Crippl- ed with many injuries, the Comets were able to win only two games, squeezing by with one of the wins over Lexington, 7-6, before a homecoming crowd. Our other victory came at the expense of Gridley, 19-6, an old rival of the Comets. Co-Captain and End Chuck Williams won the most valuable player award and also made the Midstate Conference team along with Center Roger LaRochelle. Those get- ting honorable mention for the Midstate Conference team were: Halfback Don Sutton, Guard Joe Haas, and Co-Captain and Quarterback Dave Cleary. Dave Cleary was injured in the Flanagan game and was out for the rest of the season. Basketball This season the Comets posted the best record El Paso has had in a number of years, winning 20 and losing 8. The Comets did especially well in the new gymnasium where they won 9 and lost just 1. Although the team was expected to get off to a slow start, they won 5 and lost just 2 before the Christmas vacation. The Comets won the Consola- tion Bracket of the Toluca Holiday Tournament, finished third in the Midstate Conference, and won third place in the Woodford County Tournament. Chuck Williams and Ray Valen- tine were the team's leading scorers, scoring 394 and 392 points respectively. The Comets had a height advantage over many teams with Valentine and Ivan Gunn both 6'4 , and Williams at 6'I . Bill Childres, Roger La Rochelle, and Dave Cleary were the other regulars. El Paso beat Lexington in their first game of the Regional before losing to a tough Normal club by two points. Student Council To start the year out with a bang the Student Council held a back-to-school dance on the first day of school. On October 10 came the Homecoming Dance and Snake Dance. The Twirp Dance was in March this year. The Student Council sponsored a talent show, the movie ' Man with a Million and several other assembly programs. National Honor Society The Elpahi Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools of the El Paso High School has enjoyed its third year of existence since its revival. The El Paso Future Homemakers of America, Chapter 17, under the supervision of Miss White, have had a very successful year. The early activities included installation of officers, a skating party with the F.F.A., posting the U.N. Day bulletin board, build- ing a Homecoming float, the presence of a foreign speaker, babysitting for P.T.A., in- itiation and the Christmas party. The Second semester began with a safety hazard hunt, which was followed by entertaining another F.H.A. Chapter, holding the Valentine Dance, hearing a speaker on foreign foods, making favors for trays for the old folks of a rest home; and the year of '58-â59 ended with the annual Family Night. The El Paso Chapter of F,F.A. is one of the busiest and most productive groups in our school. The year's activities were started by going to Moline to tour the John Deere plant. The boys gave time and effort to help CROP, a charitable organization. Later in the year, they took part in fat stock and dairy judging on both sectional and state levels. They also entered the Public Speaking Contest. The F .F.A. this year sponsored and sent two dele- gates to the state convention. After the end of the school year a summer trip was taken.
