It seems there isn't enough time during one's senior year for everything that has to be done, but we, the Class of 1970, would like to take time now to recall some of the happenings of the past few years. On May 31, 1966, we, as a class of 84 students, were promoted from the 8th grade to high school. It was a great event. Following the graduation ceremony, we proceeded to the high school gym and presented the Grand March. Later we attended a dance in gym entitled Peppermint a Go-Go. It was a little crowded with 84 students, a band, teachers, and chaperones. The next fall we cautiously entered high school. For some unknown reason, the seniors didn't take an immediate liking to us. It was a common sight to see girls with lipstick smeared on their faces, and boys dripping to classes after having encountered senior boys near the water fountain. Ron Fever was class president that year. Allen Drake was vice-president, with Eileen Berlin serving as secretary and Mary Ellen Kilpatrick as treasurer. Since we needed money, we decided to have a Slave Day for our money-making project. Our services were auctioned off to the highest bidders. It was quite a profitable day. Several students brought high bids, but first prize went to Cheryl Pitzer who made $25 for the class. Cheryl, Diane Price, and Curt Heibenthal joined our class in our freshman year. The judges at the homecoming parade that year were not too impressed with our float entitled We'll Huff and Puff to Victory. In the tradition of freshmen, we placed last. Things picked up during our sophomore year. Driver's Education was very exciting. Our instructor, Mac, was a calm, brave person. He kept cool even when Marlene Berlin tried to disable a school bus by hitting it in the garage. He was quite understanding when Linda Nauman hit Mr. Claggett's car. He didn't even get angry when Kathy Volz nearly hit a tree. He seemed to enjoy the never-dull trips to the country, and he learned quite a bit about birds from Bob Miller. Class officers that year were: Don Steffen, president; Jim Higgins, vice-president; Becky Armstrong, secretary; and Gladys Moser, treasurer. During our sophomore year we lost several of our classmates who transferred to different schools. Vicki King, Karen Pollock, and Kurt Egger left El Paso for other schools. At homecoming that year, our float got second place. Our theme was We'll Record a Victory. Things were even better our junior year. Our play, Home Sweet Homicide, was our first attempt at that sort of thing. It was directed by Mrs. Margaret Hatt and included such stars as Mary Ellen Kilpatrick, Marlene Berlin, Gladys Moser, and Allen Drake. No one won an Academy Award for his performance, but Mark Duffy ended up with quite a stomach ache. He took his role seriously--eating and all. Becky Donze was student director. That year two of our classmates, Eileen and Marlene Berlin were hosts to our foreign exchange student, Carolyn Cousins, from Australia. Although Carolyn was a senior, she was very close to many of our classmates. Janet Schlipf was our class president, with Curt Heibenthal as vice-president, Diane Price, secretary, and Becky Armstrong as treasurer. The Coronation Ball was the theme for the Junior-Senior prom. We were hosts to the seniors at a banquet at the Elms. The Count Five played for the prom, and The Surviving Souls entertained at post-prom. Dave Harroun and Carolyn Cousins were King and Queen. Nancy Canull and Connie Talbert transferred to El Paso from Roanoke-Benson during our junior year, and Chuck Schlattman transferred from Minnesota. Beth Rosenbury left El Paso for Tennessee, Cheryl Pitzer moved to Normal, and Rita Ulrich went to Oklahoma City. Our homecoming float called Hustle Your Bustle, out-ranked the seniors, and we won first place. Finally the time that everyone of us had been waiting for came. We were Seniors ! We were the rulers now. As hazing freshmen comes naturally to seniors, we felt it our duty to initiate them. However, the freshmen and Mr. Kays felt differently. Jane Etcheson was elected class president, and Dennis Haas our faithful vice-president. Our secretary was Mary McWilliams, and Eddie Graber was treasurer. Linda Nauman, Tom Martin, Becky Armstrong, Dennis Haas, and Janet Schlipf were among the stars of our senior play. It was called The Bus Stops Here, and Mr. Grose directed with the assistance of student director, Carolyn Riker. Homecoming this year was a great event. For the first time since our class had been in high school, we won our homecoming game. We defeated the Flanagan Falcons. Our float, entitled, We'll Trap Their Mousey Team, won second place to the junior float, but nothing could dull our spirts. The homecoming theme was Wonderful World of Color. Presiding King and Queen were two seniors who had grown up together, Bob Hunsinger and Cheryl Heller. As seniors we were guests of the junior class at Prom. On June 1, 1970, 74 students received their high school diplomas, and left El Paso High, ready for the future. 2
