In fact, the faculty is so much a part of our school life that we frequently become very closely associated with a teacher and de- velop binding ties. We are proud to dedicate the 1969 Elbala to such a teacher. She is never wasting time. Her industry amazes us, and every job she undertakes is done with great competence. Some of us have worked with her. Some of us have been advised by her. Most of us have been students in her classes. Some of us have known just her smile and her friendly manner. Goethe once said that a good teacher is one who stirs our hearts while increasing our knowledge. In the short time she has been in our school, she has turned a course of instruction into a course of inspiration. What she has given us cannot be lost with the years. ATHLETICS ELBA TIGERS mie AK Os ta Coach Leon Akins is a graduate of Atmore High School and the University of Southern Mississippi. Upon graduation in 1962, he served three years as Assistant Coach at University Military School in Mobile. His next position was in Andalusia where he was Assistant Coach for two years. In 1967, Coach Akins joined the Tigers as Head Coach. Fol- lowing a remarkable first year at Elba, he received the honor of coaching the South team in the 1968 State High School All-Star game. As Head Coach, he guided his team to a convincing victory. This year has been another remarkable and successful one. Football Game by Game The Tigers traveled to Brantley for the season opener. Combining offense and defense in a near perfect fashion, the Tigers were easy victors in this one. Final score: Elba 34, Brantley 0. The following week was perhaps as sound a game as could be played by Elba against a team such as Luverne. Stopping the heralded ball control of Luverne was the order of the night, and the Tigers rose to the occasion. The offense sputtered at times, but it took advantage of big opportunities. Final score: Elba 14, Luverne 7. The first home game of the season was a battle of unbeaten powerhouses in Tiger Stadium. A slight underdog going into the game, the Tigers showed a devastating ground game and prevailed in a thrilling battle of defenses. Final score: Elba 7, Opp 6. In the fourth game of the season, the hometown fans received thrill after thrill as the Tigers demol- ished the Hartford Bulldogs. A dazzling aerial cir- cus and a rugged defense were more than enough to keep the Tigers in the undefeated ranks. Final score: Elba 47, Hartford, 6. Next, the Tigers journeyed to Brundidge to take on the Pike County High School Bulldogs. Staying with the basic strategy points, Elba moved the pig- skin almost at will and made very few mistakes. The result was a convincing victory over a well- coached but out-manned team. Final score: Elba 30, Brundidge 0. A capacity crowd and a most enthused student body watched and roared as Elba survived beauti- fully the stiffest test thus far in the aging season. Even though the Tigers were unbeaten, they found themselves a six to ten point underdog in Tiger Sta- dium against the annual rival Enterprise Wildcats. After a nip and tuck first half, superb coaching and play execution found the few weak points in a very much underrated Enterprise defense. The Tiger defense was outstanding throughout the af- fair, and happiness prevailed as Elba remained un- ef hixk Chat- 2408 defeated. Final score: Elba Enterprise 6. Defeat was tasted for the first time on Home- coming night at the hands of the Samson Tigers. Although hampered by minor injuries to key play- ers, nO excuses could be made. It just was not the night for the home team as Samson took advantage of many opportunities and pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season. Final score: Elba 13, Samson 21. The Tigers got back on the winning trail in Geneva at the expense of a crew of very scrappy Panthers. Elba featured a brilliant running game and a sufficient passing attack while the defense held Geneva at bay throughout the game. Final score: Elba 20, Geneva 7. Back at home again against the Andalusia Bull- dogs, the Tigers showed their best offensive attack of the season. After taking a quick lead, Elba set- tled down to a conservative offense. Many players had a chance to get valuable experience during this scrap. The Tigers moved the ball at will, and this, together with an extremely stingy defense, pro- duced pleasing results. Final score: Elba 34, Andy 0. After turning down an invitation to the Peanut Bowl in Dothan in favor of a possible playoff berth, the Tigers traveled to Troy to take on the Trojans. In a pressure-packed contest in Memorial Stadium, the Tigers got off to a bad start, and were never able to overcome a quick Trojan lead.
