Class Prophecy HARRY HINTHORNE, self-made millionaire, was overwhelmed with a desire to see his old classmates from El Paso High, class of '66. He had parlayed part ownership in a second-hand taxicab into one of the biggest fortunes in the Universe. It had been 24 years since he had seen some of the old gang—why not charter a spaceship to the Moon and take them all along for a long, leisurely reunion? The invitations were sent--blast off would be at 8:00 P.M., June 3, 1980—24 years to the minute since graduation. When VICKI ARMSTRONG received her invitation, she was tom between wanting to go and wanting to stay at home. Not only did she have to find a baby sitter (and with 12 kids, that was no small task) but she also had to think of her 4-H club. This year they might get a chance to enter the competition in the Interplanatary 4-H Fair to be held in Mars. Still, reunions happen only once in many years, so she would do her best to find a substitute. KAY INGERSKI welcomed the invitation. It would not only be great to see everyone again, but it would be a pleasant respite from her grueling duties with the United Nations Security Commission, attempting to solve the problems between Mercury and Venus. BRYAN JEFFREYS received his invitation as he returned from a vestry meeting. He had become a world-famous minister, renowned for his zealous manner of speaking. He would be glad to see his classmates and perhaps save a few souls. DENNIS FAULK would be unable to leave his post as Conductor of the Philharmoic Symphony. He would be there in spirit and in record, for in honor of the occasion he recorded a new symphony composed by CAROLYN HARPER, entitled Comets to the Moon. Carolyn had won world fame with her composition You Can Tell Her Anything Under the Sun When You Get Her Under the Moon . This composition would be rendered (and we do mean rendered) by the Championship Barbershop Quartet, LES KAUFMAN, ALAN CLINE, JOHN BALLARD, and MIKE KRIEG. Their fame rested more on their volume than their quality. As the day of departure grew near, there was a great flurry of activity at the launching pad at Cape Kennedy. EVELYN ARMSTRONG arrived early as she was commissioned to tune the grand piano in the main lounge, as well as the two spinets in the recreation lounges. Her perfect pitch and skill made her one of the most sought-after technicians, and it was only because she was to be one of the passengers that they were able to secure her services. DICK McWILLIAMS was also an early arrival, as he was the Commanding Pilot for the flight. His co-pilot would be FRED HUNT. Together these two fearless men had made some of the most sensational trips of the century. Perhaps Dick would make one of his thrilling walks in space. The passengers began to arrive on June 2, 1980. Among the first arrivals was DENNIS McMIL-LAN. For a time, it appeared that he would be unable to make the trip as he insisted on taking a heavy trunk with him which was much overweight. The trunk contained a month's supply of pennies for CAROL MOOL'S Bank. It was Dennis' job to polish them to a fine sheen, and unless he could finish this task he would have to remain behind. Carol finally relented and agreed to allow Dennis to do his penny-polishing when they returned. LAURA PATTERSON arrived in a happy frame of mind. Being a fraternity housemother was something of a trial, but she had been recalling some of the things her former classmates had done, and they put the antics of her boys to shame. She began to realize that boys will be boys, although she couldn't quite figure out WHY. JOEY BREACH boarded the ship, serene in the thought that he had found a reliable substitute for his position as Lifeguard of the Charmin Display. It hadn't been easy to secure a responsible person for this important job. 21

MARY BRADLE, CHERYL BRUNSON, KAREN HUNSINCER, and MARJORIE PINKHAM arrived together. These four women were stars in their fields. Mary was currently starring in the latest James Bond movie, her long blonde hair and throaty voice lending a credibility to her role that would have been impossible with any other leading lady. Cheryl was the head promotor for the Miss Universe contest. Her wide experience as a beauty queen made her a natural choice for this post. Karen was the first female toreador to be invited to appear in the bull ring on the planet Saturn. Her prowess as a bullfighter was already a legend throughout the Galaxy. Marj was the Ethel Merman of the current decade. Her stage performances were always bouncy, rousing, and exciting. EUGENE HOSTETLER felt that he could make the trip with a clear conscience. His Diaper Service was left in the capable hands of his younger brother, and since his best customer Vicki Armstrong, was going to be on the trip, too, he felt he would have no problems waiting for his return. TOM HARVEY, DOUG QUIRAM, and CHIP SCHULER flew in from Japan where they were coaching the U. S. Olympic Stars. Tom had been a skiing champ for many years, and was continuing his participation in the Olympics as skiing coach. Doug and Chip were the gymnastic champions for four years running. Their expert coaching had brought the U. S. team to championship form. MERIAM SUMMY boarded the spacecraft and immediately sought the privacy of her stateroom. She had just undergone a most trying experience--in the middle of her most-requested aria, her voice had changed from lyric soprano to bass. Now instead of opera she was doomed to singing Old Man River and Many Brave Hearts Are Asleep in the Deep . Blast-off was smooth and uneventful. Everyone was pleased to learn that AVIS SCHULTZ, MARY ANN SCOTT, and RUTH ARMSTRONG were the stewardesses for the trip. Their competence was only excelled by their ability as singers and guitarists. Their nightly songfests were enjoyed by all. At Space Station the crew and passengers spent an enjoyable day visiting with several old classmates. GARY HARP'S official capacity was Chief Interpreter of Interplanatary Messages. Sometimes, though, it seemed he was chief interrupter. It was EDITH LARSEN'S task, as Gary's assistant, to keep him from getting too far off with his messages. Her wide knowledge of languages, plus the surprising discovery that the Danes had been the first to explore the Moon, made Edith a natural for her job. ROGER EVANS was the crouble shooter for Space Station 1. He used his agile mind to solve the many problems that came up, but if all else failed he could always rely on his muscle power to provide the answer. DAVID CARRITHERS was Space Station Chaplain. He conducted a special service for his old classmates and everyone marveled at his fiery oratory. BOB REBBEC was the Chief Mechanical Engineer. Such was his reputation, that when he and his crew pronounced the ship ready for the second leg of the journey, no one had the least doubt that it would be made and without any delay. Farewells were quickly said and it was off to Space Station 2. Several more members of the Class of '66 were to join the group here. KATHY MARTIN had been to Mars where she was checking on the operation of one of the Laundromats in her vast chain. ANN KEARNEY would be continuing her tour of the planets in her capacity of Women's Military Fashion Coordinator. It was her job to make sure that each of the uniforms worn by the members of the various wmen's military organizations would harmonize. MIKE SCHEER hitched a ride to this space station. He was known as Mr. Credit Card of 1980 because he seldom, if ever, used cash. He even put his donations to the United Fund on his 22
