For the third time in four years Ela's Bears have cap- tured the basketball championship of the Northwest Conference. Under the guidance of Coach Lehmann the Bears won twelve out of fourteen conference games and eighteen out of twenty-three games all season. Their victory record may even have been better if we hadn't lost Robert Mertes, six-foot four forward, to Waukegan. The Bears played some of their best ball during the Christmas holidays when they won a four-team tournament at Zion-Benton. Ela reached the finals of the district tourn- ament at Wauconda with preliminary victories over Northbrook and Barrington. Lake Forestg a power- house of the Northeast Conference, trounced the Bears in the final game. Orville Grever, the team's most valuable player, and William Seemann were the one-two scor- ing punch of the Bears. Bob Littfin, winner of the free-throw trophy, and David Snetsinger wer stars on defense. The basketball players were honored at the Athletic Banquet sponsored by the Lions Club on March ll, 1947. Although Ela will lose five men from this year's varsity, it is looking forward to a most successful season again next year. X Z' V 15: '- Um ,- L 'lhf'a f., ' ', MNA!!! . . . 1, . jg. rxl' , .
