Varsity Football Squad 1st ROW: Coach Wadsworth, Mike Hynes, K. Schumacher, L. Breach, T. Wilkey, T. Stauter, W. Furrow, T. Haas, R. Heibenthal, Matt Hynes, D. Hocker, T. Hair, S. Young, B. North, R. Hill, Coach Beck. 2d ROW: S. Armstrong, L. Armstrong, M. Kays, J. McWilliams, Keith Mool, Ken Mool, D. Hodel, R. Campbell, J. Jones, M. Cleary, D. Myers, L. Wadsworth, J. Koos, G. Bauer, R. Turner, R. Armstrong, Robert Snyder, B. Walden, Richard Snyder, B. Ridgeway, T. Tipler, G. Raymer, J. Etcheson, Mgr. The 1972 FOOTBALL COMETS finished their campaign very successfully after quite a disappointing start. We opened the season with losses to Eureka and Dee-Mack and then won six of our last seven games. Our only loss the rest of the season was to Lexington, who finished the conference undefeated. We started the season with ten seniors on the squad, but they were plagued with injuries. STEVE ARMSTRONG and RICK CAMPBELL, both starters last year, were sidelined before the season got under way. KEN SCHUMACHER, a starting defensive end, was put out of commission before the third game. All-conference tackle JON JONES and linebacker TOM WILKEY led the team in tackles, each getting 70. TOM was injured in the Minonk game, which put him out the rest of the season. WAYNE FURROW did an outstanding job at defensive halfback. JIM MCWILLIAMS has a fine year at monster linebacker on defense. LOREN BREACH made a lot of improvement at offensive tackle. MIKE HYNES played an outstanding linebacker and also filled in at fullback. GARY RAYMER, the final senior, played a tough comer linebacker and led the team in pass receptions from his flanker spot. We used a number of underclassmen this year, all of whom did a terrific job in making our season successful. KEN MOOL was an all-conference defensive end. KEITH MOOL was an all-conference offensive guard. TONY HAAS was an all-conference offensive halfback. TONY is the first back in a number of years to gain over 1,000 yards rushing at El Paso High. DARYL HODEL did a fine job at defensive tackle. TOM STAUTER improved tremendously at the quarterback position and also played a tough corner linebacker. LES ARMSTRONG, TONY HAIR, and TERRY TIPLER, all played key roles in the success of our defensive unit. GREG BAUER played a big role on the kickoff and punt teams. We had two sophomores who played regular on this year's varsity. MATT HYNES at offensive center and MIKE CLEARY at offensive end. We are very happy to have all of these boys back next year. This group of young athletes did a tremendous job, and the coaching staff is very proud of them. I would like to wish all of them the best of luck in the future.
