During her ju- nior year Laura was enrolled in a ceramics class and she became in- terested in ceramics. Laura began making pinch pots, coil pots and vases. A friend had a kiln that was not in use and thought I would appreciate the results of using itj' said Laura. Since last year Laura has made various mugs, planters, ash trays and other ceramic ob- jects. 30 Variety His Heart Is In His Engine ' Inspired by the mechanical tal- ents of his two uncles who own automotive mechanic shops in Mexico City, Johnny Berumen wants likewise to own a shop. After Johnny graduates next year from Technical Center and El Paso High, he plans to obtain a one- year degree from a school of auto and diesel mechanics in Phoenix, Arizona. Flip Over Kim Strass 4 A future in international gym- nastics competition and a spot in the 1980 Olympics are part of Kim Strauss' goals after only four years of training. When freshman Kim, was ten years-old she enrolled in a two-week summer gymnastics pro- gram at the Y.W.C.A. Kim was a fast learner and decided to try out for the Sun City gymnastics team. She made the team when she was twelve and since then she has com- peted throughout the Southwest and has earned the reputation as being one of the best gymnasts in the state. A member of the Sun- beams Gymnastic Club, Kim works out daily from 6:30 to 9 p.m. This past November Kim compet- ed in the Phillips '66 Bartlesville Invitational Meet where, from a field of 73 gymnasts, she captured first place on the balance beam and second best all around gym- nast.
