As the school year of 1953-54 draws to a close sounds of fare- well ring out. Some will return, some will not, but each will re- member and cherish the happy times and friendships they have shared. This book for 1953-54 has been made to keep alive those cherished memories that carry their indelible brand upon our minds and within our hearts. Dedication The faculty and the students of the El Reno High School wish to unite in thanking the members of the Board of Education who have served so faithfully in making our school better and stronger every year. We know that they work without pay, and that they give their time and their effort in our behalf because they believe that in so doing, they will help us to develop into strong men and women. We appreciate them because of their interest in us and our welfare. The men whose pictures appear on this page have composed our Board of Education this year. They are all our friends. Some of them we have known longer than others, but we appreciate everyone of them. They have high ideals of citizenship, and they want the best of education for all of us. we are proud of our high school and of the part these men have had in making it great. Mr. Burge, President of the Board, has served since 1942. Mr. Lucus, Vice-President, became a member in 1941. Mr. Fogg has served since 1946 and Mr. Barrett and Mr. Gleason became members in 1953. They need no introduction to our student body or to our city as a whole, but they do merit the sincere thanks and deep appreciation of everyone. Board of Education Ifflr. J. 711. IQ53 Summary The El Reno Indians were faced with a terrific rebuilding job at the beginning of the 1953 season. Gone from the 1952 powerhouse were ten regulars, with halfback Jim Archer the lone holdover starter. After ten days of training at their Fort Reno football camp, the Tribe successfully opened the season with an 18-0 victory over Watonga. They followed suit the next week with a shutout 13-0 win over Perry. The Tribe picked up its third triumph by downing Clinton 21-0. Picking up steam, the Indians outraced Northeast of Oklahoma City 39-19 the following week. The Warriors posted their first conference win and fifth seasonal victory with a narrow 13-9 squeak past Chickasha. Next week found the Tribe bowing to a strong Duncan team by the tune of 27-0. Failing to find the comeback trail, the Indians were outfought by Putnam City and fell 27-6 to the keyed-up Pirates. Next on the list came Edmond and the Tribe rebounded with a sound 41-12 victory. The Warriors then journeyed to Ardmore to tangle with the Tigers in a Boomer Conference clash. The Ardmore unit crushed El Reno’s chance for the conference crown with a runaway 60-7 victory. The Indians lost their fourth game of the season as the Enid Plainsmen eked out a 15-14 win the following week on Plainsmen Field. Thanksgiving day found El Reno engaging the powerful Lawton Wolverines in a game that previously had been postponed because of rain. Exhibiting the brand of ball that they had been capable of playing all season, the Tribe upended the Wolverines 21-14. The Indians finished second in conference play and boasted an impressive 7-4 seasonal record. Personal honors went to five outstanding seniors who landed a position on the All-Conference team. This quintet con- sists of Dave Ratliff, Jim Archer, Wayne Willis, Earl Johnson, and Don Bomemann. Johnson also landed a spot on the All- Southern team and was named to the Daily Oklahoman’s All-State squad. —IP lit rs, 6arolyn Turk Squaw Kfliss Shirley Jarmgi Independent p W -4m « HViss Patricia Senn Freshman Boomer Qonference Go- itlists IHIHHI From left to right are Coach Jenks Simmons, James Archer, David Ratliff, Jesse Nordman, Jimmy Simmons, Bill Bruce, Wendell Dozier, Tommy Moore, Jack Slaughter, Earl Johnson, Wayne Willis and Kendall Hale. The 1953-54 basketball season resulted in another highly successful year. The Tribe rang up an impressive seasonal record of 18 wins and 3 losses before bowing to Ponca City, 48-47, in a first round regional tournament game at Enid. Seven of these 18 wins came at the expense of conference teams and handed El Reno its tenth con- secutive Boomer Conference title. The Tribe lost one league battle, this being a 69-55 pounding at the hands of Chickasha who shared the crown with the Indians. Playing their last season in the small EHS gymnasium before moving into the new