WE WOULD REMEMBER JOY RUTH DARLING GRADUATE OF EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL 1960 JAMESTOWN COMMUNITY COLLEGE 1962 KENT (OHIO) STATE UNIVERSITY 1964 UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA, PEACE CORPS TRAINING PROGRAM, SEPTEMBER 5, 1964 When Joy applied to the Peace Corps in January, 1964, she wrote, I want to do something for my country, and I feel I will be able to express this desire in serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I must also confess that I will think much more of myself as a citizen and as a human being after having given of myself in such a capacity.” Joy was killed January 3, 1965 in a motorcycle accident in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Sargent Shriver, Director of the Peace Corps, said, Joy was one of our most promising Volunteers. During her period of training and overseas service, her outstanding abilities and unusual dedication won for her the love and respect of both Volunteers and staff. The example she set by her devotion to duty will long be remembered. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy R. Darling, received many messages of condolence from persons high in authority, in both the United States and Bolivia. The Minister of Agriculture for Bolivia wrote, Joy Ruth Darling will light the way for other Peace Corps Volunteers who through unselfish and hard labor have made possible the uniting of two fellow countries in a common fight against backwardness, ignorance and underdevelopment.” Dr. Carl R. Gray, Peace Corps physician in Bolivia, wrote, We are all griefstricken that her death was so untimely but by way of consolation, since we all must face death sometime, we should be proud that HER life was given for her country in pursuit of the greatest world-wide cause-- PEACE. THE WHITE HOUSE Washington January 7, 1965 Dear Mr. and Mr . Darling: 1 cannot adequately express my sorrow about your daughter'a death. Sargent Shriver telle me that in the abort time Joy aerved in Bolivia, ahe proved herself to be an outstanding Volunteer. She was admired and respected by all with whom ahe worked. Joy exemplified the higheat ideals of the Peace Corps and the very best traditions of our country. We will always be indebted to her. Mr. and Mrs. Guy R.
