Mr. Davis is in charge ofthe guidance department and has a definite concern for the person- al growth and maturity of students. Guidance is a vari- ety of services which have the common objective of helping students become increasingly self-directed so that they may make the maximum use of their talents and opportunities. Students need assistance not only in solving emotional and personal problems, but also in making satisfactory adjustments in educational, vocational, health, social, and civic areas. CCD Mr. John W. Reps. Mr. Reps enjoys his work as a counselor at Eisenhower. CDD Mrs. Whited completes recommenda- tion forms required for student approvals for jobs, etc. CED Mr. Thorpe pauses a moment while looking through a student's record. Science CAD Mrs. Julia Heiden. Mrs. Helden, head of the science department, teaches physical science, physics, and chemistry. Through a modern laboratory oriented curriculum, the Science Department strives to create a learn- ing environment in which students can ac- tually practice science and become profi- cient in the art of intelligent decision making. Our present course offerings are physical science, biology, earth and air sciences. chemistry, physics, zoology, and physiology. CBD Mr. James LeMasters. Mr. LeMasters teaches biology, earth science, and air sci- ence. He also coaches cross country and the sophomore basketball team. CCD Mr. Le- Masters pauses a moment during his work schedule. Mr. Gallas teaches Ger- man, elements of communication, and intro- duction to the novel. CBD Miss Virginia Ogles. Miss Ogles teaches Spanish and elements of communication classes. CCD Miss Ogles explains how to form the endings of verbs in Spanish. CDD Mr. Gallas demonstrates the correct German pronunciation for the students. CED Mrs. Martin pauses from her daily schedule. Mrs. Martin, head of the foreign language department, performs many duties. Her duties include teaching Latin, an- cient literature, freshman English, and the short story. Learning a foreign language has intrinsic values for all interested students, whether or not they need the language for later academic activ- ities. Important benefits include an awareness of what a language actually is Can organized sys- tem of meaningful sounds and the visual sym- bols used to represent the soundsD, a sympathet- ic understanding ofthe people who use the lan- guage and the culture they have developed, practice of a mental discipline not offered in other courses, and mastery of a valuable tool for further learning.