field house next year, the Tribe withstood all opponent attacks and for the second straight year boasted a perfect record at home. This feat was not done with ease, however, as the Warriors were closely pressed on several occasions before eking out a victory. The first close one was a last second 35-34 victory over Capitol Hill. Two free shots pitched in after the clock had run out gave the Tribe a 51-49 triumph over Chickasha. The Indians were forced into an overtime before finally subduing the determined Duncan Demons, 40-38. Besides making off with the Boomer conference bunting, the Tribe was ranked as the state's fourth ranked AA squad. They also took third place in the pre-season Invitational Tournament held at Enid. From the hills of the Balkans, it is possible to go in one direction to the Near East and in the opposite direction to Western Europe. Western Civilization covers the regions of the earth to which the culture of classical Greece and Rome was spread. The Western Hemisphere includes the Americas. The New Englander thinks of going west to Ohio. The Ohioan speaks of out west in Kansas. In Kansas, it is out to the west coast. The Californian consideis transportation to Hawaii and the Southwest Pacific. Go slightly farther in the same direction and west becomes the Far East. To the Oklahoman and the people of the middle-western plains out west is the place where every man, woman and child can set foot on the grass of mother earth every day. It is a place where people smile because they like their fellowman. People are really neighbors to the friends next door, and each has a sympathetic interest in the other’s pleasures and sorrows. All have time to exchange a friendly greeting with anyone they chance to meet. Funds are readily raised to assist the needy and the unfortunate. Competitors truly enjoy common fellowship in the church, in the lodge, and in the civic club. The dignity of a human being is the greatest thing on earth—out where it is west. Best Looking Jim Davxson Chn t°n en sJ£St The lZoundup -----SEPTEMBER------- Well, pardner, the old school-house doors have opened, and it’s high time we all got back in to the swing of studies and school activities. The first noticeable difference from previous years is the addition of a Freshman Orientation Class conducted by Mr. Porter. It seems to be a rather unusual course with many interesting features and a lot of good points full of common sense. After corralling all the student for the first meeting, we elected these first semester officers: President, Walter Barrett; Vice-President, Cecil Carel; Secretary, Corinna Caster; Treasurer, Gene Gallagher, and Reporter, Pat Murphy. Botany class took off for the wide open spaces of Kiwanis Park at a full gallop. And, incidentally, what were David and his group doing before the rest of us arrived upon the scene? We wonder! ----OCTOBER-------- RAIN—it came at long last and seemed as though it might last forever, especially on the pleasant, but muddy, trek through the range at Fort Reno. Once again the Botany fiends were studying the native grasses of Oklahoma. What difference does rain make to the fun-lovin'? members of E.J.C.? It makes absolutely none, as proved by the delightful, although rather damp, wein- erroast held at Lake Overholser on the 15th. The goblins’ll get ya’—and they almost did, too, as the Hallowe’en party progressed. By the way, who were the two silent, mysterious strangers in our midst? (They couldn’t have been Shirleen Leigh- ton and Leona Biller, could they?) There were such dignitaries as General Scott, usually known as Jerry, and even a couple of real gone hep-cats. Entertain- ments? It was home-grown, of course. Jane Bailey’s pantomine kept us all guessing and later Corky Wilson and Tom Cash gave us an evening of home- spun western music. The dancing and refreshments were quite enjoyable, too. ---NOVEMBER-------- Lucky Jane! She managed to stay home while the Botany class came to her as we ventured fear- lessly forward to Concho in order to study the gypsum outcropping and its effect on plant life. Now is the time for all good men, and women too, to start writing those dreaded term paoers! Anyone care for some cooked chlorophyll? This is the theme of Botany class the«e days. Going Norman way? We all may have begun by this time to think we are. but onlv Mr. Durham's psychology class rolled along to Central State hospital. It