Movies such as, The Omen, A Star is Born, All The Presi- dents Men, and King Kong were hits among El Paso High stu- dents. All the Presidents Men received top awards from the New York Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics, which awarded the movie picture of the year. Taxi Driver, a movie deal- ing with intense violence and Network, a movie about the in- fluence of television on society, were also two award-winning films. Roots, a novel made for TV, was the most watched television series of all time. It was based on Alex Haley's non-fiction novel, Roots, and displayed a realistic portrayal of negro slavery. Home Box Office KHBOJ a pay television network which features uninter- rupted movies less than a year old, foreign films, sports, specials, and children's films was another form of entertainment offered, Barbra Streisand, who received critical acclaim for her perfor- mance in A Star is Born, was 22 Variety HLDERNESS AMEX able to produce another top-ten musical hit. The theme from A Star is Born, Evergreen, was chosen best song of the year by the Golden Globe Academy. According to the Cashbox Magazine's nation- wide survey, other top-ten hits of the year were Tonight's the Night, Rod Stewart, You Don't Have To Be A Star, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Leo Sayers, Car Wash, Rose Royce, and Love Me, Yvonne Elliman. Top-ten albums included Hotel California, The Eagles, Wings Over America, Paul McCartney and Wings, Frampton Comes Alive, Peter Frampton, A Night On The Town, Rod Stewart, and A New World Record, Electric Light Orchestra. Musical groups who payed a vis- it to El Paso were The Eagles, Blue Oyster Colt, Bob Seger and The Electric Light Orchestra. A WL Elisabeth Hagen Likes Contrast Elisabeth Haga was a foreign ex- change student who attended El Paso High School during the 1976-77 school year. Elisabeth, who came from Oslo Norway, was very impressed by the southwestern surroundings she en- countered in El Paso. The reason I like El Paso so much is because the climate and environment are com- pletely different from Oslo, she said. In her spare time she cross country skiis, paints and jogs along the streets of Mission Hills. Variety 2
