Falls Ricky Farris Carolyn Flowers Larry Folmar R. His gentle personality and concern for all per- sons made him one of the wonder- ful people of Elba High School. His person is gone now, but the memories Paul left with others will always remain—his easy laugh, his understanding, his particular way with people. We have not lost him, but gained him in a new way—in our hearts and minds, where he will be forever implanted. “Where Friendliness Prevails” i iiee | Use Our Drive-in-Windows Night Depository Auto Loans ELBA Checking Accounts Saving Accounts EXC HAN G FE Life Insurance Loans Commercial Loans Safe Deposit Boxes Personal Loans Christmas Club Complete Customer Checking Phone 897-2291 West Buford Elba, Alabama b Sinan Bok She —— PEOPLES BANK Fil 2 NEW BROCKTON BRANCH Elba and New Brockton Congratulates the Seniors of ELBA HIGH SCHOOL and Extends to them, “Best Wishes” as they face their future.