seemed for awhile as thouah Dale might be lost, but after returning home and counting noses, all were present, including Dale. ---DECEMBER-------- Twenty-one — twenty — nineteen shopping days until Christmas. Everyone, but EVERYONE, is writ- ing furiously on their term papers to get them done before the whirl of Christmas Holidays. And none too soon the Holidays came. Whew! What do you think of at Christmastime? By some odd chance we guessed that you thought of parties. We did, too. So we had the annual get- together of College students from El Reno on the 26th. Of course, the plans were started much earlier, and between Dean Ray and Reverend Bergner, we. the hosts, were kept busily hopping to and fro. Sure was nice, though, to see old friends and meet some new ones. ---JANUARY--------- Was that the pitter-patter of feet through the halls again? Yes, we have returned thoroughly rest- ed and relaxed to face the last minute rush of study before the awe-inspiring semester exams. Much to our regret some old classmates were no longer with us. They were Tom Cash, Kenneth Boevers, Ernest Murray, Tom Fahey and Corky Wilson. However, to compensate for their loss, we found new faces in our midst. Jim Christensen, William Cranfill, Scott Harrison, Bob Abel, Homer Blackwell, Bill Gustafson Tommy Tennery. Mrs. Ruby Thorp, Margaret Burgess and Christine Dalton joined us at mid-term. A new semester brings forth a new selection of officers. After all preliminaries, those chosen were: President, Larry Masters; Vice-President, Dale Rogers; Secretary, Martha Hurst and Treasurer, Carl Krauter. In this month the usual round of snow-balls was thrown, but luckily, no new enemies were made. ----FEBRUARY-------- “Roses are red, Violets arc blue. We know the rest, and so do you.” “Lulubelle, Ah’m just a shy cowpoke,” says Tex, holding a heart-shaped box of candy behind him, “but Ah’d shore be proud if you’d be my Valentine.” Pardon the western accent, but part of Miss Witcher’s English Composition class has been reading Green Grow the Lilacs, starring our local stars, Ado Annie Biller, and Curley Knox, while the rest has been gallavantin’ around, selling ads. The over all results were pretty good, even if our speech has gained a slight western flavor. We have just begun another play Our Town, and all of a sudden February, the heart and flower month is over. Where did it go so quickly? -----MARCH------- Shades of Pluto! ’Tis the month of shamrocks and the wearin’ ’o the green! And in honor of this happy occasion. Miss Witcher’s English class had a party! Leona Biller brought a cake iced with green and cokes were served. It was a great delight for all. This seems to be the month of those wonderful birthdays created by the crafty wits of E. J. C. Wonder why? But, of course it brings results—Re- sults? Parties, of course! The Windy Month got off to a slow start, but undeniably, Spring is here! ---APRIL------- Umm! Warm weather and lazy days! That old spring fever has us in his grip, but who cares to escape? Not us, anyway! Wouldn’t a picnic, wiener roast, hayrack ride or spring party hit the spot? You bet it would! So on the 8th we all met and rode out to Gholston’s farm for a combined picnic and weiner roast EVERYONE had a simply marvelous time. ---may------- ossh! Be quiet! I have to study!”—“You mean you don’t know why? This is the last month of school and there are a dozen term papers to be written and handed in and it seems that there must be at least a hundred finals to pass. Oh, happy days! ?” That’s our sad, sad story this month. But all is not so grim, for we have our long summer vacations before us. Three cheers, and more, too! We shall long remember this year at EJ.C. We shall remember the parties, the work, the long hours of study and the trip, although it took us longer to decide where to go than it did to go there and come back home. Part of the class wanted to go to New Orleans, some wanted to go to Rockaway Beach and others wanted to spend some time on the shores of Lake Texoma. Even though the decision was hard to make, we all had a truly unforgettable time. — 7 ' u-ycZ y st . £z 2s 7t cM- ,l nr -wwi % v V 1 Stf ° c%Z r L S jfJ . c fKL— t -OC - £6 C M- cig LjAc) .j-u) j y 2 0 A J ' - V 4V a, VVV N - Iriri £fVfei[ % m v- y- V s O' Zn-aS 0 tMXJ ° s V v4 V - 1 ' y cq (? v t v •Uii f' i- -CocL y L4L.jl T ' Z UL- + - A4 S vr 01 4 £ «, ..„. - ?u A . 7 ‘ ' y..
