CLASS PROPHESY (Tune: The Man on the Flying Trapeze) 1. Oh, last week a circus came to our fair town With monkeys and elephants, popcorn and clowns, And when the tents were all pegged to the ground, The circus was ready to go. Oh, I went down to see it the other afternoon, And the Big Top looked so great and fine. And who should the stars of this circus be, But the class of Nineteen-forty-nine. Chorus: Oh, these classmates are playing the country around. They’re tumblers and acrobats, trainers and clowns. They bring joy to people when they come to town. And they all come from EH Paso High. 2. I heard the callioppe’s oom-pah-pah soon. And found it was Betty Hicks playing a tune. She switched from comedienne early last June Jokes she’d learned up at Hocker’s ran out. The barker was shouting and praising the show, Rosie Boston was doing the job. She always was quiet when she was in school. Now she stands there and yells at the mob. 3. I went to the side show to take in the sights And found Orville Wilson in Leopard-skin tights, For he is the strong man who show's off his might By lifting five-hundred pound weights. Edith Stortz, Ev’lyn Conrad and Mary Belle Cox Do a danee which I think is a hula. In the summer they say this is not bad at all. But in winter it’s quite a bit cooler. 4. Some large, colored posters attracted me then, They told of a freak show inside of a tent. Pat King drew the pictures and soon after went And eloped with the rubber-skinned man. Jack Stitt, a magician, is doing some tricks Going to saw a young lady in two. Bev. Bailey, the lady, said, “If the saw slips. And he cuts me in half, I will sue!” 5. I walked on along until I saw a line Which stopped just in front of a “Get Paid Here” sign. Performers and workers were paid for their time By the girl they like best, Marilyn George. I went in the Big Top before the big show. And I saw, as I rested my feet, Mary Gauger, May Sutton, and Bee Woosley were Scraping gum off the bottoms of seats. 6. And then from the monkey's cage someone did ask, “Will you folks move on, please, that trick was our last.” Jack Gibbons had grown a long tail for his task, Teaching monkeys to swing through the trees. They are fed with the peanuts from Ray Duncan’s farm Where he grows sev’ral carloads each day. Velda Quiram invented a shelter to help, And their business if now here to stay. 7. I bought me a ticket to see the big show. Inside, with the band, I saw John Kirkton blow And then Allan Seggerman in a long coat Stepped out as the ringmaster great. The parade started then with a blowing of horns. It was lead by an elephant grand. On its back Mar’lyn Robinson in costume bright Drew admiring praise from the stand. 8. Then two bareback riders in bright purple tights Rode around the big ring and they made a nice sight. Cleo Steffen and Georgia Crawford stole the lights With their spectacular riding act. Mildred Peachey is streamlined and shot from a gun. Since her nose is now long she goes fast. It was stretched when Duane Sherman poured stuff on it That he made in “Pard’s” Chemistry Class. 9. Then out comes Gene Hall in a large tattered coat; He’s riding around on a large spotted goat. He’s clinging quite hard to the animal’s throat. For it’s strong both in muscle and smell. Then next Doris Kemp with her trained seal called “Rinky” Does her act, but the seal looks a mess. Veternarian, Don Rinkenberger, then states That the seal has been starving to death. 10. The lights went up bright for the big feature there, Frances Kingdon and Rex Pinkham float through the air. There’s no net below but they don’t seem to care. For they haven’t yet slipped from their swings With a blaring of trumpets and bright spotlights’ beams, Reta Kingdon then climbs even higher. Next she gets on a bicycle way up in space, And rides it across a tight wire.
