(Character, - ' (Citizenship, linoHtleftge, «tttit Chills I X? EPUESENT the objectives of an education in El Reno High School. A foundation for character building can be found in the classrooms and on the campus of this school. In the outlined studies and activities there is afforded an organized system of personal development of character, mind, and body, both in the curricular and extra-curricular educational programs. Citizenship training enters into the educational program through both the classroom and outside activities. I he individual leader is taught to adjust himself to the group, thus enriching the advantages of both. I his same citizenship training will later enable the student to adapt himself, in his vocation, to the civic and social life of the community in which he may live. Not all knowledge is found under the covers of books. Some of the most valuable knowledge that can be gained during four years of high school education is found, perhaps, in the association of the individual with classmates and teachers, the coming in contact with their ideas and ideals. Without this knowledge, an education could not be considered complete nor could one be said to possess “true” knowledge. 1 hrough the many types of courses which are offered in this school, under supervised instruction, the student is allowed an opportunity to develop the particular talents which he may possess, thus learning to become skillful in his vocational choice. This practical skill is not the only skill which the student has developed upon the completion of his education, but he has also learned to imagine, leason, create, and “do , all of which play an important part in living. In the 19.18 BOOMER we are preserving, through word and picture, a record of El Reno High Schools progress during the 1937-38 school year, both in the curricular and extra-curricular programs, towards the attainment of the objectives which are here set forth. Dedication During the dozen years we have been engaged in the pursuit of our present educational goal—graduation from high school—no group has loved us, provided for us, guided us, and sacrificed time, energy, and effort for us like those who are nearest our hearts, our parents. Heie we acknowledge their deep interest in the educational progress and vital success of their sons and daughters, the seniors of 1938, and do cheerfully and whole-heartedly dedi- cate this volume of the El Reno High School BOOMER to our parents, whom we love and respect. 1 ’ T T 7 T 7 1 THE ADMINISTRATION For a Period of forty-five years, the citizens of this community have been holding high the torch of knowledge for their boys and girls. As the years have passed, they have con- stantly striven to keep the educational system modern and up-to-date. Today, they can point with pride to El Reno High School, with its efficient equipment and excellent corps of offi- cials and instructors. Many improvements have been made in the educational plant during the past few years. A spacious, sound-proof band room has been provided at the high school, eliminating the need of the band’s rehearsing some two blocks from the building. The vocal music department, which was formerly located in a small, inconvenient room, has been moved to larger and better quarters. The stage in the auditorium is admitted to be one of the best high school stages in the state, both in equipment and beauty. Since the build- ing of this beautiful stage last year, it has been in constant use, with some of the city’s better programs be- ing presented on it. The public address system, at Principal Walter P. Marsh’s suggestion, has been put to many practical uses, one being a student broadcast which is given each day by a student in the creative writing class. During last summer, a new lighting system was installed in the north wing of the building, and plans for a new and complete lighting system for the entire building have been made. The typing department is now located in larger quarters, thus accommodating the great increase in the commercial classes, some of which exceed fifty students per class. The science department has been supplied with a great amount of new and modern equipment in order to make it one of the best equipped high school laboratories in the state. Plans are being made for the purchasing of more equipment for the biology, chemistry, and physics classes for the coming year. Tenta- tive plans for the enlarging and combining of the science laboratories for next year are also being considered. (3)
