The El Paso High School Class Of 1979 Presents “The Cometeer” k. M Best Wishes Mrs. Hankey We, the Senior Class of 1979, would like to express our thanks for everything you have done for us in the past four years. Being an honorary GAA member, you assisted with the club’s activities, from bowling to dodgeball. You advised our school newspaper staff, making the “Comet Comments” a successful publication. Most of all, you gave your time to be our junior class sponsor. We could always depend on you to help us with our class stand or other money-making projects. Then there was our prom ... that special evening we won t forget. You helped make it special because you made sure that details from renting a room in the ISU Union - to having a centerpiece for each table were not forgotten. As a teacher, you gained the respect of your students. You always looked for the best in others and encouraged them to develop their given talents. With much affection and sincere grati- tude. we dedicate this yearbook to you. Many of the Comets had outstanding seasons. Our seniors will be sorely missed next year, but we know an eager crop of juniors and sophomores will ably carry the tradition of El Paso forward. The Eureka win and the homecoming victory over Flana- gan were indeed highlights of the year. Our heartbreaking loss to Chenoa, while playing our best game of the year will also be remem- bered as one of the highlights of the 1978 sea- son. Overall it was an interesting year with plenty of action, hard work, smiles, and tears. A salute to our athletes, coaches, parents, and friends for supporting the Comets! This year’s squad had a record of 14 wins and 12 losses. Highlights of the year were a third place finish in the conference and a third place finish in the county tournament. Greg Sturm and Tom Kearfott became the two leading scorers in school history along with being four year letter- men. Tom was also selected most valuable by his teammates. Greg and Doug Carley were selected to the second all-conference team. Other senior letterwinners were Jon Pinkham, Brad Hayslette, Greg Wilkey, and Dennis Ludwig. Returning junior letterwinners are starting point guard Marty Heller, part-time starting center Tony Turner, plus Greg Hunsaker, Mitch Fever, and Tom Armstrong. These five along with some excellent sophomores should con- tinue to make the Comets competitive in the tough Midstate Conference. The 1978-79 El Paso High School band began its performing season by marching in the annual Corn Festi- val parade. During the football sea- son, the band performed at the four home games as well as the Homecom- ing parade. The pep band provided the entertainment during the home basketball games. The concert season began with the Christmas concert. In March, the band played a program for Centen- nial Grade School. In April, we took part in the I.H.S.A. band contest and took a two-day tour to Chicago. The season climaxed with the spring con- cert in May. The jazz band was also active; playing on tour, for the Kiwa- nis Club, and several other local programs. I feel that the band improved a great deal over the course of the year. We played a wide variety of musical styles and had the opportunity of playing for several different audiences. Brian was third in state at 105 lbs. I was extremely pleased with the way our young wrestlers performed near the end of the season. We wrestled with only two seniors during the year, and the rest of the team had one year of experience or less. Many individuals had outstanding performances. The two mile relay, consisting of Jim Barker, Chuck Feeney, Landis Loewen, and Greg Hunsaker, set a new record. Jon Pinkham also set a new record in the 220 yard dash, running the curve in 22.95 at the state meet. Injuries took their toll among Comet standouts this year. Dennis Ludwig, the school record- holder, broke his leg before the District and couldn’t compete in State Competition. Ronnie Ales was also injured in the conference meet and never regained his running form, thereby elimi- nating the Comet relay and sprint squad. During their four years in high school, the Seniors were on track teams that established six individual school records and three relay records. Senior track members are Ronnie Ales, Jim Barker, Dennis Ludwig, Jon Pinkham, Greg Sturm, and Tom Kearfott.
