F 3 S Exchange Student from the Philippines This year Eisenhower's chapter of the American Field Service brought Eleanor Vinson of the Philippines to Yakima. Expenses for her trip and one for an exchange student from Eisenhower, Karen Westberg, were raised through workdays and club contributions. Karen, a senior, spent the summer of i964 in Brazil as an AFS student living with a Brazilian family and attending school. Eleanor's home is Kidapawan, Botabato, the Philippines, a city located on the second largest island, Mindanao and comes from a family of six children, an only girl with five brothers. Philippine curriculum, Eleanor said in commenting about the Philippine schools, is not very different from the U.S. in subiect matter because it is patterned after the American educational system. The iunior high school is eliminated, and we have six years in grade school and four years in high school. Subiects include sciences, arts, and physical education which are taught in English, but Tagalog, our national language, and Spanish are also taught. Eleanor was one of 59 students from the Philippines to receive the honor of being an exchange student. She was interviewed twice by Philip- pine educators before her application papers were mailed for confirmation to the general headquarters in New York. She said, I was extremely happy when I found out l was granted the scholarship last April l'64l although my American family, school, and community were not known to me until our AFS initiation at Stanford University in July. Eleanor's American family proved to be the Jules Shockleys, whose daughter was a senior at Eisenhower. Eleanor took classes in English, psychology, chemistry, social studies, speech and drama, the activities she selected were Medical Careers Club, Modern Language Club, Pep Club, INR. She was an observing member of cabinet and senate, and participated in lke Hilarities. After graduation from Eisenhower, Eleanor took a three week tour of the U.S. with other AFS students and returned home in July with hopes of college and a future career in medicine. 7 in M. F , . lke's second foreign ex change student was Eleanor Vinson of the Philippines. Eleanor brought a touch of the Philippines to Eisen- hower, frequently wearing her native costume.
